Tuesday, April 12: Things to do in Carson City

Help them celebrate. Grab your dancing shoes and head to Carson Lanes and learn some country line dancing. Kids won’t want to miss Craft Day at the Carson City Library: all supplies are free and waiting. It’s an evening of illusion at the Brewery Arts Center. Be dazzled and help raise funds for the Carson Middle School Band Program.

Add a dose of beautiful to your day with a visit to an art Gallery. You’ll find a new exhibit in the Main Gallery at Western Nevada College. Carson City officials will be on hand today at the Community Center to answer questions and explain what is on the budget for the upcoming fiscal year. While you’re there, take a good gander at the Great Basin Native Artists show on display in the Sierra Room.

Not so this year. SeniorAdvisor.com just released their Best of 2016 Awards and Carson Plaza in Carson City was one of the few to make the list.

Have a leisurely lunch at Comma Coffee while listening to Dennis on the Piano. Toast the day with a mimosa at Ed’s Doghouse. Raise your glass to for a good cause: Suds for Seniors is raising money for the Meals on Wheels Program. A $15 ticket will get you a sample of five beers at the Feisty Goat Pub or at the Firkin and Fox. Might as well stick around the Firkin for karaoke and some yummy grub.

Better yet, take me out for some frozen yogurt at Yogurt Beach where you’ll find a fundraiser and walk-in sign-ups for Carson City Little League. Relay for Life is holding a fundraiser, as well. Head to Buffalo Wild Wings and let them know you’re there for Relay. Round out the Valentine’s Day weekend by singing some love songs: karaoke at Firkin and Fox is always a good time.

Apparently it’s considered unlucky, but only if you were born in the year of the Monkey yourself. This is a year when anything can happen. Spend the day enjoying something beautiful. The Nevada Artist Association Gallery at the Brewery Art Center will be changing its exhibit at the end of the week, so go take a last peek at what’s on display.

While you’re wandering around campus, make sure to check out the new exhibit in the Bristlecone building’s Main Gallery. Relax after your first day of classes with a tasting sampler at the Feisty Goat Pub. ‘Suds for Seniors’ is a fundraiser for Meals on Wheels and lets you try five of the draft beers on tap. Enjoy the Monday Night Music Series at Sierra Place Senior Living on West College Parkway. Sandi ‘Pipes’ Medley will be singing some jazz favorites.

The weekly walk, sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department, heads to the new MAC center in case of wet weather. Learn more about this crazy weather at Sierra Place Senior Living with a presentation by weather historian Mark McLaughlin. Don't miss the Mile High Jazz Band at Comma Coffee tonight. History lovers will want to head up to Virginia City for a lecture at St. Mary's of the Mountain Catholic Church.

Submitted by Danielle Cook on Fri, 11/20/2015 - 8:35pmThe countdown to Turkey Day has begun, and living in Carson City gives us plenty to be thankful for: Beautiful views, our own deer herd, great shops, yummy restaurants, talented actors, artists, and craftsmen, and wonderful people. Get in the spirit of giving with a new tattoo from Hooligan’s Ink to benefit the Austin House. For something less permanent, drop off a turkey at one of the contenders in the Salvation Army’s Battle of the Bars. Giving your time is valuable, too. The Muscle Powered Trash Mob meets once a month to help keep Carson’s trails clean and litter-free.

Thank you for your service. Several places around town are offering something special for our Veterans today: free coffee, free breakfast, free lunch, etc. You’ll need to bring proof of service. Tonight, everyone is invited to the party. Check out the Junebugs at Living the Good Life. The Portland pop-folk band returns for a night of fun and dancing.
Monday, Nov. 9: Things to do in Carson City

A winter wonderland isn’t always easy to drive in, so please slow down and be careful. Monday always brings karaoke at the Firkin and Fox, so go sing your heart out. Football lovers will probably be watching the Bears-Chargers game. For those of you with swing in your step, head to El Charro Avita for intermediate dance lessons and the High Sierra Swing Dance Club’s weekly ‘night out.’

Festival of Trees Fundraiser Set by Senior Service Network

The Senior Service Network, a non-profit organization that helps seniors in need with emergency expenses, is doing its inaugural “Festival of Trees” on Saturday, Nov. 21 at Carson Plaza – an independent senior living community at 2120 East Long Street in Carson City.

Column: Safe driving ideas for older adults

There are more distractions now than there used to be. Of course the roads are more congested and there are a few dangerously aggressive drivers out there.

Carson City Symphony's 'Strings in the Summer' concert July 31

Prestige and Carson Tahoe Health to provide senior care services to Carson City region
Submitted by editor on Tue, 02/18/2014 - 5:31pmPrestige Care and Prestige Senior Living, leaders in skilled nursing and rehabilitation care, announced plans Tuesday to join with Carson Tahoe Health to expand senior care services and offer comprehensive memory care to Carson City residents and their families.
As a first step in the relationship, the organizations will develop a community with 40 units for memory care services on the Carson Tahoe Specialty Medical Center campus. Construction will begin in 2014.
Carson City firefighters evacuate senior apartments; heavy smoke after fire extinguished
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 10/25/2012 - 12:30pmUPDATE 1:10PM: Sierra Ridge residents who were evacuated earlier this afternoon are beginning to return to their apartments after a fire and heavy smoke forced an evacuation. Carson City firefighters called for an evacuation at the Russell Way senior housing complex after smoke and a fire came from the third floor. The fire was quickly extinguished but smoke occupied much of the complex making it a safety hazard. The senior citizen residents began returning to their apartments at around 1 p.m.
