A Nevada Republican U.S. Senate hopeful is withdrawing from the race a week before the primary election.
Gary Bernstein threw his support Tuesday to John Chachas, a former Wall Street banker who grew up in Ely and returned to Nevada to run for the seat held by Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid. Bernstein was a long shot in the race that drew 12 GOP candidates.

With early voting under way for the Nevada primaries, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Chad Christensen yesterday maintained that he will come out on top, despite polls showing him trailing well behind candidates Sue Lowden, Sharron Angle, and Danny Tarkanian..

Manogue's 14-4 win in six innings over Carson on Thursday eliminated the Senators from the Northern 4A playoff race. CHS fell to 4-9 in the Sierra League while the Miners improved to 10-6 in league.

The Carson High softball team took one step closer to realizing its goal of qualifying for the Northern 4A playoffs by winning the opener of a doubleheader against Manogue, 7-2, on Wednesday at CHS. The second game was called in the bottom of the fourth inning with Manogue leading 4-3 due to heavy snow flurries that began to fall.

Despite losing three of four games last weekend at College of Southern Idaho to fall two games behind College of Southern Nevada in the race for the Scenic West Athletic Conference regular season title, WNC coach D.J. Whittemore is still holding out hope his team can catch the Coyotes with eight games left.
"We're not out of it yet," Whittemore said. "Obviously we've got to take care of our business and we need a little help. We're still in the hunt for the title."

RENO – Half a dozen candidates in the crowded GOP field seeking to take on Harry Reid in the U.S. Senate race in November debated here Friday, with responses showing more agreement than discord on issues ranging from immigration reform to the need to reduce the size of the federal government.

RENO – The three Republican candidates vying to become the next governor of Nevada engaged in a spirited discussion Friday on issues ranging from taxes and public education to the future of Yucca Mountain.

The Western Nevada College baseball team sustained a crash that will be tough to recover from on this day in the Scenic West Athletic Conference race after being swept at College of Southern Idaho, losing the opener 2-1 and the nightcap 3-0.
WNC (34-11) fell to 22-8 in the SWAC and if College of Southern Nevada swept Colorado Northwestern Community College as expected on Friday, also fell out of first place in the conference, one game behind the Coyotes.

CARSON CITY – GOP Nevada U.S. Senate candidate John Chachas will stay in the race through the June primary despite a poor showing in a recent poll, saying today those results did not fully reflect a television ad campaign he initiated only recently.

CARSON CITY – Two of the four Republican candidates seeking to replace Sen. Randolph Townsend in state Senate District 4 in Washoe County attacked one another’s records in a debate televised today on the Nevada NewsMakers program.
Assemblyman Ty Cobb said one of his opponents, Ben Kieckhefer, has called for “revenue enhancements” which Cobb said is support for a tax increase. Kieckhefer denied the charge.

There's still plenty of buzz over what happened this past weekend at John L. Harvey Field when the Western Nevada College baseball team pulled off a four-game sweep of College of Southern Nevada.

With veiled threats to the governors of Nevada and several other states last month by a far-right militia group, the amount of anti-government fervor may be boiling over nationally, but all is peaceful today in Carson City as more than a thousand have gathered at the Capitol to protest President Barack Obama, Sen. Harry Reid and health care.

Oh, and taxes. But there were far more anti-Obama and Harry Reid signs and a few Hitler ones than anything remotely about the IRS, today being the filing deadline for federal income taxes.

A daunting task awaits the Western Nevada College baseball team when instate rival College of Southern Nevada comes to John L. Harvey Field this weekend.
CSN is the nation's No. 1 ranked team and has a three-game lead over the Wildcats in the race for the Scenic West Athletic Conference regular season title. The first place Coyotes are 21-3 in the SWAC while WNC (30-9) is 18-6.
 

A few thoughts about tonight's supervisor candidate forum (you can get our live blog of the event here, and the Nevada Appeal version here):

• All candidates did well. There were no obvious gaffs. A lot of times, these forums expose those not-ready-for-prime-time candidates. Not this time. All spoke well and knew the issues.

CARSON CITY – Nevada Republican U.S. Senate candidate Danny Tarkanian said in an interview today he is the independent choice for voters in the June primary and that his leading opponent, Sue Lowden, is the choice of the establishment.

CARSON CITY – Despite being described as a “wounded” senator who has not been effective in representing Nevada in Washington, DC, state Republican officials and candidates surveyed by the Nevada News Bureau for the most part are still not calling on U.S. Senator John Ensign, R-Nev., to step down.
