CARSON CITY — Hundreds of American Indian dancers, drummers, artists, craftsmen and cultural enthusiasts will converge on Carson City June 15-17 for the annual Stewart Father’s Day Powwow, June 15-17.

CARSON CITY — History enthusiasts who missed November’s sold out Frances Humphrey Lecture on the future of Stewart Indian School have a second chance this Saturday, Jan. 20, at the Nevada State Museum.

Just one week to go until Thanksgiving. You’ll have from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. to drop off your donation to the Holiday for the Hungry Frozen Turkey Drop at the Carson Nugget; you’ll see the FISH truck on Carson Street and can drop it off without leaving your car. Sherry Rupert, Executive Director of the State of Nevada Indian Commission, is tonight’s speaker at the Nevada State Museum. Learn about the future of the Stewart Indian School, and probably some interesting things about its history. The Polar Express begins its seasonal run this weekend.

Four Nevadans will be honored on Saturday, Nov. 18, at the Governor’s Mansion in Carson City for their contributions to the American Indian community.

When Stewart Indian School was established in 1890 on the outskirts of Carson City, it was one of the first 25 of hundreds of boarding schools set up around the nation with a mission to assimilate American Indian children into mainstream culture.

Here is an updated parade list for all the entries in the Nevada Day Parade on Saturday. Note, there was a last-minute change in streets where the entries are supposed to line up that is different than the printed program. The change was made to accommodate some larger floats. The Nevada State Museum and the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City are offering free admission to patrons both Friday and Saturday in recognition of Nevada Day.

The presentation of “W is for Wungnema” was held Saturday, October 7th, at the Stewart Community Baptist Church in Carson City and was a huge success. There were approximately 125–150 guests in attendance and a good time was had by all who attended.

The children of Randall and Hope Posas-Wungnema cordially invite the public to join them on Saturday, Oct. 7 for the screening of “W is for Wungnema” a presentation detailing the family’s many and varied masonry projects throughout Northern Nevada and Northern California.

The Stewart Indian School Father's Day Powwow often stands out to attendees by the setting alone. “It’s a beautiful campus with multicolored stone buildings as well as the the grassy field,” said Sherry Rupert, executive director of the Nevada Indian Commission. “That’s a big attraction because most powwows are held in dirt or in parking lots.”

UNLV students taking part in the university’s Alternative Break Program will spend next week at Stewart Indian School in Carson City, completing landscaping and other projects, while also having the opportunity to learn about the historic site and Native American culture.

The Nevada Indian Commission will honor four Nevadans for their contributions to the American Indian community at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Governor’s Mansion in Carson City, at the American Indian Achievement Awards Banquet and Silent Auction, now in its seventh year.

For ninety years, Stewart Indian School fulfilled a federal commitment to pursue Native American education in Nevada. Located three miles southeast of Carson City, the school grounds encompassed 240 acres.

The Nevada Indian Commission in conjunction with the Bi-State Executive Oversight Committee launched an open open forum Tuesday to discuss the best practices for integrating traditional ecological knowledge into the management of sagebrush and pinyon-juniper ecosystems by federal land agencies.

The event is at the Stewart Indian School Gym in Carson City and runs through Thursday, June 30. Nearly 200 arrived Tuesday for the forum's first day.

The Stewart Father's Day Powwow Committee in partnership with the Nevada Indian Commission is hosting the 2016 Stewart Father's Day Powwow at the former Stewart Indian School in Carson City, which got underway Friday and continues through Saturday and Sunday.

As soon as John Rupert, 15, could walk, he started learning the traditional dances of his Native American forefathers.

“We have all my regalia in all different sizes,” said John, the son of a Washoe father and Paiute mother. “I think it’s cool. Not many people can say they go to powwows on the weekends.”

Hosted in partnership with the Nevada Indian Commission and the Stewart Indian School Alumni, the annual powwow includes quality Native American fun and is also a time for alumni, former employees, families and friends to gather at the former campus.

CARSON CITY — For 36 years, the Stewart Indian School has been closed. Now, the Nevada Indian Commission is working to preserve its history and establish it as a cultural heritage destination.

With the Epic Rides Off-Road Series mountain biking race set for this summer, the Carson City Visitors Bureau can pump up the fat tire frenzy along with its promotion thanks in part to a $4,000 grant, among 65 approved for funding from the state’s rural tourism program, Nevada Lt. Gov. Mark Hutchison announced Wednesday.

Representing this year’s Nevada Day theme, “One state, many cultures,” Native American advocate Sherry Rupert and Old West actor Jack Waggon are sharing the title of grand marshal of this year’s parade.

Rupert — whose husband’s great-grandfather, Henry Moses Rupert, was the first American Indian grand marshal — will be the first female American Indian to marshal the 77th annual parade Saturday, 10 a.m. in downtown Carson City.
