Carson City is facing the same problems other growing communities throughout the nation are: a lack of affordable housing which in turn is causing a gap in the workforce for important careers that require technical training.

Local non-profit GREENevada announced Thursday the winners of the 2020 Golden Pinecone Sustainability Awards, a prestigious annual event recognizing local individuals and organizations working towards a more sustainable Nevada.

From sunny days and warm temperatures to anticipated overnight freezing ahead, fall weather will arrive over the next few days around the Carson City region, prompting a freeze watch by the National Weather Service and a warning for gardeners to bring in the tomato plants and other fall vegetables that haven't been harvested.

After a windy Saturday knocked out power and downed a few trees around Carson City, unseasonable cold air will continue to move into the Carson City region Sunday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Freeze Warning from Sunday night through Monday morning.

Carson Now is compiling a list of local businesses that are allowed to be open during the COVID-19 closure, similar to the list we created for restaurants doing takeout or delivery.

Thanks to the generosity of the community and the William N. Pennington Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities Northern Nevada will be renovating all 12 bedrooms of the Ronald McDonald House in Reno.

The outpouring of support for RMHC at the recent Red Shoe Gala was overwhelming, as attendees donated $100,000 during the live auction and paddle raise portions of the event, which the Pennington Foundation offered to match in support of renovations to the 30-plus year old Ronald McDonald House. All $200,000 will be used for the remodeling project.

Events include the 30th annual Outhouse Races in Virginia City, American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event in Carson City, Fright Night at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, Oktoberfest at the Casino Fandango, the 26th annual 'Making a Difference' Golf Tournament and much more!

First off, the good news
If you are considering purchasing a rental property, just about all of your expenses are tax deductible (unless you rent to family members). Your mortgage loan interest, property taxes, and maintenance expenses are all allowable deductions. Your accountant may find other deductions for you as well, such as a 27-year depreciation rule.

Pets of the Homeless, the only national nonprofit organization focused on feeding and providing emergency veterinary care to pets of homeless people, is looking to expand its national network of veterinarians to provide emergency veterinary care.

The Carson City School District is pleased to report that all samples taken from water fountains and fixtures at school sites had lead levels well below the project Action Level for drinking water. The water quality threshold for lead in drinking water is expressed as an Action Level, which in this case is 20 micrograms per liter or higher (ug/L, also known as parts per billion).

An excavator has been removing chunks of the Kinkead Building throughout the week, taking apart one of Carson City skyline's most notorious and poorly constructed buildings ever.
