Carson City Soroptimist will present grant awards to two women, and honor the achievements of local high school seniors, on Wednesday, May 22, noon to 1 p.m. at Glen Eagles. The meeting is open to the public, with prior reservations required.

As we head into the middle of the month many of us haven't turned on the air conditioner because the weather outside has been comfortably, pleasantly air conditioned these past few weeks. An unusual and persistent weather pattern will send cold Pacific storms into the Carson City region Wednesday through early next week, a pattern that is more typical of early March rather than late May.

For Carson City and throughout western Nevada we can expect periods of rain and strong gusty winds and for the Sierra, heavy wet snow starting at around 8,000 feet and dropping to 6,000 feet, according to the National Weather Service.

The Nevada Highway Patrol was contacted regarding a police impersonation phone call scam. An individual in the Reno area had received a phone call from a number that matched the NHP Reno Office.

The talented and friendly Andrew Sullivan is coming to the Brewery Arts Center’s Performance Hall on May 25 at 7 p.m. to play a live show for Carson City. Come hear him play his great songs like “Where You Are,” and “Chickens in the Yard” and see why his fans are joining “The Chicken Club.”

One of the great things about our high desert climate is is how quickly conditions can change. Coming to Carson City on Friday, May 17, the Brewery Arts Center Celtic Series features The Sophie & Fiachra Trio who will perform in the Maizie Harris Jesse Theatre.

The Sophie & Fiachra Trio are a group of “musiciens sans frontieres' who refuse to let the Atlantic sunder their love of their own and one another’s Irish and Québecois musical traditions.”

Comprising of Irish uilleann piper Fiachra O’Regan, Québec fiddler/singer Sophie Lavoie, and guitarist André Marchand, the trio take traditional Irish and Québécois traditional music, blended with Lavoie’s “lithe and masterful” compositions. Hello fellow anglers, what great time of year. The rivers have opened in California. Which, depending on the new regulation that is being decided on, may not close on November 15th.

As well as Alpine county, the lakes in Inyo and Mono Counties have opened and have been producing some beautiful fish, which I will share later in this report. It's hard to believe how fast the time goes.

The weekend is at our doorstep as we head into Friday, May 10, 2019. Even though forecasters say we may have showers this weekend, the cool spring rain won't dampen the fun. We have a bevy of activities lined up Friday including the opening of the Transcontinental Railroad exhibit at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, day 1 of the two-day Mother's Day Plant Sale hosted by The Greenhouse Project, RSVP's Spring Celebration and Carnival at Mills Park, a day hike, art showings, live music and more.

The Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company presents Gershwin's Tony-winning Broadway hit, “Crazy for You” at the Carson City Community Center beginning Friday and running weekends through May 19.

Heading into Thursday, May 9, 2019 we're looking at a few showers and partly sunny skies around Carson City. The event lineup features the RSVP Spring Celebration and Carnival kickoff and family night at Mills Park, a Healthy Communities event in Silver Springs, CASA volunteer information hour workshop, an afternoon hike along the Ash Canyon trail, art demonstrations, live music and more. Residents nominated Carson City for a generous $5,000 grant offered through the Domino’s Paving for Pizza campaign. Paving for Pizza is a creative nationwide initiative to award nominated cities funds to fill potholes. Carson City Public Works proudly accepts this award and is honored to be chosen based on the thoughtful nominations submitted by Carson City’s residents. The courteous gesture of nominating Carson City is praiseworthy.

We have activities throughout the region today, including a history presentation in Dayton, a Holocaust memorial service at the Governor's Mansion, art classes, live jazz and more. We want to send a big birthday "shoutout" to our outdoor editor emeritus Don Quilici, who turns 85 today. Don and his wife, Elaine, remain active, maintain healthy walks and hikes around the region and have plans for yet another Alaska outback trip this summer. Happy Birthday Q!

Taylor Clarke sported the sedona red today with the Arizona Diamondbacks for his first big-league start.

Recalled from Reno this morning, Clarke was tagged with the loss in a 6-3 contest in Tampa Bay. The right-hander pitched a solid six innings, giving up two earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.

Every child needs a hero, but abused children need superheroes! Court Appointed Special Advocates, also known as CASA, will hold information hours on Thursday, May 9 and again Thursday, May 16 in Carson City.

April was an action packed month as several Carson High School clubs put on The Friendship Ball, A Night Under the Big Top Father Daughter Ball, and The Greatest Show on Earth 2019 Prom. Even more amazing than the dances are the students behind the scenes who, with the guidance of Leadership Adviser Ann Britt and FBLA Adviser Angila Golik, transformed the CHS Big Gym so that all visitors, young and old alike, would think they had walked into a beautiful dream.
