While I don’t work with test tubes or petri dishes, nor do I paint or sculpt, as a horticulturist, I am a scientist and an artist. Wreaths Across America came to Carson City's Lone Mountain Cemetery Saturday morning thanks to the Carson City Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol who organized the event locally.

The Nevada Board of Agriculture voted 8-1 Tuesday to hand over control of as many as 3,000 wild horses in the Virginia Range to a yet-to-be-determined non-profit group.

Holiday colors clashed Sunday afternoon at the Carson City Community Center gymnasium during the annual "Season's Beatings" Christmas roller derby scrimmage, this year benefiting local 501(c)3 non-profit Advocates to End Domestic Violence (AEDV).

The Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation is holding an Open House at the Wungnema House in Mills Park Sunday, Dec. 17 from 2 to 5 p.m.

Wreath's Across America is coming to Carson City's Lone Mountain Cemetery thanks to the Carson City Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol which is organizing the event locally. Each December, the national non-profit organization coordinates wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as more than 1,200 locations across the U.S., at sea and abroad.

Senior Projects, a Carson High School graduation requirement, are in full swing, and every year a host of new topics are set into motion by students who take it very seriously, students who take it upon themselves to make a difference in the lives of others. One such senior, Sarah Sever, is motivated to create awareness about a wide-ranging and ever growing atrocity affecting young women in America.

The Northern Nevada Honor Guard's shuttle bus requires essential repairs and we are seeking the public's help. The members of this unit are all veterans and part of the American Legion High Desert Post 56, Carson City. The unit provides, on average, 50-plus funerals and memorial services each year, is non-profit and all services are provided at no cost.

For many of us, our bowls are never empty. That cannot be said for those less fortunate who live paycheck to paycheck or live in the various motels filled with those who cannot afford permanent housing for their families.

Hoping to at least double the proceeds from last year's annual Pets of the Homeless fundraising campaign, a pair of Carson City businesses have teamed up for a third consecutive year in an effort to help the pets of homeless people across the United States.

Greenhouse management was not my career forte. My expertise is in ornamental plants and landscape design. Being involved with the non-profit The Greenhouse Project since its inception has given me a great opportunity to improve my understanding of how greenhouses work.

Some people do all of their holiday shopping on Black Friday. Others do their best to avoid shopping completely and spend the day after Thanksgiving relaxing at home. The tone of Black Friday can be equally mixed with retail businesses large and small.

UPDATE: Bruce's Legacy, the underwater search and recovery team from Wisconsin, was at Fallen Leaf Lake recently, searching the water for a missing person. What they found was more than expected when bodies of both a man and woman were recovered.
