Handful of Nevada Day venues switch up for statehood celebration in Carson City

The Beard Competition will move from the Legislative Plaza to the the parking lot of the old Citibank — 308 North Curry — during the celebration Oct. 31 in downtown Carson City.
Stewart Indian School Powwow features Native American culture

The Stewart Father's Day Powwow displayed outstanding dancers, traditional food and local vendors. The weekend long celebration began Friday and will continue until Sunday.

Hosted in partnership with the Nevada Indian Commission and the Stewart Father’s Day Powwow Committee, the annual powwow includes quality Native American arts and crafts vendors and is also a time for alumni, former employees, families and friends to gather at the former campus.

The Friends of the Carson City Library are hosting Rockin’ Rev. Ken Haskins and Carson City Pottery needs help getting ready for an Empty Bowls bowl making event. Dancing shoes are perfect for salsa dance lessons at El Charro’s, but you may want cowboy boots for line dance lessons at Beercade. Practice those newly learned dance moves at Living the Good Life: DJ Bobby G is featuring Latin music. Sing to your heart’s content at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar or at the Feisty Goat Pub: it’s karaoke night.

History and Future of Stewart Indian School Explored

Sesquicentennial Honoring Reception for the 1964 Centennial Indian Princesses

She won the crown in 1964 and when the state celebrates its 150th birthday, Callac-Jones will be here. She will travel from her home in Florida to join in the birthday celebration and the 2014 Sesquicentennial Honoring Reception for the 1964 Centennial Indian Princesses, co-hosted by the Nevada Indian Commission and the Reception Planning Committee.

These Nevada 150 events celebrate all things Nevada and help bring awareness to the 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following events are held Oct. 16 through 30. On Friday Oct. 17, come watch the Nevada 150 Pony Express Delivery, on the south steps of the Nevada State Capitol Building in Carson City at 3:30 p.m.

NAC Arts Learning, Project and Partners in Excellence grants for fiscal year 2015 went to non-profit organizations and public institutions in 10 Nevada counties. Grants were awarded at the board meeting in May. Review panels convened in public meetings to evaluate the grant applications and recommend funding amounts for the board to consider.

Nevada Arts Council brings arts visioning to Carson community

The Arts Council is launching a series of local arts town meetings to engage in conversations with Nevadans. Staff plans to explore the cultural needs of large and small communities, the role of the arts in the Silver State and to evaluate NAC’s role as a state agency.

UNR archeologist leads excavation at historic Stewart Indian School landmark in Carson City

The Stewart facility is a 110-acre historic district that is home to more than 50 historic buildings.
C-SPAN programs featuring Carson City to air this weekend

In addition to having feature stories sprinkled in throughout the weekend on the respective networks, both American History TV and Book TV, there will be a block of programming where all of the respective Carson City pieces for their networks will air, said C-SPAN spokeswoman Laura Finch.

This colorful exhibit, featured now through Aug. 7, was developed by the Folklife Program of the Nevada Arts Council and presents art and crafts that capture the vibrant spirit of the contemporary powwow, Nevada-style.

Carson City Freeway project awarded for archeological efforts

An Exemplary Human Environment Initiative award to NDOT was presented by the Federal Highway Administration for partnering efforts to enhance and preserve the historic cemetery as part of the Carson City Freeway project.
