What Works: Dealing with Seeing Your Shadow

This morning, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, which means we are in for six more weeks of winter. While, in Carson City this means hope for a few more powder days in a very powder-light season, the east coast is less than happy by the news. Ultimately, it’s about one thing — perspective.

UNR professor joins scientists to reveal global patterns of specialized feeding in insects

Insects are picky eaters, and not the voracious eat-everything-in-sight bingers that devour all the plants in your garden. After decades of field work from dozens of sites around the world, and after two years of combing through and analyzing data, Matt Forister, associate professor and ecologist from the University of Nevada, Reno, and an international team have reported on global patterns in the diets of insect herbivores.

What Works: The only thing that is certain is change

TimeHop is a great little app I use when I need a little reminder about how far I have come. This app takes you back as many as five years in your social media posts. For me, it illustrates one simple point of life. The only thing that is certain is change.

Deputies, GATE students partner for a day at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office

School children from Carson and Eagle Valley middle schools involved with the Gifted and Academically Talented Education program took a walk on the side of the law Wednesday to get a glimpse of three areas of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office: The Gang Unit, K9 and Special Enforcement Team, and the Mounted Posse.

It was the second year the sheriff’s office has worked with GATE students. Last year, the program focused on the K9 Unit, but this year, Lt. Brian Humphrey said he wanted to incorporate two more layers of the sheriff’s office for the kids to learn.

This accomplishment was achieved even though a substantial rainfall prevented our August National Night Out in Mills Park. That cancelation was the first in 12 years.

Chase International agent to appear on HGTV’s House Hunters

A new South Lake Tahoe couple brought along a little something special on their recent home search — a camera crew, an HGTV House Hunters crew, to be exact.

Travis and Morgan Fields were working with Chase International’s Angie Clark last spring when the Oakland couple decided to contact the popular show. Angie, already a huge fan, was immediately on board. The trio completed questionnaires and sent in audition tapes.

Column: Year end planning for those about to get married

First of all, don’t let financial matters be more important than your personal relationships. But if you are planning to get married, it might save some taxes for you to consider some of the following items.

In 2014, two unmarried individuals can each have $89,350 of taxable income (after the standard deduction or Itemized Deductions and personal exemption) before they are taxed at 28 percent. But, if they are married, their combined taxable income over $148,850 wills be taxed at a rate starting at 28 percent for taxable income above that.

What Works: When to quit and when to hold

Yikes Diane! Did you say the Q word? Are you actually suggesting, Ms. Mindset, that quitting IS an option? Yes, dear reader, that’s exactly what I’m saying. Just as we have reasons for adapting, improvising, overcoming, and pressing on, there are times we need to recognize, rearrange, and restart when something doesn’t serve us. In other words, quitting isn’t the end. It’s the beginning.

What Works: Love Yourself First

Love her or hate her, Rupaul has some wise words when it comes to loving yourself. “If you don’t love yourself, how the hell are you going to love someone else?” The wisest example I have found on loving myself came from a set of airplane instructions. “Put your own oxygen mask on first before you attempt to help someone with theirs.”

What Works: Expectations are pre-meditated resentments

I think I just felt a hundred hearts skip a beat. “Diane, you are off your rocker. Aren’t you a business coach? Don’t you measure success based on EXPECTED outcomes?” Yes. The word OUTCOMES (plural) means there is more than one scenario to the situation and any one of them could come about. By not having expectations or at least not being emotionally tied to ONE outcome, I open myself up to the plural form. I try not to emotionally tie myself to “this is how it’s going to turn out.” Why? It’s limiting.

What Works: Boundaries — Good Fences Make Good Relationships

I visited a friend’s house this weekend and noticed a dog roaming freely in their unfenced yard. At first I was taken aback and then I noticed something. They were utilizing an electric fence. Put aside your feelings about electric fences for a moment and hang with me for a bit. This concept can teach us a lot about personal and professional boundaries.

$3.8 million project will help northern Nevada build resiliency to future droughts

Managing water in northern Nevada’s Truckee-Carson River System requires local communities to balance urban, agricultural and ecosystem needs. Changes in historical climate trends are increasingly expected to make this balancing act more challenging. A competitive grant totaling $3.8 million has been awarded to the University of Nevada, Reno and the Desert Research Institute in partnership with the U.S.

How To Win Every Argument, Every Time

Several days ago, my dad and I had a conversation. Our conversation started like most other people start theirs. He expressed his thoughts and concerns and I parried back with mine. At the end of the day we were both frustrated with the whole conversation. It was a stalemate. He didn’t understand me and I didn’t understand him. Which seems very familiar with some of the conversations I’ve had with my wife.

How can two people in the same room, speaking the same language, not understand each other? How many conversations like that, have you had?

What Works: Are you being kind to yourself?

This weekend provided a lesson in self-kindness I will never forget. It started with a group hike at Upper Thomas Creek Trail.

Hiking with a group, I thought, would make the experience more enjoyable. Unfortunately, initially, it didn't. It wasn't because of the group. It was because of what went on in my head as a result. In an effort to try to keep up with more experienced hikers, I focused outside myself and pushed myself too hard to keep up.

A Classical Conservative Speaks!

At one time, I use to be proud to call myself a conservative and a Republican. I considered myself to be a “classical conservative”, one who believes in limited government, free markets, individual liberty, a strong national defense, and firmly believed that the role of government should be to provide people the freedom necessary to pursue their own goals, and the placement of the individual in our society above that of the collective wisdom of the government.

The brilliance of classical conservatism is, and still remains, in its simplicity.
