Alaska Airlines to offer service between Reno and San Jose beginning in June

Beginning in June, two flights will be offered from Reno-Tahoe International Airport to San Jose International Airport via Alaska Airlines.
The new service is also tied to flights to Hawaii from Reno offered through Alaska Airlines.

Wonders Soccer Academy from Carson City is collecting old cell phones and ink cartridges through January 30, 2012 for the purpose of team fundraising and help meet the needs of the players. Wonders Soccer will receive money for each item collected during the fundraiser. The items will be turned in to a company that specializes in recycling and refurbishing used technology.

UNR to offer renewable energy, public policy certification

RENO, Nev. – An online graduate certificate in renewable energy that provides an opportunity to study the policies and practices in the diverse fields of renewable energy is being offered at the University of Nevada, Reno beginning in the spring 2012 semester.

“With an emphasis on renewable energy by the Governor’s Task Force on Economic Development, this should be a popular program,” Nancy LaTourrette, of the University’s College of Engineering, said. “The program provides a breadth of understanding of the different aspects of renewable energy in a traditional semester-long time frame.”

Investigation Results in 8 Arrests for Distributing Methamphetamine in Northern Nevada

JAN 4 - (RENO, NV) – A four month investigation by the Northern Nevada Drug Task Force (NNDTF) has led to the arrest of 8 individuals accused of operating a drug trafficking organization responsible for the regular distribution of methamphetamine in Northern Nevada.

In August of 2011, NNDTF Task Force Officers and Agents initiated an investigation into a mid-level group of suspected methamphetamine dealers suspected of delivering and distributing multiple pounds of methamphetamine throughout the Reno/Sparks area on a monthly basis.

Nevada Motor Vehicle Fatalities Drop in 2011

Nevada traffic fatalities dropped in 2011 to 243.

Preliminary numbers show that 243 fatalities occurred on Nevada roads in 2011. This compares to 257 Nevada traffic deaths in 2010.

The reduced fatalities follow a general trend of traffic deaths dropping from an all-time high of 432 in 2006 to 243 in 2011.

I have never seen demand so high and donations so low.

We have had a 35% increase on requests from families this year.
Ron Wood Family Resource Center has been the Toys for Tots coordinating agency for 8 years and I have been Coordinator for 5 years.

We have been low on toys before ... but never like this.

BLM invites public comment on fiber optic project

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Sierra Front Field Office (SFFO) has made available for public review and comment the Nevada Broadband Telemedicine Initiative Environmental Assessment (EA).
The fiber optic cable project would connect, maintain and operate a statewide telemedicine network and would serve a minimum of 36 hospitals and medical facilities, with additional capacity available to serve public safety entities, educational institutions, and Tribal governments.
The comment period will close January 4, 2012.

Public Utilities Commission asks NV Energy to submit ‘opt-out’ proposals for smart meters

Following last week’s workshop to discuss issues and concerns related to Smart Meter deployment, the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada has asked NV Energy to submit proposals allowing ratepayers to opt-out of Smart Meter installation.

NV Energy must file its opt-out proposal by noon Wednesday, Dec. 28. People may file written reply comments by noon Friday, Jan. 13.

Ride the train with Santa at Nevada State Railroad Museum

The Nevada State Railroad Museum, located on 2180 S. Carson Street in Carson City, will offer train rides with Santa from 9am to 4 pm December 10th -11th and 17th- 18th, 2011.

Train rides are available for $6 per seat and will depart approximately every 25 minutes from 9:00am-4:00pm. Santa will be on board and visit all the children. Hot chocolate, food and refreshments will also be available provided by Warren Engine Company #1.
