Storm continues to make travel difficult through Northern Nevada and Sierra

The Nevada Highway Patrol remains busy today attending to a number of weather-related accidents between Carson City and Reno, Trooper Chuck Allen reports.

With a winter storm warning in effect until 4 p.m. today followed by a blast of cold weather through Wednesday, conditions on Northern Nevada roads remain icy and will likely continue that way through the holiday travel period.

A book signing by former Nevada Appeal and Tahoe Daily Tribune sports reporter Jeremy Evans will be on Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Borders Books in Carson City. Evans is the author of the new book "In Search of Powder: A Story of America's Disappearing Ski Bum."

Midget football Snow Bowl fundraiser

The Carson City Pop Warner Jr. Midget Team recently won the 2010 Snow Bowl and are going on to regionals in Santa Clara, CA Thanksgiving Weekend and then possible on to the national level. The team is currently trying to raise fund to be able to travel to compete at the higher levels. There will be a fundraiser Monday, November 22nd at the Dairy Queen on Highway 50 East in Carson from 6 pm-9pm. Also monetary donations can be made. LOCAL SCOUTING DELIVERS FOR THE HOLIDAYS

DAYTON, NV – Pack 100 of Dayton Nevada collected several hundred pounds of food for the Dayton Food Pantry during their annual Scouting for Food event this week.

The boys of Pack 100 spent two weeks canvassing the Dayton and Mark Twain neighborhoods door to door seeking donations.

BLM Christmas tree permits available beginning Nov. 8

Christmas tree cutting permits in select areas of Northern Nevada public lands will be available beginning Monday, Nov. 8, the Bureau of Land Management Carson City District Office announced Thursday.

The agency allows Christmas tree sales to thin small trees in overstocked areas. Organizations and individuals are permitted to harvest trees for resale.

Shade Tree Council Will Hold Annual Fall Tree Care Seminar

For the 19th consecutive year, the Carson City Shade Tree Council will host its annual Fall Tree Care Seminar on November 3, 2010. The Seminar will be held in the Sierra Room at the Community Center from 8:30 am until 4 pm and is open to all tree care professionals and tree lovers in the community. The Community Center is located at 851 East William Street in Carson City.

The Seminar will be broadcast on Carson City’s public access television stations.

Lands bill contains money for Kings Canyon, Carson River Canyon property

The Secretary of the Interior announced the approval of $90 million in funding for continued restoration at Lake Tahoe along with other park and trail projects in Nevada as part of the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act.

The funding includes money for the purchase by the Forest Service of the 13 acre Schulz property near the Kings Canyon Waterfall as well as funding up to 40 percent of the $1.6 million for the acquisition of the Bently, Carson River Canyon property. The balance of the funding and future management will be through the City’s Open Space Program.

Carson City Deputy Sheriff's Association opens account for officer stricken with cancer

The Carson City Deputy Sheriff’s Association has set up an account for Deputy Kip Lee who has recently been diagnosed with myeloma, a type of bone cancer. Deputy Lee will be seeking treatment at a cancer center in Utah for three months.

Deputy Lee, a married father of three, has been a law officer in Carson City for more than five years.

Safety urged for hunters as marijuana grows increasingly found on Nevada public lands

After a summer that netted 15,000 marijuana plants on public lands that extended over four Nevada counties, the state's Department of Public Safety urges caution as hunters head for the woods and secluded places this fall.

Marijuana grows and other illegal enterprises are being encountered on public lands with increasing frequency, according to the department.

NV Energy slashes electric prices for Northern Nevada customers

Here's some good news for those who've come to expect bad news: Beginning today NV Energy will slash its overall electric rates by 6.73 percent for Northern Nevada customers.

With the adjustment, electric rates will have dropped nearly 19 percent since January 2009, company officials say, bringing the rollback electric prices to 2005 levels.

Power outage shuts off traffic lights on South Carson

Update 6:30 — Traffic lights on South Carson from Koontz Lane to Old Clear Creek Road were out for a couple of hours this afternoon due to a power outage.

We have confirmed that power was restored to the area at about 6:15, and all traffic lights are working now.

Carson City man hawks sister's wedding ring, buys smokes

Carson City authorities arrested an unemployed man who admitted to stealing his sister's wedding ring, pawning it at a shop and then used some of the money to buy cigarettes.

Gregory Lee Snelson, 30, of Carson City, faces a felony grand larceny charge. He is being held on $25,000 bail.

According to the arrest report, officers met the sister of Snelson at the Carson City Sheriff's Office. The woman told authorities that her wedding ring was missing from her room on Monday and said she and her husband searched the home but couldn't find it.

Carson City man admits to stealing purse from casino and $30,000 in cash and jewelry from parents

A Carson City man faces two felony grand larceny charges after admitting to detectives that he stole a purse from a casino and $30,000 in cash and jewelry from his parents.

Brian Christopher Ohl, 30, is being held on $25,000 bail.

Officers made the Sept. 7 arrest after a stolen purse report was made at a casino in the 1900 block of North Carson. Video surveillance footage identified Ohl as the man who took the purse, according to the arrest report.
