The Nevada Artists Association invites local and regional artists and photographers to enter its 64th Annual "Nevada Day" Art Exhibit at Carson City's Brewery Arts Center NAA Gallery. This judged exhibition opens Monday October 27th and runs through December. The show is open to all Northern Nevada and California artist and photographers, NAA membership is not required.

In celebration of Nevada’s 150th Anniversary of Statehood, several locally owned farms have transformed their corn fields into intricate Sesquicentennial themed corn mazes. Tours will be at various times throughout September, October and November. Six different Nevada farms will host a wide array of activities and games including corn mazes, petting zoos, pumpkin patches, prizes, and more.

This week's guest on It's Your City is Nicole Goehring, recycling coordinator for the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection. She provides an update on statewide and local recycling figures and places where residents can take their items.

NevadaRecycles, a program through NDEP, is committed to reducing waste and increasing recycling opportunities. Its mission is to preserve and enhance the environment of the state in order to protect public health, sustain healthy ecosystems, and contribute to a vibrant economy. It was established in 1992.

The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection is making materials available to participants in the statewide Recycled Art Contest. Recyclables, including plastic bottles, newspapers, aluminum cans and steel cans, may be picked-up in the lobby of the Bryan Building, 901 S. Stewart Street, Carson City, on Friday, Oct. 3. This second annual Friends of Brooks Golf Tournament will be held Oct. 5 at Empire Ranch Golf Course in Carson City to honor Brooks Brolsma; his parents Allison and Owen Brolsma started the ‘Friends of Brooks Foundation’ in recognition of the need local families have when a loved one requires extensive medical treatment outside our immediate area. They appreciate the love and support shown them by friends, family, and local businesses, and have been raising money for Northern Nevadan families since.

The Carson City Chamber of Commerce is holding the 5th Annual Chairman’s Scramble Golf Tournament on September 26 at Silver Oak Golf Course. All proceeds to benefit Carson High Culinary Pro Start and SkillsUSA organizations. The event has a 12:30 PM shotgun start and costs $25 per person. You must RSVP by calling 882-1565.

Dog lovers and their pooches by the dozens turned out Saturday for the third annual 5K9 run and walk at River View Park in Carson City.

The event was a fundraiser for the Carson Animal Services Initiative, also known as CASI, which brought out canines that ranged from the yipping pint-sized and standard to those with muscle mass and brawn that packed hearty barks. Christy Works was the winner with her dog Shags.

Carson Animal Services Initiative volunteers have some fun activities scheduled for dogs and dog lovers during the month of September, starting off with the 5K9 run/walk on Saturday, Sept. 20. The event will take place at the River View Park at the end of east Fifth Street. Registration starts at 8:15 a.m. Start time is at 9 a.m. Registration fee is $25 for the first person, additional family members are $15. Please note that dogs must be leashed at all times.

The Nevada Recycles program has partnered with Las Vegas Sands Corp. to support a statewide recycled art contest to increase Nevadans’ awareness and interest in recycling.

Entrants must be Nevada residents and projects must be composed of used recyclable materials. Submission of entry form and photos of artwork are due by Oct. 31, 2014.

In addition to a $200 prize to the first place class project, Las Vegas Sands Corp. will provide first, second and third ($250, $100, and $50 respectively) prizes in four categories: Kindergarten-grade 5, grades 6-8, grades 9-12 and Adult.
