Carson City homeless benefit with Tom Petty, Rod Stewart tribute bands, WNC fundraising dinner, wine walk, 'Frozen 2' screening at Carson Mall highlight weekend events

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. The monthly Downtown Carson City Wine Walk takes place Saturday followed by a performance from Tom Petty and Rod Stewart tribute bands during The Do Drop In’s “A Face in the Crowd” homeless fundraiser at Fuji Park. St. Teresa School will host its 17th annual Crab Feed Fundraiser. Combined with comedy at the Carson Nugget and Brewery Arts Center, the Carson City region is in store for a busy weekend. Here's a rundown of activities over the next three days:

Friday, March 6
Employers, entrepreneurs invited for portraits on Employee Appreciation Day (all day). The cost is $75 for a 10-minute session including a chosen, lightly edited photo to be emailed. A Nevada Momentum Fueled by RAD marketing agency photographer will be taking the photos in a closed shoot at Carson City Library. This year is National Employee Appreciation Day, and anyone looking to have headshot portraits done — or employers looking to give something extra to employees — can submit a request to have photos taken Friday.

Muscle Powered Friday Morning Walk at Conestoga Trail. 9 a.m. Meet at the Powerline Road, 1/4 miles from Imus Road on Conestoga Drive. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City. Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building.

Greenhouse Project's Foothill Garden Education Series. 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Foothill Garden located behind the Carson-Tahoe Cancer Resource Center, 1535 Medical Pkwy. In this installment, Will Pierz will be discussing the mutually beneficial relationships we can cultivate in our gardens as well as the potential abundance in your "pre-summer" garden. Beat the summer heat and start early with appropriate crops!

Experience Virtual Reality at the Carson City Library. 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop St. Join us every Friday from 2:30 pm to 5:30 p.m. to experience Virtual Reality! Using the latest technology, Virtual Reality allows you to experience new places and situations in a computer simulated world. Discover what it’s like to see dinosaurs up close, view art from around the world in a single museum, or blast alien ships in a virtual world. Must have a waiver signed.

Keith Alan Barnett at Bella Vita Bistro. 4 p.m. at 1304 S. Stewart St. in Carson City. Come on down and have a lovely dinner and drinks while listening to Keith's performances of your favorites and soon to be favorites.

WNC's National Student Nurses Association hosts spaghetti dinner this Friday. 5 to 8 p.m. at Western Nevada College, 2201 W. College Pkwy in Carson City. The Western Nevada College chapter of the National Student Nurses Association proudly presents our annual Spaghetti Feed, this Friday March 6th, 2020 from 5-8 pm. Price of admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Please come hungry!

Open Mic Night at A to Zen Gift Shop. 6 to 9 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson St. Open Mic Night is held at A to Zen Gift Shop on the Zen Den Stage. All talents, creative projects are welcome. Come practice being on stage. There will be music, comedy, poetry, magic, and more. All ages and skill levels are welcome.

Introductory Fly-Tying Academy with the Carson Fly Fishing Academy. 6:30 p.m. at the Ormsby Room inside the Carson City Sheriff's Office, 911 E. Musser St. The purpose of the class is to learn basic techniques of tying different flies, no experience necessary. The flies for this class will be Wooly Bugger, Pheasant Tail Nymph, Elk Hair Caddis, and Humpy.

Piper's Opera House in Virginia City to celebrate 135 years. 7 p.m. at 12 B Street. Celebrate 135 years at Piper’s Opera House in Virginia City, Nev. on Friday, March 6. Piper’s Opera House bravely opened for the third time in 1885 after burning to the ground twice before. Never has there been a gathering space in Virginia City for events such as melodramatic theater, political rallies, boxing matches, roller skating, and elegant balls.

A Night of Improv Comedy at The Brewery Arts Center. 7 p.m. at 449 W. King St. in Carson City. Be a part of the creative process. Join this incredible crew of Improv actors as they make up the entire evening's entertainment on the spot. Always a fun and unexpected night.

The Grumpy Old Men Dance Band at the Carson City Senior Center. 7 p.m. at 911 Beverly Dr. Starting in January, the first Friday night of every month will feature a dance band, The Grumpy Old Men, at the Carson City Senior Center. Doors open at 6:30pm.

Comedian Chris Cope at the Carson Comedy Club this Friday. 8 p.m. at the Carson Nugget, 507 N. Carson St. The Carson Comedy Club at the Carson Nugget presents the hilarious comedic stylings of Chris Cope this Friday, March 6 in Carson City. Chris is a nationally touring stand up comedian and writer.

Saturday, March 7
Snowshoe Thompson Ski & Snowshoe event celebrates 20 years. 9 a.m. at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course in South Lake Tahoe. Snow or no snow, event activities begin with a guided tour starting at 9:30 am with Norwegian native and longboard ski expert Nina MacLeod, who will also give a longboard ski demonstration if sufficient snow is present. Attendees should bring their own snowshoes and cross country skis.

