CHS opened its doors a little longer, a little wider, and totally unplugged for Sept. 11-17, 2017. Students and staff participated in daily activities supporting and encouraging a non-digital learning environment. Each day, five standards of Social and Emotional Learning were touched by encouraging students to power-down their phones and unplug.

CARSON CITY — Next week, Sept. 11-15, Carson High School will encourage students and staff to disconnect from technology to better reconnect with each other. The CHS Social Emotional Learning Committee and school administrators decided to dedicate a week to the cause.

Six years ago, shots rang out and Carson City was thrust into the middle of a tragedy. Four people died in the IHOP shooting, three of them National Guard members. Today, they will be honored again during the annual Remembrance Run. If you are driving along Fairview, please give them some extra room. Wheeled Truck Wednesday at the Brewery Arts Center is a ‘weather permitting’ event, so keep your eye out for rain clouds.

Carson High School will open its doors a little wider and longer Sept. 13 for a unique Back-to-School Night event.
More than 25 local community service providers will line the hallways of Senator Square for a community fair beginning at 4:30 p.m. The fair will highlight Carson City activities, family friendly events and provide information and screenings for a variety of local health services.

On the agenda is a discussion of their upcoming short film competition and a recap of last week’s Jukebox International Film Festival.

The concerts in the Capital Amphitheater have always been a local favorite: blanket and a picnic are all you need to make the most of this Sunday afternoon. Flashback to yesteryear at the Virginia City ‘Way it Was Rodeo.’ The Trippin King Snakes take the stage at the Genoa Bar Porch Party. Food and drink will be available, and it’s a great way to wind down the weekend.

Make this weekend something special. School starts up on Monday and it will be Halloween before we blink an eye. The Carl Howell Memorial Music Festival at Battle Born Harley boasts a full day of live music, vendors, activities and family fun. Downtown Carson City will see the first of three monthly Beer Crawls; if you get there early, head over to Remedy’s to witness their yearly Bloody Mary Competition. The Carson Chamber Singers of Carson City, Nevada, will participate in a patriotic memorial service at the 99th annual American Legion National Convention in Reno on Sunday, August 20, 11 a.m., at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center.

Today’s the day. Archie, the Reno Aces mascot, has been entrusted to once again oversee the grand opening of the Carson City Fair at Fuji Park. The soft opening of the accompanying carnival begins at 6 p.m. with one dollar rides. It’s Miss Scarlet with the lead pipe in the Observatory as the Carson City Library hosts a super-sized game of Clue for teens. Families will enjoy Beauty and the Beast, complete with a craft, if they sign up for the Library’s movie night. The weekend is inching closer, and bringing with it one of Carson City’s favorite events – The Taste of Downtown. Celebrate Independence Day with the Carson City Symphony, Carson City Symphony Chorus, and guest singer CeCe Gable at Mormon Station State Park in Genoa. Parade, festivities, five bands, games, old-time jams, chicken dinners, raffles, and more begin at 10 a.m.

The Carson Valley Pops Orchestra is bringing back their traditional July Fourth Concert in the Park.

Set for 11:30 a.m. at Heritage Park in Gardnerville, right after the Gardnerville Fun Run, this free concert is an ideal way for families to celebrate the Fourth in an old fashioned, small town setting. Bring your picinic and a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy the patriotic line up of traditional July Fourth tunes.
