Last weekend the cyclists ruled our city, but now the hot-rodders are king of the road. The Rockabilly Riot is jam-packed with activities all over town: the races and booths at Mills Park; a street dance at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar; a tattoo show in the Community Center; a free concert at Gold Dust West; and Burlesque at the Nugget. Don’t think that’s all our valley has to offer, though, keep reading for all this weekend’s fun.

SATURDAY:

It usually happens once a year — a big, community wide, fee-waived pet adoption event. The goal? To get a large number of animals into loving homes all at one time while freeing up much needed space in the shelters.

Cafe at Adele’s in Carson City presented the Nevada Humane Society a check for $2,000 Friday from the May 26 Bone Appetit fundraiser at the restaurant.

Adele’s owners Karen and Charlie Abowd made the donation, which was 25 percent of the restaurant’s total sales for the all-day event. It was Cafe at Adele’s first fundraiser for Nevada Humane Society.

Wanted: A family, made up of one human or several, who will provide unconditional love, support and care, as well as a comfy bed, toys, yummy treats and unlimited belly rubs and the occasional long walk on the beach.

"I’m Alexia. I’m an Angel Pet.” This statement is just the beginning of a special adoption campaign at Nevada Humane Society in Carson City.

Featuring nearly two dozen cats and dogs with unique conditions, Angel Pets highlight those who are in need of a loving home even more than anyone else — and from June 2 through June 12, you can visit with these precious pets and fall in love yourself, thanks to a grant provided by the ASPCA.*

Midnight Madness has descended upon the valley, bringing with it a 72 hour softball tournament at Centennial Park. Don’t be surprised to see more cyclists on the road: an unofficial pre-ride for Epic Rides is this weekend. Head to the Nevada State Railroad Museum to see the Glenbrook all steamed up. Campfires and bar-be-ques are just around the corner: Memorial Day weekend is almost here. Get a jump on the fun with some live music at Living the Good Life or Glen Eagles. Learn something new with Dr. Hattori at the Nevada State Museum. An improv workshop at the Brewery Arts Center will get your creative juices flowing. The Capitol Amphitheater is where you’ll enjoy a new spin on the Taming of the Shrew, performed by the Carson High Theater Arts Department. Don’t forget a doggie-bag after a meal at Adele’s today: the Bone Appetit fundraiser for the Nevada Humane Society goes on all day.

Nevada Humane Society’s Bone Appetit program is combining great local restaurants with a great cause — offering dining out as a way to give back to homeless pets. On Thursday, May 26, Café at Adele’s is raising money and awareness for Nevada Humane Society and you can dine with them to participate!

Residents in Carson City now have an option for spaying and neutering feral cats. A mobile veterinary clinic, specially designed for spay/neuter services, was recently built for Nevada Humane Society thanks to a grant which covered the cost of the vehicle.

You can probably take ‘beach day’ off of your agenda. Spring has been briefly usurped by a blustery chill. Grab a coat and hit the town anyway. Catmandu has closed the gates and is not taking in any more cats or kittens at this time. Unless Carson City and the surrounding communities open their wallets and start providing support, the facility will likely not re-open.

Forgive me in advance because this is extremely personal but I felt it was something all of us can relate to. So many amazing people adopt senior pets from Nevada Humane Society, and we all know that many of them live long into their teens. Some of us raise them as newborns with them by our side for years. Inevitably, the end will always come, but my recent struggle was how do you know when to say goodbye?

Picture this. A group of male prisoners (big, burly guys) and a group of tiny, tabby kittens (weighing about three ounces), meeting each other for the first time at the Warm Springs Correctional Center. It’s early evening, the sun is setting and everyone is settling in for the night. It’s calm and quiet.

Suddenly the men are alert, turning all warm and fuzzy, cooing and using baby talk — they are melting at the sight of newborn kittens. Don’t judge, you would react this way too.

Last week we began the lifesaving adventure of Carson, a handsome, young tabby cat who was hit by a car in Carson City.

