Third bear hunting season in Nevada underway

Nevada's third bear hunting season began on Sunday, and once again, it's being met with some controversy.

Nevada Wildlife Commissioners approved the state's first bear hunt in 2010, and since then, groups like No Bear Hunt NV have been fighting with the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) to end the practice.

For one night only, an opportunity to see the movie “Trans” takes place in Carson City on Monday, September 16 at 5:30 p.m. at the Galaxy Theater, 4000 South Curry Street. Carson City sheriff warns of utility scammers calling customers

Southwest Gas and NV Energy customers are being targeted again by scammers calling and asking for personal information about their accounts and bills, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said.

Typically people are calling homes and businesses and identifying themselves as being with the utility company and asking for information about their power and in some cases, threatening to shut off the utility if a payment isn't made through a credit card or a cash transfer.

The job is simple: tell visitors why Carson Valley, Nev. is “Rugged. Relaxed. Reachable.” all while riding a horse. The Carson Valley Visitors Authority is looking for one horse savvy woman to become the “Carson Valley Rider.”

Sept. 4 consumer session in Carson City for proposed NV Energy rate hikes

A consumer session is set for Wednesday, Sept. 4, in Carson City to hear public comment regarding NV Energy’s application to the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada that would, if approved, hike Northern Nevada customer monthly service charges and rates by 1.8 percent for electric and 11.08 percent for gas.

NV Energy has filed an application with the commission to adjust general rates charged to all classes of electric and gas customers, according to a news release.

Carson City area air quality to fluctuate between 'very unhealthy' and 'unhealthy'

Air quality in Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County will likely straddle between "unhealthy" and "very unhealthy" conditions through at least the week, the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection reports.

Smoke and ash from the Rim Fire near Yosemite National Park is being pushed in the atmosphere directly over the region causing extremely elevated amounts of particulate matter. The levels of particulate matter equate to “Very Unhealthy” on the Air Quality Index (AQI) level of health concern, according to a news release.
