Heavenly, Kirkwood award Vail Resorts EpicPromise grants to 49 Lake Tahoe area community groups

The grant program is part of Vail Resorts EpicPromise, the company’s umbrella brand for its environmental efforts and community giving. EpicPromise highlights Vail Resorts’ strong commitment amongst guests, employees, and community members and engages them to be stewards of the natural environment and local causes. The local recipients were recognized at a Grants Reception event on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at Heavenly’s California Main Lodge.
Western Nevada College Right-Hander Signs with Sacramento State
Submitted by editor on Fri, 11/14/2014 - 12:59pmFor a student athlete who has routinely associated with winners during his amateur baseball career, it’s no surprise that Western Nevada College pitcher Max Karnos has decided to make Sacramento State his next destination after the 2015 season with WNC.
Karnos, a 6-foot-4 right-hander from Anchorage, Alaska, signed a letter of intent with the Hornets this week.
“I just felt like it was the right school,” Karnos said. “I really like the coaches, I like the team, and they have a good winning tradition.”
$12.5 million in federal money OK'd for Incline Village to Highway 50 improvements
Submitted by editor on Thu, 11/13/2014 - 2:20pmWashoe County Commissioners approved Wednesday a Federal Lands Access Program Memorandum of Agreement providing $12.5 million in federal funding for the design and construction of improvements along the state Route 28 corridor from Incline Village to the U.S. Highway 50 junction.
Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report through Nov. 16

The Nevada Department of Transportation will be completing road work on Highway 50 from Arrowhead Drive in Carson City to Baldwine Lane in Mound House. Work will be limited to shoulder work.
Empire Cemetery-Carson City, Nevada

In the photo background Carson City is visible. Empire, Nevada was a milling town, where large steam driven stamping mills used Carson River water to help break down Virginia City ore so the silver and gold could be removed.
Mercury was used in the silver and gold removal process, and the removal of mercury used is still an issue today. In this photo local school teacher Jean Shawna is looking over some of the pioneer headstones.
2015 Amgen Tour of California to host first two pro women's cycling stages at South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by editor on Mon, 10/20/2014 - 3:57pmTo observe the 10th anniversary edition of the Amgen Tour of California, organizers of the race announced Monday that the first two stages of the expanded women’s portion of the race would be hosted by Tahoe South, “America’s Best Lake,” (USA Today, Aug. 2012) May 8-9, 2015. The competition will continue in Sacramento, May 10, 2015, with a third racing stage, the same day as the overall men’s start of the Amgen Tour of California.

Fifth Street from Roop Street to Saliman Road from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from Monday through Thursday. Elaine Street will remain closed to through traffic from Monday through Sunday. Please follow marked detour.
WNC Baseball: Young Wildcats to wrap up scrimmage season with ‘Intra-squad World Series’

The Wildcats are holding their annual Intrasquad Player World Series Wednesday through Saturday at John L. Harvey Field on WNC’s Carson City campus. Game times are 1 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 12:30 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday. The public is invited to attend at no charge.
Annual Light After Dark Walk/Run raises awareness and funds for Advocates

Starting at 11 a.m. on Race Day, participants can pick-up their packets at Riverview Park. Warm-ups will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the RACE starting at 6 p.m. The race course will be the Full Loop once around for the 5K and twice around for the 10K. There will be music and refreshments after the race. They encourage participants to dress up. Each participant will given a glow stick to wear during the event.
TRPA announces Best in the Basin environmental planning project awards

Award winners in the agency’s 24th annual Best in the Basin include remodel, new construction, Best Management Practices, stream restoration and erosion control projects that stand out as examples of the best environmental planning, design and implementation.

Attract tourist dollars to Nevada by using Highway 95
Submitted by editor on Thu, 09/11/2014 - 3:14pmAs an incentive for Telsa and other companies to build in the Reno – Tahoe Industrial Center on USA Parkway and benefit Nevada, Interstate 11 should be built from Yerrington to tie into the Reno – Tahoe Industrial Center and to I-80. This should be presented to Telsa now.
Interstate 11 should be built parallel to US Highway 95 from Las Vegas to Tonapah on a straight line from Tonaph to Yerrington. Also I- 580 should be extended from Carson City to Yerrington which would give a direct route to Carson City and Reno.
Forest Service opts to restore wetlands, remove Incline Lake Dam

How to get there:
It's easy, just take U.S. 395 south from Carson City, through Minden, Gardnerville, Topaz, Coleville, Walker and Bridgeport to the very top of Conway Summit. At the summit, take the paved road on the right for six miles to the end of the pavement at Little Virginia Lake.

To nine year old Erline Christopherson, all she thought when first saw the crystal blue waters was how she'd like to swim across it. The dream was born that day in 1955.

This section will be open to local traffic only, and through traffic will be detoured onto Prospect Drive.
There will be utility work primarily in the street shoulder on weekdays at the following locations. Minimal delays are possible.
— Gulch Road between Wagon Wheel Road and Combs Canyon Road.
— Lakeview Road west of Combs Canyon Road.
— Sandy Circle.

Ash Canyon to Kings Canyon Trail - Boulder Gateway Construction
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Fri, 07/04/2014 - 7:33pmCelebrating the 4th of July doing trail work, Carson City Ward 3 Supervisor John McKenna and Muscle Powered Senior Crew Leader Oliver Lieder started constructing a rock wall at the Boulder Gateway on the Ash Canyon to Kings Canyon Trail. Completion of this very scenic trail is expected in the late October.
WNC Baseball Team Continues Academic Success

Western Nevada College in Carson City once again made the National Junior College Athletic Association’s list of All-Academic Teams for the 2013-14 school year.
Wildcats coach D.J. Whittemore said that players learn before they arrive at WNC that their academic success is more important than what they accomplish on the diamond.
WNC Softball tops SWAC academic honors; Ashbaugh, Gonzalez earn individual awards

WNC led three Scenic West Athletic Conference softball teams, making the grade for the 2013-14 National Junior College Athletic Association’s All-Academic Teams announced on Tuesday.

Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report through June 22

Vista Grande Boulevard will continue to be closed from Topsy Lane to Old Clear Creek Road with a signed detour. There will also be intermittent delays on Old Clear Creek Road near the intersection with Vista Grande Boulevard.
There will be a lane shift on Northridge Drive and the sidewalk will be closed on the north side of the street near the intersection with Roop Street from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.

Steam train rides from Carson City to the 1860s boom-era mining town of Virginia City will begin May 24 and extend weekends through Oct. 19. Friday diesel train tours will begin June 20.

Bicycle commuting and other urban errands, though, will most likely take us through areas that are out of our normal comfort zone.

Salt Lake earned home-field advantage and the right to be the home team as the number one seed in the conference. Christian Stolo started on the mound for the Wildcats of Carson City.
