Carson City firefighters respond to structure fire on Wilma Way
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 10/11/2013 - 12:13pmCarson City firefighters were called at around noon to a working structure fire at a home located at 2555 Wilma Way. Firefighters at the scene report smoke coming from inside the garage area. Two dog were reportedly rescued in the fire.
According to dispatch reports via police scanner, firefighters had made entry into the home as of around 12:10 p.m. to see if anyone is inside and found the two dogs. Carson City Animal Services was called to respond.
NV Energy: Power restored to 159 Carson City customers
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 10/02/2013 - 9:50amA power outage affected 159 customers in the areas of Sonoma, Jackson, Grant and Silver Sage early Wednesday morning in Carson City, according to NV Energy. Power was restored at around 8 a.m.
There were outages associated with it at around midnight. Carson City firefighters responded to the outage in which firefighters on the scene reported smoke coming from an underground vault area near Baker and Sonoma streets. NV Energy spokeswoman Faye Andersen said the outage was underground line related.
NV Energy: Power restored in South Carson City to all but around 40 customers
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 09/23/2013 - 9:46pmUPDATE 11:09PM: NV Energy reports that power has been restored to nearly all 2,249 customers affected in Monday night's power outage in south Carson City.
Service has been restored to nearly all customers but there's still around 40 customers without power around the Stafford Way and Hickory areas, said NV Energy spokesman Karl Walquist. Those 40 customers should be back on line by sometime between 11:30 p.m. and midnight, he said.
While a definitive cause has not been determined, Walquist said there was a fire in an underground vault which tripped a line out of the Curry Street station which is what caused the majority of the outage. NV Energy utility crews were able to isolate the areas and restore most of the service.

Apartment uninhabitable after fire burns at least two units
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 09/20/2013 - 4:32pmUPDATE: 7:44PM: Two neighbors living adjacent to the apartment complex that was damaged in an apartment fire Friday night suffered minor injuries. Michael Robson, 26, said he was working on his car when he saw flames and jumped through a fence to help his neighbors as the house was burning.
Robson's brother-in-law, Cody Claussen, 18, also helped and suffered an electrical burn and a glass burn on his hands and arms, Robson said. Both men drove themselves to the emergency room for treatment.
Brush fire quickly doused near post office in Dayton
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 09/20/2013 - 4:16pmCentral Lyon County Fire District personnel responded to a brush fire that put out a lot of smoke and had at one time threatened the post office off of Highway 50 in Dayton before it was quickly extinguished.
The fire was reported at around 2:15 p.m. County Manager Jeff Page said the fire burned at least a quarter of an acre and firefighters were investigating the cause of it. As of 4 p.m. fire crews had nearly finished mopping up the area.

Breezy conditions prompt Red Flag Warning for Carson City area

While the wind is helping push some of the Rim Fire smoke out of Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County, it has also created critical fire weather conditions because of the low humidity created, according to the weather service.

Air quality shows signs of improvement as firefighters make progress on Rim Fire

Cooler temperatures and higher humidity helped firefighters gain on the fire which has now consumed 235,841 acres in the Stanislaus National Forest and Yosemite National Park.

Dense smoke advisories continue for much of the Carson City region and into the Sierra. Heavier smoke could return Sunday and Monday, however, due to a more southerly flow of air, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Using data provided by the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection, Carson City and Douglas County officials continue to monitor the rapid decline in air quality. On Wednesday Douglas County sent a news release stating that overnight pollution levels moved into the "hazardous" classification.

Carson City firefighters assist with Rim Fire, more than 20 major events this year

On Saturday Carson City Fire Department Capt. Matt Donnelly was assigned as a strike team leader with other area engines to the fire, which has chewed nearly 180,000 acres in the Stanislaus National Forest in Tuolumne County. Thick smoke from the Rim Fire continues to push through Carson City, Carson Valley, Lyon County and much of Northern Nevada.
Carson City area air quality to fluctuate between 'very unhealthy' and 'unhealthy'
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 08/26/2013 - 1:26pmAir quality in Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County will likely straddle between "unhealthy" and "very unhealthy" conditions through at least the week, the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection reports.
Smoke and ash from the Rim Fire near Yosemite National Park is being pushed in the atmosphere directly over the region causing extremely elevated amounts of particulate matter. The levels of particulate matter equate to “Very Unhealthy” on the Air Quality Index (AQI) level of health concern, according to a news release.
Rescue teams called for injured climber in Clear Creek Canyon
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 08/23/2013 - 6:49pmCarson City fire department, sheriff's office and search and rescue responded Friday night to an injured 23-year-old Lake Tahoe climber in Clear Creek Canyon. The climber was stuck hanging from rocks in the canyon and may have compound fractures, said Sheriff Ken Furlong.
Care Flight was ordered to respond to the scene however the smoke was too thick for a helicopter to land. The climber was taken to Renown Medical Center in Reno.

The fire burning in California's Tuolumne County near Yosemite National Park has filled Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County skies with thick, unhealthy smoke.
The Rim Fire has grown to 165 miles in size and is 2 percent contained. California Gov. Jerry Brown has issued a state of emergency.

Lyon County Office of Emergency Management urges citizens with respiratory illness to stay indoors. Citizens should use caution when physically exerting themselves in this smokey environment. A fire burning in Tuolumne County, Calif., near Yosemite National Park, is the main source of smoke in the Carson City, Carson Valley, Reno and Lyon County regions. The Rim Fire is estimated at nearly 54,000 acres and growing Thursday with 2 percent containment.
Smoke in Minden: Douglas County anticipates levels to become 'unsafe' by evening
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 08/22/2013 - 3:46pmNevada-Douglas County Emergency Management and The Bureau of Pollution Control are closely monitoring air quality concerns from smoke conditions drifting into the valley from the Rim Fire in Tuolumne County, according to a Douglas County news release.
The Rim Fire was estimated at nearly 54,000 acres as of 7 a.m. Thursday morning, up from 16,000 acres on Wednesday. The most recent air samples from this afternoon put the current air quality in the upper end of the "moderate" level in the Carson Valley, the news release states.
