The Downtown Business Association’s monthly Wine Walk pays no heed to what the weather serves up, and this Saturday has rain on the menu. Bundle up, grab an umbrella and your friends, and brave the weather for this fun event.

How adventurous are you? Ascent Runs continues their Be Bold, Run in the Cold Winter Trail Series with a five or ten kilometer run starting at Centennial Park. If you’d like a less strenuous outdoor activity, then the Downtown Business Association’s monthly Wine Walk is a perfect choice. The wine walk is a rain, snow, or shine event, so bring an umbrella. As part of FoodMaxx’s entry into the Nevada marketplace with new stores in Carson City and Sparks, the grocery chain held an online sweepstakes, encouraging shoppers at both stores to register at FoodMaxx.com to receive email-only weekly specials. The contest ran from Nov. 16 through Dec. 27.

The 3rd Annual Early Childhood Expo is schedule for Saturday, March 4, 2017 from 9am-1pm. The Carson City Early Childhood Advisory is now accepting vendor registrations for the Early Childhood Expo.

The fifth annual Youth Wildlife Conservation Experience will take place Saturday, January 21st from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm in the Mt. Rose Ballrooms of the Reno-Sparks Convention Center in Reno. This free event for families is designed to excite and inspire the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts and conservationists.

With just a few hours of 2016 remaining on the West Coast, arguably the world's largest New Year's Eve bash in New York City's Times Square culminated at 9 p.m. Pacific Standard Time with the real time midnight ball drop watched by guests at the Carson Plaza Hotel Events Center Saturday night in Carson City.

Hello fellow anglers, I hope you have a safe and Happy New Year. I will be bringing in the Naw year at Topaz Lake with 500 other freezing souls. The water level is up 12 feet from this time last year, both of the boat launches will be open. The Topaz Landing Marina will be open with rental boats this year.

Celebrate New Years with CASI bingo. That's right CASI will be hosting bingo at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverley Drive on New Years day! Bring your friends and family for a fun and exciting afternoon of bingo. In addition to the prize money given to the winners of the games there will be raffle prizes and a 50/50 drawing too. Doors will open at 11:30 AM and the first game will start at 12:30. Buy-in is $10 and extra packets are $5. All other games are $1. The snack bar will be open offering hot dogs, chips and candy. Sometimes the wonderful CASI volunteers will bring soup.

It’s winter break for all the schoolchildren, and thankfully the Arlington Square Ice Rink opens every day at 10 a.m. A few hours of ice skating is sure to wear them out. The Carson City Library is sponsoring a winter read-a-thon for those who would rather stay bundled up warm and cozy. Dance away those holiday calories at High Sierra Swing Dance Club’s weekly ‘night out’ get together at El Charro Avita. The Firkin and Fox has all-ages karaoke if you’re ready to sing something that isn’t a Christmas Carol.

MONDAY: Kwanzaa

Raynna Jackson began helping with Toys for Tots at the Ron Wood center before Thanksgiving in order to fulfill her CHS Senior Project graduation requirement; she decided to help give underprivileged children a Merry Christmas.

She started by putting boxes at CHS and her mother’s place of employment, Natel Company. Toys for Tots serves more than 2,000 Carson City area kids every Christmas, and Raynna took this personally; she wanted to help bring in even more gifts. Raynna ultimately facilitated the gathering of 2 large boxes of toys.

Just a few days left before the big day. Get your fill of holiday music as the Ninth Annual Christmas Carol Play-along for Strings returns to Carson Mall. Even if you don’t play an instrument, voices are more than welcome to contribute to the tunes. Wintertime is perfect for curling up with a good book, join the Library’s Winter Read-a-thon to win some great prizes. Carson Cigar Company is throwing a party featuring Ev ‘Cheese the Knife’ Musselman of the Tripping King Snakes: they’ve been selling raffle tickets to benefit Food for Thought, so head down to support this great charity.

Join the Carson City Library in reading during the winter break! The read-a-thoon begins on December 22, 2016 and lasts through January 5, 2017. There will be a half way point check in on 1/3/17 from 3-4pm at the Carson City Library, 900 N Roop Street. The Sierra-Tahoe Branch and Ladies Auxiliary Unit #137 of the Fleet Reserve Association held their Annual Christmas Party at Jethro’s Oven - Grill, Gardnerville. The food was plentiful and enjoyed by everyone, along with fabulous yummy desserts prepared by Brenda Horton, President of the Ladies Auxiliary. A big thank you to Larry Knack and Rick Athenour for arranging the event.

Wonderful raffle prizes were donated by local stores, including a $100 Walmart gift card. Thank you to Sue Higgins for securing the raffle prizes and displaying them so nicely.

Organizers of the annual Holiday Crawl estimate they made about $10,000 for the Holiday with a Hero shopping spree that benefits children in need in the community.

Youth Theatre Carson City is thrilled to announce its upcoming holiday fundraiser performance, Showstoppers’ Elvis Holiday Spectacular, a non-stop evening of song, dance, holiday cheer, raffle prizes and more.

Enjoy a break from the wet weather today, rain is expected to return Tuesday. The Arlington Square Ice Rink is temporarily closed due to some storm damage sustained over the weekend, but the great people of the Parks and Recreation Department are working hard to have it up and running soon. Enjoy an evening with the girls at Bella Fiore tonight. A Sip and Shop event featuring local vendors begins at 5 p.m. If you’re interested in the theater, consider attending the board meeting for the Proscenium Players tonight.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum and the Friends of the Nevada State Railroad Museum, have added an additional Santa Train ride for children in our community who are battling cancer on Dec. 17 in Carson City.

Students finding their future careers before they have even graduated from high school has been an evolution in the making and who would have thought?

However, between Carson High School’s Senior Project graduation requirement, made possible by the generous working community of Carson City, the myriad of old and newly formed clubs offered to the students of Carson High, and on-site income earners like The Greenhouse Project, not to mention the Career and Technical Education Jump Start program offered through Western Nevada College, students are figuring out quickly that high school is not the end of their education before starting a career, it is where they may actually begin their careers.

The Santa Train is arriving this weekend and next weekend in Carson City at the Nevada State Railroad Museum. Trains operate this Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 10-11 and next weekend, Dec. 17-18.

Friends of the Carson City Library is hosting a New York New Year's Eve Party on Dec. 31st from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Carson Plaza Event Center, 211 E. 9th Street.

Proceeds from this event will provide funds to the Carson City Library for equipment. Dinner will be a buffet of tri-tip or shrimp.

It’s a winter wonderland out there, but it does come with unique perils. Please give yourself extra time to get where you’re going, the roads may be slick. The weekend is quickly approaching bringing fun events like the State Railroad Museum’s Santa Train, a special performance by Antsy McClain at the Brewery Arts Center, and the return of the drive-through Living Nativity at the United Methodist Church. If you’re itching for the chance to get your picture with Santa, head to Red’s Old 395 tonight. Stretch your vocal cords with karaoke at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar or at Living the Good Life.

The final push is on to recognize local gallery, Artsy Fartsy, in a national competition. The national business movement Independent We Stand has declared Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery in Carson City among the quarter finalists for the 2016 Independent We Stand Small Business of the Year Award. Only 25 small businesses across America have made it to this round.