His injuries were severe — bruising and scrapes all over the body, a broken jaw and two broken front legs. We fixed up his jaw here at our Nevada Humane Society veterinary clinic and then sent him to a local specialist—Sierra Veterinary Specialists. We told you his outcome was good, but we left you hanging for the next step of his adventure. Well, wait no more.

Feeling spicy? The weekend is almost here, so step out of your normal routine and try salsa lessons at El Charro Avita. If you’re in the mood to lounge and relax, crooner Jimmy Clifton at Living the Good Life pairs nicely with a martini. Red’s Old 395 has an incredible happy hour with half off draft beers today and a yummy menu. Rack ‘em up at Remedy’s free pool night. America’s favorite past time returns as the Reno Aces host opening night; someone buy me some Cracker Jack.

THURSDAY:

What to do on a Wednesday? The answer is surprising: Karaoke at Crossroads, Country Line Dance at Carson Lanes, cool jazz at Living the Good Life, and more. Catch an encore presentation of the Metropolitan Opera, Madama Butterfly, at Galaxy Theater. Or help Comma Coffee welcome the April artist on display in the Backseat Gallery. Don’t delay grabbing tickets for the Carson High Father-Daughter dance: it’s this Friday. All day long, a fundraiser for Maya Morrison is happening at Firkin and Fox, but head over between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to take advantage of their very first Whiskey Wednesday.

Happy Tuesday, Carson City. The Parks and Rec Easy Walk is something special today. A tour of our Historical west side will give you a new perspective on some of the neat old houses we have around downtown. If you get hungry, it’s hard to go wrong with all you can eat wings at Firkin and Fox; they’ve set up new patio seating on the south side while their Third Street patio gets rebuilt. Lunch or dinner at Chili’s will help the homeless pets that Nevada Humane Society serves.

TUESDAY:

Monday has returned, the kids head back to school, and the weather is gorgeous. Add a dose of beautiful to your day with a visit to an art Gallery. You’ll find a new exhibit in the Main Gallery at Western Nevada College. Carson City officials will be on hand today at the Community Center to answer questions and explain what is on the budget for the upcoming fiscal year. While you’re there, take a good gander at the Great Basin Native Artists show on display in the Sierra Room.

MONDAY:

Lifesaving at Nevada Humane Society doesn’t stop; in fact, more often than not, multiple animals are in need of special surgeries all at the same time. Recently, Donner the puppy made headlines and is currently recovering from surgery. Today, Carson the cat is beginning his journey, and, just like Donner’s did, it begins with a rough start.

The PUPS up for Parole will be parading through Virginia City this weekend in celebration of Easter. Join Nevada Humane Society and their adoptable dogs as they step into spring with the Easter Bonnet and Pet Parade Saturday, March 26 at 12 noon.

If you’re a dog lover (like many of us), consider your plans made for this Saturday, March 12. We’re so thrilled for Fido Fest, a fabulous doggie extravaganza! This brand new event features everything for the dog lover (and pet lover) by bringing together local businesses and adoptable dogs for one big celebration this Saturday, March 12, hosted by and at The Summit in South Reno.

The fifth annual Nevada's Big Give charity drive will be held statewide on Thursday, March 10.

The Big Give is an online donation drive designed to raise as much money as possible in a 24-hour period for various statewide and local charities.

The statistics are counted and Nevada Humane Society is proud to announce that their first full year in Carson City had a big impact on lifesaving, making Nevada’s capital city the second region to become a no-kill community in Nevada.

Sunday fun includes the Carson Victory Roller’s My Bloody Valentine Scrimmage to benefit CASI and the Nevada Humane Society. Brides-to-be will want to check out the Fall in Love Bridal Festival at Genoa Lakes. Leave the kids at home for Nerdvana’s Adults Gaming Night: you must be 18 or older for this fun.

It’s official. My eyes have been opened to a whole new world — and the things I’ve learned will make a lifelong impact on me. Forgive me because this article will probably be all over the place as I try to find the words to describe one very unique experience.