Sporting Clays Fun Shoot. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Capitol City Gun Club, 3590 Arrowhead Dr. Along with plenty of fun, lunch and prizes will be included throughout the day! The cost for the event is $45 per adult and $20 for youth.

Lyon County Republican Central Committee meets Saturday in Dayton. 10 a.m. at the Lyon County Utilities Building, 34 Lakes Blvd. This is a great opportunity to meet Republicans and local and state officials. Updates on the precinct meetings held earlier in February and information on the upcoming Lyon County Convention and Nevada state convention will be discussed.

Guided snowshoe hikes with a ranger on the Carson Ranger District. 10 a.m. at Tahoe Meadows, one mile southwest of the summit of Nevada State Route 431 Mt. Rose Highway. The Carson Ranger District on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is pleased to announce the return of the popular Forest Ranger-led snowshoe walks. The walks begin this Saturday, Jan. 25, and will be offered every Saturday through March 28.

Sierra Chef in Genoa presents 'Ramblings & Fish Mongering' Saturday featuring Charlie Abowd. 1 to 3 p.m. at 2292 Main St. Suites 3 and 4. Come and spend Saturday afternoon spinning stories about fish, buying fish, and cooking fish. The event features legendary Chef Charlie Abowd and will be this Saturday. Reservations are required. $95 per person.

Carson City's Monthly Wine Walk. 1 to 5 p.m. in downtown Carson City. The Downtown Wine Walk is a must not miss! For just $15 you’ll receive a commemorative wine glass and endless reasons to stroll through Downtown sipping and tasting the afternoon away. Bring your wine walk glass with the Carson City Logo on it and pay only $12. St. Teresa School's 17th Annual Crab Feed Fundraiser. 5 to 10 p.m. at the Multi-Purpose Athletic Center Facility, 1860 Russell Way. St. Teresa of Avila Catholic School will hold its 17th Annual Crab Feed Fundraiser on Saturday, March 7, 2020, beginning at 5 p.m. at the MAC, 1860 Russell Way, Carson City. Catering provided by Liberty Events and Catering. There will be dinner, dancing, raffle prizes, silent and live auctions. Tickets available now - $75 per person.

Tom Petty, Rod Stewart tribute shows to headline homeless fundraiser at Carson City's Fuji Park. 5:30 p.m. at the Fuji Park Exhibit Hall, 601 Old Clear Creek Rd. The Fuji Park Exhibition Hall in Carson City will be rockin' all evening long on Saturday, March 7 as the legendary Michael Furlong Band presents a Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers tribute show entitled "A Face in the Crowd." Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the band will keep the area's Petty fans on the dance floor until the show wraps up at 10 p.m.

A to Zen's 70s Dance Party. 7 to 9 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson St. Old Skool Dance party, featuring special guest vinyl DJ Duo Honay Wax! Boogie the night away in your best 70s garb, listening to the best 70s tunes.

You will find something of interest or my name’s not Mark Twain, or used to be anyways. And this year Virginia City is joining in on the fun along with Carson City. Wow!

Nevada Division of Forestry state nursery is open for business beginning Thursday, May 9. When we first bought our home in 1988 with its 2.5 acres, there were some poplars, pines, blue spruce, willows, and grass, but little else. I soon discovered the state nursery and filled the yard with flowering shrubs and other plants. I added lilacs, sand cherries, golden and Nevada currants, sumacs, Apache plumes, and incense cedars.

The Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested a Dayton man Saturday for possession of child pornography. During the investigation, officers also learned the man was a local little league coach.

Mrs. Carson City America, Kassandra Tapia, is set to grace the stage of the Mrs. Nevada America Pageant, scheduled to take place on June 9, 2024, in Las Vegas. She is proudly representing the Capital City, and she aims to not only showcase her poise and grace but also advocate for her powerful platform, Cycle Breakers.

Nevada Author, Sandie La Nae will be selling her Carson City and Virginia City books the three days of the Mark Twain Days, May 10, 11, and 12.

As part of Smokey Bear’s 80th birthday celebration, the Smokey Reading Challenge is underway. Launched this morning at the Nevada State Library, Archives and Public Records in Carson City, the program is designed to engage children across Nevada in an exciting reading journey to learn about wildfire prevention, forests, and careers in natural resources with Smokey Bear.

The Nevada Jeep Club held their first Washoe Valley Cleanup on Saturday, May 4 and collected more than 450 pounds of trash along Highway 395.

Partnership Carson City has launched “Rediscovering Your Mental Health Series,” a five-week program aimed at promoting mental wellness during Mental Health Awareness Month this May. Each week, participants will have the opportunity to learn new skills and techniques to enhance their mental well-being and foster a healthy community.

