Nevada Humane Society, Regional Animal Service: Keep pets safe during July 4 fireworks

Every year, shelters across the country see a sharp increase in stray animals during the 24-hour period around July 4 and 5 as noisy fireworks frighten many animals.

I Love Carson City's Weekend Event Summary: June 25-26

Event Date:
June 25, 2016 (All day)

Last weekend the cyclists ruled our city, but now the hot-rodders are king of the road. The Rockabilly Riot is jam-packed with activities all over town: the races and booths at Mills Park; a street dance at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar; a tattoo show in the Community Center; a free concert at Gold Dust West; and Burlesque at the Nugget. Don’t think that’s all our valley has to offer, though, keep reading for all this weekend’s fun.

SATURDAY:

Nevada Humane Society free adoptions pair people and pets together this weekend

It usually happens once a year — a big, community wide, fee-waived pet adoption event. The goal? To get a large number of animals into loving homes all at one time while freeing up much needed space in the shelters.

How do you know when to say goodbye? Nevada Humane Society manager shares her story

Forgive me in advance because this is extremely personal but I felt it was something all of us can relate to. So many amazing people adopt senior pets from Nevada Humane Society, and we all know that many of them live long into their teens. Some of us raise them as newborns with them by our side for years. Inevitably, the end will always come, but my recent struggle was how do you know when to say goodbye?

Nevada Humane Society program provides inmates with motherless kittens

Picture this. A group of male prisoners (big, burly guys) and a group of tiny, tabby kittens (weighing about three ounces), meeting each other for the first time at the Warm Springs Correctional Center. It’s early evening, the sun is setting and everyone is settling in for the night. It’s calm and quiet.

Suddenly the men are alert, turning all warm and fuzzy, cooing and using baby talk — they are melting at the sight of newborn kittens. Don’t judge, you would react this way too.

Nevada Humane Society update on Carson the Cat: Lifesaving journey continues

Last week we began the lifesaving adventure of Carson, a handsome, young tabby cat who was hit by a car in Carson City.

His injuries were severe — bruising and scrapes all over the body, a broken jaw and two broken front legs. We fixed up his jaw here at our Nevada Humane Society veterinary clinic and then sent him to a local specialist—Sierra Veterinary Specialists. We told you his outcome was good, but we left you hanging for the next step of his adventure. Well, wait no more.
