Reno Open Studios is an opportunity to visit the artist’s studios and see them at work. You will learn what inspires them, witness their techniques, and be stimulated by their passion for the creative process. One of the most historic events affecting the American Business Women's Association (ABWA) was the proclamation of Sept. 22 as American Business Women’s Day.

Soroptimist International of Carson City will host a special evening event to present information about club activities, as well as about projects to which it contributes nationally and globally. This gathering is not just for members, although members enjoy warm friendships and most will be there to enjoy themselves, but is also open to the public. The Carson High School senior class of 2019 arose early, not an easy task for a high school student, to celebrate the rising of the sun on this their final year of high school. A tradition that began decades ago at CHS has seniors jumping out of bed still wearing their pajamas, grabbing their blankets, and heading off to the CHS football field to arrive by 6 a.m.

Dr. Melissa Jones of Carson City Orthodontics has given over 30 scholarships for free orthodontia work to deserving youth in Carson City since 2012. All she asks in return? For the recipient to perform community service hours as a “smile ambassador.”

Jobs for America’s Graduates, also known as JAG, is a program across the country that teaches life skills to high school students, so that they can be prepared for the work force after graduation. However, Carson City’s own Pioneer High School’s JAG instructor, Chyanne Corley, has taken that idea farther. She teaches her students not only to be prepared for the work force, but to become confident, well rounded adults.

Carson High School in Carson City will be "A Place to Shine" this Saturday at the third annual Show and Shine Car Show, which raises money for scholarships aimed at providing students and their families the funds they need to participate in extracurricular activities.

Carson City Soroptimist will feature Norma Ruelas from the Family Support Council of Douglas County at its Program Meeting, Wednesday, August 22, from noon to 1 p.m. at Glen Eagles. The meeting is open to the public, with prior reservation required.

Reach for the Stars Gala attendees enjoyed an unforgettable Saturday night under the stars at Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College in Carson City. The third annual gala raised money for student scholarships, academic programs and the observatory.

The Nevada Capital Branch of American Association of University Women will be kicking off its 2018-19 program year on August 24, 2018 at 4PM. Members and guests will be celebrating 75 years of advocating for equity for women and girls in Carson City and surrounding communities.

The Community Foundation of Douglas County has been established as an affiliate fund to the Community Foundation of Western Nevada. Its purpose is to build an unrestricted charitable endowment for the benefit of Douglas County communities. A fund advisory committee of local residents will recommend the annual grants from the invested earning of the endowment.

Travelling more than 11,400 miles roundtrip isn’t too far for Western Nevada College to elevate its advanced manufacturing program with the latest strategies and training tools through partnerships with international industrial technology giants.

Tesla announced an initial $1.5 million in funding grants at Thursday's Nevada Board of Education meeting. The grant is the first funds towards its agreement to contribute $37.5 million over five years to K-12 education in Nevada.

CARSON CITY — Two new ProtoTrak CNC milling machines donated by Trak Machine Tools will expand machining experiences for students enrolled in Western Nevada College’s Machine Tool Technology program.

Carson City has a car show and Brewfest hitting the downtown corridor, and to the south, Minden and Gardnerville are having their party of the year: Carson Valley Days. It’s World Doll Day at the Nevada State Museum with special displays, activities, and a special performance by the local Young Chautauquans.

Mile High Jazz Band Association, in cooperation with Carson Middle School, presents a five-day Jazz Camp with sessions for middle- and high-school musicians, weekdays June 13-19, in the band room at Carson Middle School, 1140 W. King St., in Carson City.

CARSON CITY — The American Association of University Women, AAUW Capital Nevada Branch, was pleased to honor 3 high school seniors with a $1,000 scholarship each at its June 2 branch luncheon.

The CHS Class of 2018 is going to step onto the football field as a group of students without a diploma and step off the football field as high school graduates with a diploma and a new wilderness in front of them.

This first weekend of June packs quite a punch: activities and events abound. Head downtown for the first Third and Curry Farmers Market of the season, then wander a few blocks north for Due Sorella’s Spring Vintage Market. You may as well just keep the car parked. With the monthly Wine Walk, Pour for Paws in McFadden Plaza, and Crystal’s Crusade Street Party Fundraiser on W. Telegraph, downtown is the place to be. There are so many options this weekend, so take a gander and enjoy your weekend.

SATURDAY:  

A new scholarship through the Western Nevada College Foundation honors the memory of Michael Albert Dugan. The Mike Dugan Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to a Fallon, Churchill County or rural student to be used toward materials for online or Fallon campus classes.

Carson City Toyota has generously funded $5,000 in scholarships for students attending Western Nevada College this fall. This donation is dedicated to helping students who are pursuing careers in automotive mechanics as well as students pursuing their associate degrees in other academic areas.

Two Eagle Valley Middle School students and two Pioneer High School students and their families experienced a tragic fire May 16 in Carson City.

Antonio and Alexis Trujillo’s family, and Jordan and Theodore Leyva’s family are now displaced following this incident.