The Carson City Leisure Hour Club members continue celebrating the organization’s 127th year with a presentation on the upcoming Jazz and Beyond festival.

At the club’s dinner meeting on Thursday, May 16, Cherie Shipley, a member of the event planning committee, will talk about the annual Jazz and Beyond festival, how it formed, and the impact it has had on the community. Jazz and Beyond is scheduled for August 16 to August 25, 2024.

Organized by Carol Park, the Elks held an open to the public, two-day indoor garage sale at the lodge in March as a fundraiser for Holiday with a Hero. Lodge members donated all items sold and assisted at the event which received excellent support from the community.

An 18-year-old Carson City man was arrested at a local diner after allegedly stealing a car from a used car lot two days prior to test drive it.

Friday May 10 at 7:30PM, Valhalla Tahoe kicks off their season with a living history presentation, “The Reno Cure,” at the Boathouse Theater. Reno has long been known as “The Biggest Little City.”

The Carson City Symphony Association will present a concert, "Pleasures of Music," on Friday, May 10, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. at Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church, 3680 N. Hwy. 395, south of Best Buy, Carson City. The concert is a Mark Twain Days event. Admission is free, donations welcome,

Members of the Rotary Club of Carson City will learn how its annual Educational Grant has helped local students at the club’s next meeting. Carson School District K-12 Curriculum & Assessment Coordinator Brittany Witter received the club’s Carson City School District’s Professional Development Center Grant last year with the goal of funding the “Literacy and Love of Reading through Social Studies” project.

Western Nevada College hosted a ceremony to celebrate students succeeding in training to reestablish themselves in the workforce on Thursday.

UPDATE 6 p.m.: Courtesy of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office: On May 3, 2024 at approximately 1430 hours, Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputies responded along with Central Lyon County, Carson City and Storey County Fire personnel to the area of 34 Newman Ln. for a report of motorhome on fire. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the fire had spread and multiple other abandoned vehicles caught fire as well. No one was hurt or injured during the incident. The incident is currently under investigation, which is being conducted by the Nevada State Fire Marshall’s Division.

UPDATE 2:38 p.m.: Firefighters from Storey are also now responding.

UPDATE 2:33 p.m.: Multiple vehicles on the property are engulfed in flame.

Around 2:15 p.m. a fire was reported at 34 Newman Lane in Mound House.

Firefighters from Carson City and Lyon County are enroute to the scene.

UPDATE 1:20 p.m.: According to Sheriff Ken Furlong, a student reported they saw a weapon. The incident was investigated and there was no weapon found. The lockdown has now been lifted and students are leaving the school.

UPDATE 1:15 p.m.: Update 05-03-24 at 1:15 p.m.
One student has reported an alleged weapon sighting. It has not been corroborated, but school officials and the sheriff’s office are investigating out an abundance of caution.

UPDATE 12:50 p.m.: The following update was provided by the district:

Carson High School was put on lockdown this afternoon around 12:15 p.m. No person was injured. There is an active situation being investigated in cooperation with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. We will provide more information as it becomes known. The school is secure. Do not go to the school. No entrances will be permitted at time. The district will provide updates every 30 minutes. Expect the next update at 1:15 p.m.

Carson High School is currently on a lockdown as of 12:40 p.m. Friday, but there has been no incident reported according to Sheriff Ken Furlong.

The Lyon County Board of County Commissioners heard a presentation from the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) on the current status of the Highway 50 Preservation Project in Dayton.

This document, which will guide the County's decisions and resource allocation for the next five years, is the result of extensive input from both internal and external stakeholders.

The unpredictability of spring this first weekend of May continues with the threat of snow showers in the Sierra on Saturday, along with gusty winds and rain down to the valley floors for Carson City and surrounding areas. The storm system should moved out by Sunday morning.

Carson High School Culinary Arts and Early Childhood Education students competed at the three-day state conference last month for Nevada Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. This was the first time the school’s programs participated in the conference. A total of 25 students competed in eight events.

Family fun, lively bands and historical characters return to Dangberg Historic Park in Minden beginning in May. Favorite presenters, bands and Chautauquans will be joined by new ones as well.

Carson City’s former Board of Supervisor and business owner Stan Jones was posthumously awarded Thursday the Historic Preservation Award for his long time work for downtown Carson City.

Each year, a Historic Preservation Award is awarded by the Historic Resources Commission to Carson City residents or organizations who have gone above and beyond in their dedication to historic preservation.

The Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is today, Thursday, May 2 at the Nevada State Capitol in Carson City. The memorial brings hundreds to the capitol grounds. The ceremony begins at 1 p.m.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office arrested three for their alleged involvement in business thefts last month on Topsy Lane south of Carson City.

The national issue of suicide — particularly among veterans — touched many people who attended the Walk for Hope on Wednesday morning at Western Nevada College in Carson City.
