These soldiers were all children once…they stood in that first pair of shoes, released supports, leaned into the wind of unknowing, wobbled that first step toward war.” Literary work by Breeden and other Nevada writers accompany photographs of the nearly 7,000 U.S military Iraq and Afghanistan war dead since Sept.11, 2001, all part of the nationally touring arts and humanities exhibition “Always Lost: A Meditation on War.”

Her illustrated talk, Bringing the World to Northern Nevada is the next in CCAI’s Nevada Neighbors series. The talk will take place at 7pm at the BRIC, 108 E Proctor St, Carson City.
There will be an informal reception for Ms. Northrup preceding the event; the doors open at 6:15pm. The presentation and reception are free, and the public is cordially invited.
'Pipe Makers of the Great Basin' video shows 100-year-old’s American Indian craft

In a quietly reflective video, Tobey shows an apprentice how his pieces take shape and inspiration for use in traditional ceremonies. A Nevada Arts Council grant helped create “Pipe Makers of the Great Basin.” The film premiered in February and is now online at nac.nevadaculture.org under Nevada Stories.
Carson Chamber Singers spring concerts are Saturday in Carson City, Sunday in Reno

Old-time radio drama meets 21st-century hip graphic novel on stage at UNR

It’s a whole lot bigger than that now: Enter a sound-effects genius, an emotion-wielding keyboardist, three actors voicing tons of wacky characters, with 1,200 vintage-cool illustrations projected over the stage, all telling the story like a 1930s radio play with decidedly 21st-century spins.

International film weekend takes root in Carson City; Independent films with local ties to screen free at WNC

Last year’s event was a rousing success, paving the way for this year’s larger festival.
The Carson City Community Center and Western Nevada College will be venues for viewing three foreign feature-length films, three independently produced films, and several Brewery Arts Center contest-winning short films.

Capital City Arts Initiative Awarded Warhol Foundation Grant

It has received a $50,000 grant from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
The Foundation awarded the organization the grant for two years of program support through 2016.
Courthouse Gallery in Carson City, St. Mary's in Virginia City make list of must-see Nevada art stops

In announcing its list the website notes Nevada is dotted with many places for art lovers to explore, including traditional galleries to more unique spaces. From Reno to Elko the state boasts a wide range of art from a host of talented individuals, including locals and international artists.
Capital City Arts Initiative Awarded National Endowment for the Arts Grant

CCAI is recommended for a $10,000 grant to support an exhibition by artist Katie Lewis in the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. Ms. Lewis’ show will open in September 2015.
Reno Jazz Orchestra Presents Jazz for the Holidays

The first concert will be on Friday, Dec. 5, at 7:30 p.m., at Trinity Episcopal Church, 200 Island Ave. in Reno.
The program will be repeated in Sacramento on Sunday, December 7, at 7 p.m., at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 2391 St. Marks Way. For the Sunday concert, the St. Mark's Chancel Choir and the St. Mark's Singers will join in performance with the Carson Chamber Singers.

In honor of veterans, the band will play "Bugle Call Rag," "American Patrol," and "In the Mood." The concert includes the Carson City Symphony Chorus directed by Michael Langham, and featured guest artists McAvoy Layne as Mark Twain, poet Shaun Griffin, Native American singer Christina Thomas, and readers Rita Geil and Christina Van Geel. The program begins at 4 p.m.
Registration open as Poetry Out Loud celebrates 10th Anniversary

Historic radio series that chronicles Nevada folklife now online for Nevada 150 celebration
Submitted by editor on Wed, 09/24/2014 - 9:09amNearly 30 years ago, the Nevada Arts Council and its partners created a radio series that would chronicle the fabric of Nevada folk heritage from experts in local arts that include bit and spur making, the language of gaming, neon glass blowing, cradleboarding and more. In celebration of the state’s 150th birthday, the full 13-episode series “Home Means Nevada 1986: Folklife in the Silver State” has been digitized.
