History and Future of Stewart Indian School Explored
On Wednesday, May 20, Sherry Rupert, Executive Director of the State of Nevada Indian Commission, will speak in the Carson Nugget Ballroom to the Carson City Leisure Hour Club. Ms. Rupert will review the history of the Stewart Indian School and share insights into future plans for the historic site.
The Stewart Indian School (1890-1980) was an American Indian school and was a part of the Native American boarding schools project. The school was named for Nevada's first senator, William M. Stewart and opened on December 17, 1890. It has also been known as Stewart Institute, Carson Industrial School, and Carson Indian School. The school opened with 37 students from Washoe, Paiute and Shoshone tribes and was staffed by 3 teachers. Students were taught basic educational classes but focused on vocational skills such as agriculture, ranching and carpentry.
Sherry Rupert is the Executive Director of the State of Nevada Indian Commission, appointed by Governor Kenny Guinn in September of 2005. On October 10, 2013, Sherry was sworn in by Governor Brian Sandoval as the first American Indian woman to be appointed a member of his cabinet.
Ms. Rupert is an American Indian of Paiute and Washoe heritage. She is also a proud Native Nevadan, born in Carson City and raised on the Washoe Reservation in Gardnerville. Now residing in Carson City, she is a wife and mother of two, with her eldest son proudly serving in the United States Navy.
If you would like to attend this event, please call Dorothy Link at (775) 885-2542 no later than Thursday, May 14 to make your reservation. The meeting is preceded by a buffet dinner at 6:30 in the Carson Nugget Capitol Ballroom. Reservations for dinner are required.
The Leisure Hour Club, established in September of 1896, is Carson City’s oldest continuously operating social organization. Now celebrating its 118th year, the organization continues to focus on its goal of promoting knowledge on important issues, science, music and literature.
