$2.5 million Head Start grant secured for Nevada
With cuts made to the program because of the sequester, Head Start in Nevada will receive a $2.5 million boost after the Department of Health and Human Services announced Thursday it will receive a grant.
The $2,559,327 grant is designed to expand projects in Nevada and will be funded through the University of Nevada Reno, said Sen. Harry Reid.
Head Start provides comprehensive early childhood education, health, nutrition, and parent involvement services to low-income children and their families. The program's services and resources are designed to foster stable family relationships, enhance children's physical and emotional well-being, and establish an environment to develop strong cognitive skills.
The transition from preschool to elementary school imposes diverse developmental challenges that include requiring the children to engage successfully with their peers outside of the family network, adjust to the space of a classroom, and meet the expectations the school setting provides.
“I am delighted that, thanks to this generous grant, Nevada will have new resources for important Head Start programs across the state,” said Reid. “Head Start is a proven successful program that lays the foundation for children to be successful later in school and life. Providing Nevada’s children with increased access to Head Start programs is an important investment for the future of our state.”
Reid has been a strong supporter of Head Start and Early Head Start through his time in Congress. He lead the passage of the Recovery Act, allowing Nevada to expand the number of children served by Head Start programs. Despite new investments in the nation’s early education programs, currently the Silver State has more than 10,000 3-year-old and 4 year old children eligible for Head Start programs. Across the board spending cuts, known as the sequester. has forced deep cuts into areas of the program.
