'In Search of Powder' book signing by author Jeremy Evans at Borders in Carson City
A book signing by former Nevada Appeal and Tahoe Daily Tribune sports reporter Jeremy Evans will be on Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Borders Books in Carson City. Evans is the author of the new book "In Search of Powder: A Story of America's Disappearing Ski Bum."
"In Search of Powder" follows the eight-year newspaper career of Evans, a sports writer who got his start at the Appeal and the Tribune. His sports and outdoors writing in the Lake Tahoe area garnered him numerous awards from the California Newspaper Publishers Association and Nevada Press Association.
The book chronicles the author's pursuit of skiing and snowboarding and the dynamic changes in the ski industry over the past 20 years.
Evans became immersed in ski bum culture — a carefree lifestyle whose mantra was simply: “Ski as much as possible.” After leaving the Appeal, Evans took a newspaper job in Portland. However his life was dramatically altered after suffering a stroke at the age of 26. It was then that he began re-examine his priorities and began research on "In Search of Powder." Evans quit his job, moved back to Tahoe, and threw himself into snowboarding. But while he had been away, the culture had changed. The book is Evans’s paean to the disappearing culture of the ski bum.
Evans looks at several prominent ski towns in the West (including Crested Butte, Jackson Hole, Telluride, Lake Tahoe, Park City, and Mammoth) and the ski bums who either flourished or fled. He chronicles the American West transformed by rising real estate costs, an immigrant workforce, misguided values, and corporate-owned resorts. The story he tells is that of quintessentially American characters — rejecting materialism, taking risks, following their own path — and of the glories and pitfalls their lifestyle presents.
