Carson City fire crews snuff fence fire

A fence that was burning in the 1700 block of Brown Street and reportedly touching off some vegetation was snuffed at around noon, according to Carson City fire crews reporting from the scene.
The fire was called in to dispatch at around 11:45 this morning. First arrivers at the scene reported heavy smoke with a fence on fire. As it began to spread, additional fire trucks were called in. Fire crews on the scene had asked for additional backup to assist as winds picked up.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Structure fire at College Parkway and Otha Street

Carson City fire crews and deputies have responded to a structure fire at the intersection of College Parkway and Otha Street. The fire, reportedly a trailer, is emitting heavy smoke with some flames showing. The call came into dispatch at around 2:20 this afternoon.
Carson City sheriff's deputies have been asked to to block traffic in the area.

Brush fire chews 123 acres at Carson City rifle range

Fire crews have knocked down a 123-acre blaze that started late Saturday morning near the Carson City Rifle and Pistol Range off Flint Drive near the landfill.
Called the Rifle Fire, flames and smoke that billowed through the eastern edge of Carson City were extinguished after several agencies, helicopters and air tankers attacked the fire head-on through the afternoon and into the evening reports the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center.
An air tanker was taken off the fire and some equipment was moved out of the area after 5 p.m., said Helen Frazier of the dispatch center.

Brush fire knocked down at Brunswick Canyon in Carson City

Carson City firefighters were able to get a good jump on a brush fire burning early this afternoon near the Bertagnolli quarry in the Brunswick Canyon area. Reports coming in via police scanner is that the fire is under control and mop up has begun.
As of about 1:15 this afternoon much of the fire was said to have been knocked down, no structures were burned and cleanup had begun. Flames were reportedly six feet high with the fire generating lots of smoke. The fire, reported at 12:35, was said to be about 100 x 100 feet wide, according to police scanner traffic.

Carson City firefighters respond to brush fire near Grandview and Damon

Carson City fire and emergency crews have responded tonight to a brush fire reported near a water tower area between Damon Road and Grandview Drive. Flames and smoke are apparently visible, according to initial reports.

Firefighters are entering the hilly area from both directions, according to police scanner traffic reports. The fire call came in at about 7:47 this evening. As of about 8:20 firefighters are reporting that they are beginning to get a handle on the flames. Breezy conditions continue tonight, which apparently fanned some of the flames early on.

Prescribed Fire Ops Possible Near Pioneer Trail and U.S. 50 Next Week

U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews may conduct prescribed fire operations on the south side of the intersection of Pioneer Trail and U.S. Highway 50 in the community of Meyers near South Lake Tahoe early next week if weather conditions permit, according to a news release.

The project is about 30 acres and consists of piles of vegetation and woody materials remaining after fuels reduction efforts aimed at reducing wildfire risk to the community.

This is a reminder that the Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF) will be conducting prescribed burns at Tunnel Creek in the Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park backcountry throughout late April and into May.

The Tunnel Creek road, from State Route 28 to Tunnel Creek Station, may be closed in order to conduct the burns.
Signs will be posted throughout the area when burns are being conducted.

Nearly 100 acres will be treated in 15 separate phases.

Training exercises put smoke into house fire

A donated old home across from the Carson Nugget became an ideal training and staging area for Carson City firefighters today.
The Carson Nugget provided fire personnel an opportunity they seldom get, which is to train inside a home that is already set to be destroyed. In the Nugget's case it was a old gray outbuilding located at the southeast corner of the casino’s property.
Over the next few days firefighters will be given the opportunity to work though training exercises that involve both smoke and fire, including stints like this afternoon's that involve life-saving measures.

Forest Service prescribed fire in Markleeville

As part of the Carson Ranger District Hazardous Fuels Reduction Project, U.S. Forest Service fire crews will begin prescribed fire burning operations near Pleasant Valley Road, Hot Springs Road, and Grover’s Hot Spring State Park in the Markleeville area, located in Alpine County Calif., beginning around April 21, through May 21, weather and fuel conditions permitting.

Smoking Bill Would Establish Smoking Zones On College Campuses

CARSON CITY — A bill that would partially ban smoking on college campuses passed out of the Assembly Judiciary Committee today.
Assemblyman Paul Aizley, D-Las Vegas, amended Assembly Bill 128 to require colleges and universities to establish campus smoking zones outside of which a person would not be able to smoke.
Under the amendment, the smoking zones would have to be a reasonable distance away from walking paths and doorways.

A Carson City mother is in jail and faces felony child abuse and false imprisonment charges after she allegedly locked her child in a room and told authorities to come pick him up because she couldn't take care of the boy anymore.

Woman jailed for heroin possession and DUI after slamming car into Carson City deputy

A Carson City woman who injured a sheriff's deputy in an accident Thursday night faces a felony charge of possessing heroin and a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence of drugs.

Cecilia Rose Norma Ristau, 19, was arrested at the Highway 395 bypass at Lakeview Hill after slamming her Saturn Ion into Carson City Sheriff's Deputy Dan Ochenschlager as he was putting flares on the road. Her bail has been set at $4,871. In a recorded interview, the woman admitted to having used heroin earlier Thursday night.
