Carson City Symphony presents 30th Pops Party Concert at Governor's Mansion

The beautiful back lawn of the Governor's Mansion is the site of the Carson City Symphony's 30th annual Pops Party concert on Sunday, June 8, at 3 p.m. This concert is an official Nevada 150 event.

The program features the Carson City Symphony, Carson City Symphony Chorus, STRAZZ Youth Strings, and guest singers Sherre Carne and Cindee LeVal. Grounds open and pre-concert entertainment by the Yale-Worth strolling strings duo begins at 2 p.m. Admission is free.

Nevada 150 events planned locally, statewide throughout May

Many events are scheduled throughout the Silver State in the month of May. These Nevada 150 events help celebrate all things Nevada and bring awareness to the state’s 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following are events held between May 2 and May 15.

Mile High Jazz Band presents April 8 Jazz anniversary concert at Comma Coffee

For 13 years, Mile High Jazz Band has been playing at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street, on the second Tuesday of every month. Come celebrate this milestone with us on April 8.

Hear sensational big-band music with vocalist Sheryl Adams and guest vocalists Cindee LeVal and June Joplin, and enjoy anniversary cake at intermission. General admission is $5 at the door, and it's free for age 18 and under.

Mile High Jazz Band presents 'Jazz Sampler for Sweethearts' Feb. 11 in Carson City

Treat your Valentine to a Jazz Sampler for Sweethearts, an evening of sweet and hot big-band music with singers Sheryl Adams, June Joplin, and Cindee LaVal at Comma Coffee on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Outdoors with Don Q: Escaping Carson City in the wintertime

For several years, Elaine and I have fled Carson City for a short time in the month of January or February to escape the cold, snow and ice of our area in the wintertime. This year was no exception, except, sadly, there is no snow.

We had been invited to be guests at the home of my cousin Lorraine and her husband Bob Scholes of Dayton, who spend the winter months in Indio, Calif.
If you, too, would like to temporarily escape winter in Carson City for the next couple of months, here is what we did:

Carson City Symphony Chorus to begin rehearsals for upcoming concerts

Carson City Symphony Chorus, conducted by Michael Langham, is beginning rehearsals on Tuesday, January 28, for two concerts with the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus.

Rehearsals are on Tuesdays, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., at First Baptist Church, 1750 N. Mountain Street in Carson City. Singers who are interested in joining should contact Director Michael Langham at sfml@aol.com or the Symphony at 775-883-4154.

Youth Theatre Carson City presents 'Shrek: The Musical' running Jan. 10-12 at Community Center

"Yes, Virginia the Musical" an exciting new holiday classic based on the Macy’s and NBC Holiday special of the same name and produced by Youth Theatre Carson City runs this weekend.

The show offers three performances, Saturday, Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. in the Bob Boldrick Theatre at the Carson City Community Center. "Yes, Virginia the Musical" is a brand-new musical that has been adapted specifically for children and families by Macy’s, in partnership with the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

January auditions announced for Wild Horse Children's Theater's production of 'Mulan, Jr.'

Wild Horse Children’s Theater is looking for actors, singers and dancers, ages 5-16 to audition for Disney’s “Mulan, Jr.” Auditions will be held Thursday, January 9 from 4-7 pm and Saturday, January 11 from 1-4 pm at the Performance Hall of the Brewery Arts Center , 511 W. Consort Canzona's 'A 17th Century Christmas' program this Sunday

Carson City Symphony Chorus to begin rehearsals

The Carson City Symphony Chorus, an extension of the select Carson Chamber Singers, will begin rehearsals on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 7 to 9 p.m., at First Baptist Church, 1750 N. Mountain Street in Carson City.

The Chorus, directed by Michael Langham, is open to all singers, high-school age through adults. They will perform in the Holiday Treat concert with the Symphony on Sunday, Dec. 15, at the Carson City Community Center.

Carson Chamber Singers featured in Nov. 1 Reno concert, Nov. 2 in Carson City

The Carson Chamber Singers, a choral group of the Carson City Symphony Association, begins its 29th season with a pair of a cappella concerts directed by Michael Langham in Reno and Carson City.

The first concert, Friday, Nov. 1, at 7:30 p.m., will be at Trinity Episcopal Church, 200 Island Ave., Reno. The program will be repeated on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 7:30 p.m., at the Brewery Arts Center Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King Street, Carson City.

Nevada Day pow wow organizers seek community sponsors for 30th event

Organizers of the 30th annual La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow to be held in Carson City during the Nevada Day weekend say the event is taking shape and are looking for sponsors and raffle donations to help bring the event to its fullest.

The pow wow began 30 years ago at the Carson Indian Colony. It is and has always been a part of the Nevada Day celebrations, said co-organizer Brandi Colunga.

However, through the years, some of those who participated in organizing it have stepped down. So, along with Martin Montgomery, the two are hoping to continue the tradition.

Youth Theatre Carson City is celebrating its final weekend performance of "Once On This Island, Jr.," an exciting adaptation of the classic fairy tale, "The Little Mermaid," but with a Caribbean flair.

The show, directed by Andie Anderson, will run a final time this weekend, August 16-17 at 7 p.m. and Aug. 18 at 2 p.m. in the Bob Boldrick Theatre at the Carson City Community Center.

'Walking lecture' on July 18 features history of Carson City trees

The Carson City Historical Society presents a free "walking lecture" on the "History of Trees in Carson City" on Thurday, July 18.

The presentation begins at the Carson City Library Auditorium, 900 N. Roop St., at 6:00 p.m. with a 20-30 minute slide show presentation about trees of our area by Kyle Horvath. Then, participants will drive over to the Capitol Ground for the rest of the lecture.

Carson City Chamber Singers in Concert

The Carson Chamber Singers, a choral group of the Carson City Symphony Association, begins its 28th season with a concerts in Carson City on November 2 and in Reno on November 4. Director Michael Langham will conduct the Singers in works by René Clausen, Randall Thompson, Maurice Duruflé, and Louis Vierne. The Solemn Mass by Vierne, for chorus and organ, will be accompanied by Nancy Mielke. The Carson City concert will be Friday, Nov. 2, 7:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 306 W. Musser St. Admission is free, requested donation $10 at the door.
