Tonight’s the night! With one flip of the switch all of downtown joins in the Christmas Spirit. The Silver and Snowflakes Festival includes carols, sleigh rides, hot chocolate, and of course, the lighting of the Capitol. Don’t forget to head to the First Presbyterian Church for the Annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser. You’ll get a handmade, hand painted ceramic bowl to keep and lots of yummy food to keep you warm. The talented kids of Wild Horse Children’s Theater hit the stage for opening night of ‘Elf Jr.

Happy Friday, Carson City. Today is the last day of early voting, so head to the courthouse today or wait until Tuesday to make your voice heard. Don’t miss the Fine Arts Faire at Carson Mall: several of our local artists would be glad to meet you. Enjoy some live music tonight: Living the Good Life and Glen Eagles are a great place for dinner and some entertainment. It’s the first Friday which means Improv night at Brewery Arts Center. Break a leg to the members of Western Nevada Musical Theater Company. Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid’ opens its three week run tonight.

Happy Birthday Nevada. My favorite holiday has arrived, and with it a mountain of fun to be had. Normally my weekend list is sorted by chronological start time, but for this one I will be separating out the downtown parade related activities for your ease. Parade Day Fun Stuff in Downtown Carson City:

Let’s just call this Nevad-oween weekend. So much crazy fun awaits: whether it’s the celebration of our ‘new’ downtown, Halloween parties for kids and adults alike, or our State Museum’s 75th Anniversary. Start your day at the Museum, hang around for the downtown ribbon cutting and festivities, then join in the costumed fun as Blinky Man hits the streets. Do the time warp at the Brewery Arts Center: the Rocky Horror Picture Show Party starts at 8:30 p.m. This is going to be one amazing weekend, so let’s get this party started.

Nevada is one of the few states that celebrate its Admission Day, and boy do we throw a party. A parade, competitions of strength and facial hair, hot air balloons, bloody marys, a carnival, pow wow, and free chili are just a few of the festivities awaiting the capital city on Saturday.

The party begins Friday this year with a ribbon cutting celebration of the 'new' downtown. The Nevada State Museum hits its 75th Anniversary this year and will have a day full of fun and surprises. Keep reading to see where you need to take advantage of all the best this holiday weekend has to offer.

As Nevada looks to observe its statehood this weekend, the Washoe tribe is also planning a celebration of its heritage.

“The Washoe tribe has been here 18,000 to 25,000 years,” said Martin Montgomery, who is organizing the powwow through the Red Hoop Singers. “It’s all a collaboration of community.”

It’s that time of year again. The ghosts and ghouls come out of hiding and paint the town orange. Halloween isn’t just one night around here. Combined with the festivities of Nevada Day, you can be sure to enjoy at least a week’s worth of celebrating.

Saturday, Oct. 22:

It’s Friday, Carson City. Time to shake off the workweek and take a break. The Trippin King Snakes hit the stage at Living the Good Life and will keep you on the dance floor. Capital City Arts Initiative keeps three galleries packed with new and interesting exhibits. Today, they welcome artist Chelsea Pegram to their space on the second floor of the Courthouse: all are welcome to the reception this evening at 5 p.m. The night sky is the topic of today’s program at Washoe Lake State Park; look up after dusk for a chance to catch some shooting stars.

FRIDAY:

Welcome to the weekend, Carson City. Happenings, going-ons, and to-dos can be found all over. Early birds catch the Great Reno Balloon Race, while night owls can enjoy karaoke and live music. Kids won’t want to miss out on the Young Eagle flights at the Carson Airport, just make sure to get there on time. Learn about Roswell at the WNC Observatory or meet Author Sandie LaNae at Artsy Fartsy. Our valley offers something for everyone, keep reading and see.

SATURDAY:

The long weekend lets us hold onto summer a little bit longer. Enjoy an interfaith community picnic on the lawn at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. Bring something to share, your plates and utensils, and something for the F.I.S.H. food drive. Watch out for playa dust. Ribs and cantaloupes are on the menu today if you want to head out to Sparks or Fallon, respectively. Stay local and let the Elks Club serve you up some pancakes at their monthly breakfast. Genoa offers up a fun afternoon with friends: Sweet Sippin Sunday begins at 1 p.m. The Summer Concert Series at the Nugget offers up a tribute to Tom Petty and Bob Seger with Double Trouble. SUNDAY:

There are multiple ways to say farewell to summer this weekend. The Best in the West Rib Cook-off is a local favorite, as is the Fallon Cantaloupe Festival. SILVER CITY, Nev. — The "Silver Pavilion" Inaugura- Palooza concert on August 20th was a big success with at least 150 folks from near and far in attendance during the 6 hour event. The festival style public event was held to celebrate the much anticipated addition of a new outdoor stage to the region's arts and music scene.

