Fitness, music, film and Count Basie: Events around Carson City for Tuesday, August 20

Having made it through the first day of school in Carson City, it is onward and upward as we head into Tuesday, August 20, 2019. Events around the area include fitness hikes and bike ride, a free floral design class at Silver City School House, art showings and Congressman Mark Amodei at Casino Fandango. Also featured is the launch of the Jukebox International Film Festival at the community center, a jazz quintet performance at Comma Courtyard and the 115th birthday celebration of Count Basie as part of the Jazz and Beyond music festival. Muscle Powered Tuesday Morning Walk: Special Downtown Tour. 8 a.m. Join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City. Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building. A schedule of all upcoming activities and events can be found at www.musclepowered.org/calendar. Special Downtown Walking Tour is featured Tuesday. This special tour will be a 90 minute historical tour through downtown Carson Street and Curry Street. Meet at 8 a.m. in the parking lot on the corner of 5th Street and South Carson Street, behind the Sierra Cosmetic Dental Center at 501 S. Carson Street. (there is an old sign that says Ormsby House parking).

Music Flicks and Kicks: Jukebox International Film Festival begins. Events scheduled throughout the day. A festive gathering that celebrates music-themed films arrives in Carson City beginning Tuesday, delivering top-notch features about music and musicians, styles, songwriting and music video making. The Jukebox International Film Festival is the place music and flicks collide, bringing enthusiasts and artists together from across the country to the capital city for three days, offering free showings, meet-and-greets and more. The festival is presented in conjunction with Jazz and Beyond: Carson City Music Festival, a three-week, multi-venue concert series underway in the capital city. JIFF is designed to compliment the music festival by presenting films that celebrate music and musicians. The film festival runs this Tuesday through Thursday, August 20-22, at the Bob Boldrick Theater inside the Carson City Community Center.

Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: New Crop 2019. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) presents its exhibition, New Crop 2019, by artists Mark Combs and Frances Melhop. Carson City Courthouse Gallery, 885 E Musser St., Carson City.

Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: Graphically Defined. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) is delighted to present Graphically Defined, a group exhibition of work by seventeen Western Nevada College students. This exhibit includes a wide variety of art including ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting and photography that shows the diversity of the students’ creativity. The Business Resource Innovation Center (BRIC) is open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. 108 E Proctor St., Carson City.

Free Floral Design Class for Adults and Teens at Silver City School House. 10 a.m. Learn to create beautiful floral arrangements with wildflowers you’ve collected, or flowers from your own garden, with expert tips from Community Roots & Shoots’ Floral Designer, Lynnette Edmondson. No flowers? Lynnette can bring some for you. This free class has limited space. To reserve your spot, please RSVP to quest@theodata.com. Floral Designer Lynnette Edmondson brings over a decade of experience to Community Roots & Shoots as a previous Floral Manager for Albertson’s, and the owner of her own floral business. Community Roots & Shoots is Healthy Communities Coalition’s nonprofit garden center, floral and gift shop. Proceeds benefit school gardens, job training programs and more.

U.S. Representative Mark Amodei at Casino Fandango. 11 a.m. U.S. Representative Mark Amodei will be the guest speaker at the upcoming Tuesday, August 20 meeting of the Carson City Republican Women's Club. The public is invited to join us at the Casino Fandango Ballroom, Carson City to hear Representative Amodei provide the group with an update on the House of Representatives activities and his insight as to what is happening in Washington, D.C. Jazz and Beyond: Judith Ames Quintet at Comma Courtyard. 5 to 7 p.m. The group is Judith Ames, vocals; Rocky Tatarelli, tenor sax; Peter Supersano, keys; Mike Mayhall, upright bass; and Dennis Steele, drums. Originally from Milwaukee, Judith has always had a passion for music, from playing classical piano, French horn, and folk guitar in days gone by, to her many years as a church organist, and most recently, as a jazz singer. A longtime UNR Spanish professor (under her original name, Judith Ames Whitenack), she was inspired some years ago by the great Detroit saxophonist Rocky Tatarelli to develop her vocal skills. Over the years, she has been performing in Reno and Carson City, the San Francisco Bay Area, Milwaukee, and Madrid, with Rocky Tatarelli (now her husband), and a rotating group of the best jazz musicians in the area. Judith favors jazz standards from the 1930s and 1940s, vocal versions of jazz tunes from the 1950s and 1960s, and a variety of Latin tunes, which she sings in the original Spanish and Portuguese. She also sings in French and Italian. The Comma Courtyard is located at 312 S. Carson St., Carson City.

Muscle Powered Evening Hike at Longview Canyon. 5:30 p.m. Join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City. Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building. The Tuesday evening hike will be along the Longview Canyon Trail and Lincoln Bypass. Meets at 5:30 p.m. Hikes are typically 1-1/2 hours or more duration and are 4-6 miles in length. Water and closed-toed shoes are required. Hat and poles recommended. Meet in the small parking area opposite Longview Way on Kings Canyon Road.

