Jacqueline Milagros Acosta-Bruno was born Nov. 17, 2002 at Washoe Medical Center in Reno, Nev., to Claudia Bruno and Hector Acosta. She has four younger brothers and sisters, all attending Carson City Schools, as well as a sibling just 18-months-old.

Through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, Carson City was able to purchase personal protective equipment, including sanitizer, disposable gloves and masks, hand sanitizer, sanitizer stands, and cleaning solution in order to create a stock of supplies for Carson City businesses.

For the week ending January 2, initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 8,461, up 1,252 claims, or 17.4 percent, compared to the previous week’s total of 7,209 claims, according to data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR).

Since the week ending March 14, 2020, the first week Nevada saw claims increase due the pandemic, there have been a total of 794,227 initial claims filed.

Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak announced Tuesday his second State of the State address will air at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and current surge, the State of the State will be pre-recorded and aired to avoid an increased risk of spread.

CARSON CITY — Nevada artists who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic may apply through Jan. 29, 2021, for a $1,000 grant to be used to alleviate financial pressures due to COVID-19. Properly completed applications for the Fiscal Year 2021 Artist Relief Grant program will be entered into a process for randomized selection. If application requests exceed funding available, the Nevada Arts Council will prioritize geographic diversity and underserved populations.

On Friday, March 13, as the state prepared to shut down, the fate of many four-legged, feathered and scaled residents hung in the balance.

Greg Hall, CEO of the Nevada Humane Society, which has a presence in Reno and Carson City, organized a late-night emergency call with staff. They discussed how to operate amid the threat of COVID-19, a potentially lethal virus that carried so many unknowns. Meanwhile, seven hours south, staff at The Animal Foundation in Las Vegas braced for the worst.

As the new year kicks off and another COVID-19 stimulus package has been passed, University of Nevada, Reno Extension will offer free online town halls and webinars next week and the following week to provide small businesses owners with details on the stimulus package, as well as guidance on marketing and taxes.
