Downtown Carson City construction update meeting today

Q&D Construction and Carson City Public Works will join #CarsonProud for a public meeting Monday, 3 p.m. giving an update on construction of the downtown corridor project.

Interested citizens can meet with the contractor, ask questions and walk the construction site. Organizers made some changes to the schedule and they will share them at the meeting. CarsonProud will also post a video of this meeting if residents can't attend.

Firefighters were called to a small fire Sunday afternoon that's putting up light smoke in the area of the Carson City Landfill off of Flint Drive.

The Carson City Public Works Department is seeking applicants to participate in a public forum which will discuss the maintenance of streets in Carson City.

City manager outlines current emergency preparedness plan

The Nevada state capital has seen its share of natural disasters and citywide emergencies.

From wildfires to flooding and all-too-common high wind events, Carson City Manager Nick Marano says local government is ready to respond at a moment's notice.

"The city has an emergency operations plan," Marano said. "We've gone through several rounds of modifications to it."

There is an emergency operations center, he said, that enhances communication between public safety and public works departments during local emergencies.

Snow plows used to remove hail in Mound House, Dayton Valley area

Lyon County Public Works crews were busy Thursday afternoon with snow plows to remove several inches of hail that accumulated on the roads. These pictures were taken by a plow crew off of Linehan Road in Mound House. Hail accumulation was also reported at Dayton Valley Ranches east of Dayton.

Some people have reported via social media, minor damage. One resident, Laura Tennant said the hail "tore thousands of leaves off the trees."

Lyon County Manager Jeff Page noted that he's not seen anything like this kind of hail accumulation in his 30 years in the county.

Water main flushing today at Ann and North Carson Street

Carson City Public Works will be performing required water main flushing Tuesday, April 26. There is potential for temporary periods of discolored water in the area surrounding N. Carson Street and Ann Street.

Carson City 2017 budget open house sessions today

Carson City will host public information open house sessions today, Monday, April 4 on the proposed fiscal year 2017 budget in the Sierra Room at the Carson City Community Center located at 851 E. William Street, Carson City.

The first session begins at noon and runs until 1:30 p.m. and the second session is from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Carson City fiscal year 2017 budget open house set for Monday

Carson City will hold a public information open house this coming Monday, April 4, on the proposed fiscal year 2017 budget. The open house will be at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street, Carson City.

There will be two sessions: 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Each session will begin in the Sierra Room with an overview of the budget process and a summary of the proposed budget.

There's still time to get your living piece of downtown Carson City. Public Works and Q&D Construction held its first of a two-day plant salvage on Monday. Citizens interested in transplanting the plants can head to the intersection of 3rd and Curry Street after 5 p.m. today, Tuesday, March 22. Plants will be available for pick up on a first come first serve basis.

Radio towers no longer in Carson City skyline

The radio transmission towers located near the Carson City Public Works on Butti Way and Fairview Drive were demolished Friday as the city reclaims the land for unspecified future use. The pair of towers, built in 1954, stood 220 feet high and will be replaced by a single tower. The new tower will be relocated about 100 yards west of the current location to an adjacent property, a spokesperson for the radio station said.

Carson City Public Works, construction company salvage downtown plants for public

With all the work going on downtown, Carson City Public Works Department and Q and D Construction will salvage the bushes and shrubs from the Downtown Carson Street medians, currently under construction.

Carson City public works to break ground on first phase of water facility

The Carson City Public Works Department will hold a March 21 groundbreaking ceremony for the Phase 1A improvements at the Water Resource Recovery Facility. The $30 million project is for the repair and rehabilitation of major components of the sewer plant to ensure continued compliance with State and Federal permits.

Spinouts, crashes and power outages reported during morning Carson City commute

UPDATE 11:15AM: Carson City is experiencing minor, localized flooding, according to the city's Facebook page. Sandbags are available at Public Works Corporate Yard on Butti Way. Call 887-2355 if you need more information. As of 11:15 there were 14 NV Energy outages in Carson City with 253 customers without power. Douglas County has 16 outages with 165 customers without power. There is one outage in Lyon County with one customer without power.

High winds around Carson City keep utility workers busy

Strong wind gusts around Carson City kept public works, tree services, cable and NV Energy crews busy Friday afternoon.

High wind speeds around Carson City: CarsonWeather.com reports a gust of 51 mph at 1:45 p.m; Carson City Airport, 31 mph; Carson Valley DRI sensor north of Gardnerville, 61 mph; 89 mph at Washoe Valley's Nevada Department of Transportation site. On I-580 at Galena Bridge a gust was reported at 84 mph; and the highest gust thus far was 135 mph at Slide Mountain.

UPDATE 1:52 PM: Carson City Fire Department and Public Works were called to the area of North Carson Street at Arrowhead where a tree has fallen and was blocking lanes of traffic and power lines on the road. Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies were called to assist and redirect traffic. All motorists should avoid the area.

High winds have whipped through Carson City this afternoon knocking down trees, snapping limbs, and dropping fences.

The tree is the first photo fell at around 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Nevada and Seventh Street blocking both lanes of traffic. In the second photo, this tree fell on King street near Tacoma at around 12:15 p.m., bringing down a large pine and reducing traffic to one lane across from Carson Middle School.

Sen. Heller’s Lake Tahoe Restoration Act Passes Committee

The Lake Tahoe Restoration Act of 2015, a bipartisan bill sponsored by Nevada Sen. Dean Heller, passed the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works on Wednesday. The legislation, created alongside senators Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., Harry Reid, D-Nevada and Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., provides federal, state, and local partners important tools to reduce wildfire threats, improve water clarity, jumpstart innovative infrastructure projects, and combat invasive species.

Reconstruction of downtown corridor moving forward

The reconstruction of Carson Street in the downtown corridor will be proceeding as planned this year, said Carson City Transportation Manager Patrick Pittenger.

Construction is expected to begin in March and last until November, Pittenger said, but the project is not going to interfere with Nevada Day Parade festivities.

By then, he said, all of the messy work will be finished and what’s left will be mostly clean-up items.

“We will be open for Nevada Day,” Pittenger said. “When we’re done, Carson Street will be one lane in each direction.”

Carson City MAC center opening rescheduled to Dec. 30

Delays in construction materials has forced a change in the grand opening schedule of the multi-purpose athletic center, also known as the MAC. The grand opening of the facility has been rescheduled for Dec. 30, 5:30 p.m.

Carson City Public Works to haul yard debris

As trees continue to shed their leaves, Carson City Public Works asks citizens to take pride in the city by pruning trees, shrubs and raking up leaves. Public Works will pick up your leaf, limbs and yard debris free of charge for a certain time. See the flier above.
