Wild weather weekend around Carson City

National Weather Service storm totals around Carson City and Carson Valley are impressive. After months of being without rain, Mother Nature chose Sunday to spring open the clouds and pour down the buckets after a week’s worth of near record-high temperatures, thunderstorms, lightning strikes, power outages, gusty winds and wildfires.

What Works: Are you being kind to yourself?

This weekend provided a lesson in self-kindness I will never forget. It started with a group hike at Upper Thomas Creek Trail.

Hiking with a group, I thought, would make the experience more enjoyable. Unfortunately, initially, it didn't. It wasn't because of the group. It was because of what went on in my head as a result. In an effort to try to keep up with more experienced hikers, I focused outside myself and pushed myself too hard to keep up.

Children's Museum offers Kids Clay Camp

Clay is a wonderful, tactile medium that many kids have never experienced before. Its three dimensional nature forces them to think about structure, shapes and forms.

At Kids Clay Camp they can experiment with a variety of building techniques while they learn to think about their ideas and adapt to change along the way.

There is something very magical about children when they are thinking and working creatively. Once children learn to express and execute their personal visions in clay, they can become empowered in ways that go far beyond the walls of the ceramic studio or classroom.

Column: Time To Be Positive

In a recent trip out of town, I found myself forced to face an ugly truth. I was beginning to let all the negativity in the news move my subconscious mind away from living in the positive side. As a cancer survivor, I can tell you that thinking negatively is bad for your body.

As a business owner, the key to the success of my business, and anybody else’s too, is what attitude we set for everybody who works with us. Just like our personal body, a negative attitude in our business is also bad for our business. If we have a great attitude, surprise, others seem to have one too.

Fire investigators say arsonist started four brush fires along Lake Tahoe hiking trails

Doug 'Mac the Naw' Busey's Lake Tahoe and Sierra area fishing report

Hello fellow anglers, winter came back and stirred up the fishing. I now think that is behind us, for at least a week or so. This time of year never trust Mother Nature and always be prepared. I have been caught off guard back in the high country as well as an overnighter at Indian Creek Reservoir.

What Works: Rolling with the cycles of life and business

If you haven’t noticed by now, I love quotes. This weekend, I ran across this one by Walt Whitman. “Every moment of light and dark is a miracle.” It reminds me that life is cyclical and when the low cycles hit, we need to ask ourselves what we can learn from them to move forward.

What Works: Beating the post-vacation blues

Memorial Day came and went a couple of weekends ago and, although I was sick during the holiday, many others were thankfully healthy. Some used the opportunity for a three-day weekend to go get a little R&R in: go to the beach, take a break, spend time with friends and family, and unwind. It’s what happens on Tuesday, after we come back to the reality of our lives, businesses, ups and downs, that can be confusing — the post-vacation blues.