Tuesday Evening Ladies MTB Ride is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Meetup at Foothill Drive just off of North Winnie Lane. Rides are open to all skill levels. All riders must carry water and have a mountain bike in safe working condition, helmet, closed toed shoes, spare tube, pump and tools to change a flat tire. Tuesday night archery shoots return to Carson City's Centennial Park Archery Range. 5:30 p.m. Every Tuesday evening, 5:30 to dusk, the Clear Creek Bowmen host its Tuesday Night Archery Shoots at the Centennial Park Archery Range in Carson City. Both traditional and 3D targets are available. The target range is open shooting for use at no cost. There is a $5 fee (kids 17 and under are free) to shoot the 3D animal targets. We have archery equipment, volunteers and instructors to get you started. Come on out and join us. It’s a great way to experience the world of archery. Open to all ages. Art Night Out at Carson City Library. 6 to 7 p.m. Supplies are limited, register in advance online here. Join us once a month to relax through art! Every month we will explore a different technique to use art to help de-stress. All artistic levels welcome. Please note: Children 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Roop Street.

Empty Bowls, Open Studio. 6 to 8:30 p.m. Create an empty bowl to donate to charity, instruction will be offered to create and paint a bowl or create something on our own during open studio session. Open studio time at Ogres-Holm Pottery is free of charge and open to the public. 1215 South Carson Street.

Silver State Model T Ford Club meeting. 7 p.m. The Silver State Model T Ford Club will meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 20 at Red’s Old 395 Grill, 10455 S. Carson Street in Carson City. Optional no-host dinner precedes the meeting at 6:00 p.m. Anyone interested in Model T Ford cars or trucks is welcome to attend. This club is organized to have fun, go on tours and help each other with our Model Ts. Spouses are also welcome. Jazz and Beyond: Mile High Jazz Band presents Count Basie 115th Birthday. 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Bob McFadden Plaza. The Carson City jazz music festival began in 2004, then called “Basie at 100,” to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of William “Count” Basie (Aug. 21, 1904-April 26, 1984). Today, Mile High Jazz Band, an 18-member big band with vocalist Jakki Ford, celebrates his 115th birthday a day early. They will play tunes played by the Basie band, arranged by Basie-band arrangers, and other Basie-era and more contemporary tunes to celebrate his life and influence. The program features ballads, high-powered jazz tunes, and dance music. Mile High Jazz Band performs throughout the year for community events, fundraisers, dances, receptions, private parties, and in concert, and collaborates with poets in quarterly Jazz & Poetry performances. Hear them at Living the Good Life or Comma Coffee on the second Tuesday of each month. This is a free event featured at the Bob McFadden Plaza. Seating is limited. WNC Continuing Education offers Zumba class. 5:45 p.m. Zumba is a dance form and aerobics fitness program. Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic Latin and pop music from countries around the world. The choreography incorporates hip hop, soca, samba, salsa, meringue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included. Students should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes, and bring a towel, water and a positive attitude! No prior dance experience is required - Zumba is about making friends, getting a workout, and enjoying yourself! Dance Workshop for Couples at Yaple's Ballroom. In this beginner level workshop you must have a partner in this class, we will not be rotating. It can be a friend, husband, wife, boyfriend or girlfriend, you just have to have a buddy with you to be your partner. We are going to learn the style of dance of Night Club Two Step and some other exercises that will help you with your connection to your partner. $20. Carson Medical Group broke ground on their new 31,000 square foot facility off old Hot Springs Road in October 2022 and this June it will officially open its doors to patients.

UPDATE 12:42PM: Southbound I-580 in Carson City was opened as of around 11 a.m., said a Nevada State Police spokeswoman, who provided more details of the fatal crash that happened early Wednesday morning.

Both the driver of a car and a truck involved in the crash died. Their names have not been released pending notification of family members. The car, which was going the wrong way — northbound in the southbound lane — struck the truck and caught on fire, according to a NSP preliminary investigation thus far. The vehicle makes are unknown at this time.

Dayton Elementary School in Lyon County was honored Wednesday along 13 other schools including Carson High in Carson City as a Nevada Purple Star School.

Schools receiving the designation have committed to supporting the educational and social-emotional needs of military-connected children and their families.

Junior Park Ranger Day is back this Saturday, April 27 at Riverview Park in Carson City.

Junior Park Ranger Day is an annual event dedicated to help kids complete their Junior Ranger Adventure Guides and be sworn in all in one day.

Carson City School District hosted a ceremony Wednesday morning with local dignitaries from the Nevada Department of Education and officers from local military bases. Carson High School was honored with a Nevada Purple Star School designation for supporting military-connected students and their families.

A 37-year-old man was arrested for suspicion of obstruction, trespassing and felony sex offender failing to register, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Laura Ricks, TOSA/Instructional Coach at Empire Elementary School, was honored as the Carson City School District’s Educator of the Year, at the Tuesday, April 23, school board meeting and annual event.

Additionally, Sandra Guzzetta, special education paraprofessional at Bordewich Bray Elementary School, was recognized as the Education Support Professional Employee of the Year, and Chelise Crookshanks, principal at Mark Twain Elementary School, was recognized as the district’s Administrator of the Year.

Tickets are now available for this summer’s Capital City Brewfest. This year’s event takes place June 22 on Curry Street at McFadden Plaza in Carson City. "Walking as One at 1" happens on World Labyrinth Day each year where participants across the globe engage in a labyrinth walk at 1 p.m. local time. This synchronized practice creates a 24-hour rolling wave of peaceful energy that passes from one time zone to the next across the world.
