Nevada Legislature: Another dirty tale of sausage making

Last week, I wrote about how the pressures of the final hours of the Nevada Legislature result in lots of bad lawmaking. Today, Anjeanette Damon details some really odious bits of sausage making, including a measure to benefit NV Energy that could cost rate payers $1 billion.

This episode supports the contention that the 120-day session limit makes for very bad legislating. Limiting the number of days the Legislature meets does not limit the mischief that can cause. It simply gives the lobbyists and inside wheeler-dealers all the power, while shutting out the public.

Tahoe Bike Challenge, Car-Free Day a Success

Through late spring snow and cold temperatures, more than 300 people around Lake Tahoe rode in the 2011 Tahoe Bike Challenge, logging over 3,000 commuter bike or pedestrian trips and 10,000 miles of zero-emission travel. The Federal Highway Administration estimates that 1.9 pounds of CO2 is prevented by every bicycle mile traveled.

Nevada to recognize carry concealed weapons permits of 15 states

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Sheriffs’ and Chiefs’ Association members agreed at a meeting last month to recognize the carry concealed weapon permits of 15 states as being valid in Nevada beginning July 1.

The states agreed to at the May 5 meeting are: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island, Tennessee and West Virginia, according to a news release submitted by Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park extends tour schedule

This is a reminder that the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park is extending its tour schedule through June 30. After that date, Nevada State Parks will discontinue its operation of the park.

Nevada pre-existing condition insurance rates drop 37.5 percent

CARSON CITY, Nev. – Nevada Insurance Commissioner Brett Barratt is pleased to announce that starting July 1, 2011 rates for the high risk pool in Nevada, the federal Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan have been reduced by 37.5 percent by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

“This is great news for the thousands of uninsured Nevadans eligible for the PCIP,” said Commissioner Barratt. “These rate decreases make PCIP more affordable and comparable to the commercial market for individuals.”
