Sierra Lutheran High School senior receives National Merit Scholarship commendation
Sierra Lutheran High School Principal, Dr. Tami Seddon announced Thursday that senior Aleyna Gilson has been named a Commended Student in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program.
A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, was presented to this scholastically talented senior this past week.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2018 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2018 competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
“The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”
Aleyna Gilson - a graduate of Bethlehem Lutheran School in Carson City, and a current Senior at Sierra Lutheran High School - is not only academically accomplished, but exhibits excellence outside the classroom as well. “SLHS is very proud to have students of Aleyna’s caliber on campus,” explains Dr. Seddon. “She excels academically, athletically, and musically.”
At Sierra Lutheran, she is on the Varsity Basketball team (2017 League Champions), and the Varsity Track & Field Team (State Champions twice during her participation on the team). She is a violinist in the Reno Philharmonic Youth Symphony Orchestra, and she traveled to Carnegie Hall in May 2016 for a special appearance. Locally, she plays for SLHS’s weekly chapel, as well as at Lifepoint and First Presbyterian churches. Aleyna is also a member of the National Honors Society.