As the Nevada State Museum prepares to celebrate its 75th Anniversary on October 31, 2016, the Friends of the Nevada State Museum are preparing an introductory class for volunteers and tour guides at the museum and Nevada State Capitol in Carson City.

Are you ready for the new school year? One last weekend of summer break before the kids of Carson City head back, so make the most of it. Jazz and Beyond takes it up a notch in its final few days with eight hours of non-stop music downtown. Western Nevada College new soccer team plays its first home game today against Folsom Lake Community College. The Interfaith Community of Carson City will host the eighth annual interfaith potluck picnic and food drive on the lawn of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on Monday, September 5, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to share food, conversation, music, and fun activities with community members of all faiths.

Fifteen days of non-stop music begins tonight at the Bliss Mansion with the Jazz and Beyond Garden Party; don’t miss out on the fabulous art show, tours of the historic home, and great jams. Downtown will be rocking tonight as the Carson High Class of 86 celebrates their reunion in Telegraph Square with two live bands. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun. Just down the street, Living the Good Life welcomes Southbound Train followed by DJ Bobby G. Fuji Park is the place to be for cowboys, broncs, and a great concert celebrating Carson City.

Welcome to July, Carson City. How do you want to start out the month? For some laughs, head to Carson Comedy in the Nugget Casino or Improv Night at the Brewery Arts Center. Take the kids to Carson Hot Springs: free admission for those under 18 today. Break a leg, Wild Horse Children’s Theater. Aladdin Jr. opens tonight at the Carson City Community Center. Mills Park is home to a carnival for the long weekend, so grab yourself a funnel cake or a spin on the Ferris Wheel tonight until 10 p.m.

FRIDAY:

What a week. Granted, it was a short one, but school got out for the summer and we saw the weather go from a wintery chill to summery hot. Get your early primary vote in this afternoon, then stick around for the Artist Reception for the new exhibit in the CCAI Gallery upstairs in the Courthouse Building. Live music can be found at our bigger casinos, and a dj will keep you on the dance floor at Jimmy G’s, Alatte in the Carson Nugget, and Living the Good Life. Sassafras welcomes Bryan McPherson to the stage at 8 pm; you’ll want to get there earlier to take full advantage of their menu.

Our beloved wife, mother, sister and friend, Toni Marie Davis passed away on April 28, 2016. Toni loved her flowers, gardening, cooking and her family. Her presence would light up any room. Toni in survived by her husband (Lewis), son (Donald), stepson (Andrew), granddaughter (Aariyah), nieces, nephews, and her extended family and friends. Toni touched the lives of so many with her smile, laughter, and generosity. She will be truly missed.

The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe is pleased to announce that the 2016 Pyramid Lake War Memorial Celebration will take place on Friday May, 20th in Nixon, NV. The Tribe would like to invite the public and their families to participate in the annual Sunrise Ceremony and the Eagle Staff Run walk/run along the Truckee River from the Numana Hatchery to the Nixon Gym.

If you were looking for a lazy day, today might not be it. Carson City BMX welcomes moms to the track today; their Mother’s Day race was postponed due to the wet weather. Ready to have some fun? Virginia City’s Chili on the Comstock Cook-off goes on all weekend. For some healthier fare, hit up the Spring Farmers Market downtown. Go fly a kite at Dangberg Home Historic Park, just past Douglas High School on Highway 88; their ‘Something in the Wind’ Celebration is both Saturday and Sunday. Don’t forget to leave non-perishable food by your mailbox: the annual ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ food drive is today. Take a gander at the whole list, there is plenty of stuff to do in the Carson City area this weekend.

Nothing will rain on our parade, Carson City. In addition to the monthly wine walk, the weekend offers a carnival, train rides, the Kentucky Derby, Mother’s Day and more. Tonight, Western Nevada Musical Theater Company debuts their spring musical ‘42nd Street.’ Find improv at the Brewery Arts Center or Comedy at the Carson Nugget. Drinking with Clowns hits the stage at Sassafras and Motown is on the menu at Living the Good Life. Food with friends is in order at Silver City’s Community Dinner Night or at A to Zen’s first ‘Fancy Friday’ open mic night.

Since the early 1980s, May has been a month for celebrating historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada. This year, the theme acknowledges the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, which helps to stabilize neighborhoods and downtowns, contributes to public education, attracts investment, creates jobs, generates tax revenues, supports small business and affordable housing, and powers Nevada’s heritage tourism industry.
