Open House

The Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation is hosting an Open House at the historic Wungnema House located in Mills Park, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 27, 2017. Admission to the open house is free. This will be an opportunity to learn about this historic building and about the Foundation.

Make this weekend something special. School starts up on Monday and it will be Halloween before we blink an eye. The Carl Howell Memorial Music Festival at Battle Born Harley boasts a full day of live music, vendors, activities and family fun. Bowers Mansion plays host to the annual Bluegrass Festival – bring a picnic and enjoy. Downtown Carson City will see the first of three monthly Beer Crawls; if you get there early, head over to Remedy’s to witness their yearly Bloody Mary Competition. There is something for everyone this weekend, so keep reading and find your fun.

As back-to-school supplies start rolling out in stores, Sierra Lutheran High School’s administrative team is already gearing up for the school’s 16th school year. The school enthusiastically welcomes Dr. Tami Seddon, a Carson Valley native, as their new principal following the retirement of Reverend Juls Clausen. Dr. Seddon, a UC Davis and Stanford alumna, has been with the school since its inception as both a teacher and academic dean.

Today’s the day. Archie, the Reno Aces mascot, has been entrusted to once again oversee the grand opening of the Carson City Fair at Fuji Park. The soft opening of the accompanying carnival begins at 6 p.m. with one dollar rides. It’s Miss Scarlet with the lead pipe in the Observatory as the Carson City Library hosts a super-sized game of Clue for teens. Families will enjoy Beauty and the Beast, complete with a craft, if they sign up for the Library’s movie night. Families and residents were treated to an open house Saturday hosted by the Carson City Public Works Department at its corporate yard off Butti Way.

What to do, what to do? That’s the question that starts most every weekend. If you’ve got kids, test their mettle at the annual Capitol City Triathlon. Open to kids of all ages, they will bike, run, and swim their way to the finish line. The third annual Sassabration event kicks off with a multi-colored, costume bike parade from the Brewery Arts Center to the celebration at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint. Multiple bands, vendors, non-profit booths, free swimming at the Carson Hot Springs, not to mention the yummy food and drink available make this a not-to-be-missed festival.

The Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation will present Community Service Awards for year 2017 recipients in a brief ceremony on Wednesday, July 12, 2017, at 5:30 p.m. at the monument at the entrance to the Marv Teixeira Pavilion in Mills Park.

Let the good times roll. Head over to Mills Park in Carson City for the annual RSVP Carnival and catch some high-flying skate-boarding action. You’ll find the historic Wungnema House open for tours at the very east end of the park. One price gets you unlimited rides at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, and plenty of photo opportunities with their historic steamer. The Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation is hosting an Open House and demonstration of disc golf at the historic Wungnema House located in Mills Park, from 2 to 5 p.m. this Sunday, July 2.

The weekends seem to start earlier in summertime. Head down to Mills Park for the first of the rat-rods rolling in for this weekend’s Rockabilly Riot and to catch the motorcycle cops running some practice loops around the obstacle course. Seniors can head to the Community Center for vouchers good at the Third and Curry Farmers Market, residency and income restrictions apply. Join Mo’z Motley Blues on the lawn of the Dangberg Home Historic Ranch for a summer twilight concert – bring a chair or blanket, I suggest some bug spray and a picnic, as well.

THURSDAY:

The Carson City Public Works Department is holding an open house on July 15th, from 10 am to 2 pm. Come join the men and women who help keep your city running daily with clean water, sewer service, streets, utility billing, the Jump Around Carson (JAC) bus system, landfill, city vehicle fleet maintenance, flood mitigation and storm drain services. Bring the whole family to a unique event, with tons of big construction equipment to see up close and climb on, a fun duck race, informative displays, lots of cool, free give-aways, and yummy eats from The Lazy Hog food truck.

Since 1924, Toastmasters International has helped people of all backgrounds become more confident in front of an audience. However, there are still many people unaware of Toastmasters, or what they do exactly.

I love the summer solstice - longest day of sunshine all year. Celebrate the first day of summer with a hike up to our waterfalls; the guided Muscle Powered hike this evening will show you the way. Load up the kids and take a short drive to Silver City; all summer they offer educational fun stuff like today's 'mining for chocolate' activity. It's a night of 1000 Dad Jokes at the Brewery Arts Center where funny and punny run smack-dab into silly - laughter is the best family activity.

The weekend hasn’t even started, and I’m already exhausted just trying to decide what to do first! Live music, races, activities, and much more await you downtown as part of the Carson City Off-Road. Stewart Indian School is awash in bright colors, beadwork, and dancers from all across the country during their annual Fathers’ Day Pow Wow. Visitors from throughout the region stopped in at the Carson City Municipal Airport Saturday to see vintage aircraft at the annual Fly-In Open House.

Planes, trains, and automobiles take over Carson City this weekend. Steampunk ‘N’ Trains at the Nevada Railroad Museum features train rides, fun costumes, food trucks and more. You’ll find two car shows in town – the Party at the Pavilion as part of the Nevada State Fair and the Carson City Downtown Revival Car Show at the Carson Nugget. Attention all aircraft enthusiasts: The Carson City Airport will hold is annual Open House this Saturday, June 10 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This free event, which draws more than 6,000 visitors, takes place at the Carson City Airport, 2600 College Parkway.

It’s all aboard for train lovers: the V&T begins its runs to Virginia City this weekend and the historic Glenbrook Engine is all steamed up at the Railroad Museum. The safest street party in Carson City, the 2017 Cops and Kids Open House, is this Saturday, May 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of the Carson City Sheriff's Office, 911 East Musser Street.

We’ve reached the mid-point of May, which puts summer just around the corner. I suspect there are plenty of students, and teachers too, that are counting down the days. The Carson High HOSA team is headed to their National Conference soon, and lunch or dinner at Chili’s will help get them there, just mention fundraiser to the server. We also have a T-Shirt fundraiser today at Firehouse Subs and Battle Born Ammunition & Firearms, LLC. The fundraiser is for Makayla Warner who is battling a rare kidney disease.

Family events are the highlight of Mother's Day weekend in Carson City as the Nevada state capital adds motherhood to its continuing celebration of spring.

This weekend is for all of the moms out there, and the dads that are also moms, and the women who hold a special place of honor in our hearts. Scoop the family up and find something to enjoy together. The annual RSVP Spring Carnival is an easy choice, but a round-trip to Virginia City on the historic V and T Steam Train is pretty memorable. Find something pretty for her garden at the Spring Plant Sale that the Greenhouse Project hosts each year. The annual spring breakfast and open house at Silver Saddle Ranch is this Saturday. The public is invited. A birdwalk starts the day at 7 a.m., breakfast is served at 9.

Sweethearts of the Sierra will provide music and trails will be open. Muscle Powered will be biking many of the trails and it is a great opportunity to visit the historic Red House.
