CARSON CITY — Since the early 1980s, May has been a month for celebrating historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada. Nevada agencies and organizations have worked hard to spread awareness of archaeological and historic preservation efforts throughout the Silver State, encouraging both residents and visitors to explore and learn about Nevada’s significant archaeological and historical treasures.

The Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, will feature pianist Alexander Tutunov on Sunday, April 29, 2018, at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater. Dr. Tutunov will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3.

Carson City Symphony's Youth Strings ensembles and Not Quite Ready For Carnegie Hall Players adult intermediate string ensemble will perform a "Music is for Life (goes to the movies)" concert on Thursday, April 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, located at 851 East William Street in Carson City.

Carson City’s Big Read Event featuring “True Grit” will kick off May 3 with an exhibit at Western Nevada College displaying artwork made from canceled playing cards from area casinos.

Consort Canzona Early Music Instrumental Ensemble and the Joyful Noise Carson Children’s Choir will perform a free concert on Saturday, April 21, 7 p.m., at Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church, 3680 Highway 395 (just south of Best Buy). Admission is free, donations welcome.

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, "High School Pic(ks) 2018" at the Community Development Building, also known as the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City.

Thirty-two artists from Carson, Dayton, Douglas, and Pioneer high schools have work in the exhibit. CCAI will host a reception for the artists on Tuesday, April 24, 5 – 7pm. The free exhibition is available to the public from April 15 – July 9, 2018, Mondays - Fridays, 8am – noon and 1-4pm.

Join the celebration! For 17 years, Mile High Jazz Band has been performing monthly jazz performances in Carson City. Celebrate this milestone on Tuesday, April 10, at 7:30 p.m. Hear sensational big-band music with vocalist June Joplin at Living the Good Life Bistro, 1480 N. Carson Street in Carson City. Admission is free, donations welcome.

The Mile High Jazz Band with vocalist June Joplin will be joined by several poets and readers on Tuesday, March 13, 2018, 7:30-9:30 p.m., for an evening of big-band music and poetry on the theme "Springboards."

Yerington High School senior Grey Hunt has become accustomed to hearing her name called at the Nevada Poetry Out Loud State Finals, but the two-time defending state winner admitted to being a nervous after three rounds on Saturday.

On Wednesday, March 14, the Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) will present a talk by Carson City’s Arts & Culture Director Mark Salinas.

His illustrated talk, "Choices, Chances, and Changes," is part of CCAI’s ongoing Nevada Neighbors series and will take place at 6 p.m. at the Union restaurant, 302 W. Proctor St in Carson City.

There will be an informal reception for Salinas preceding the event at 5:30 p.m. No tickets needed; the public is cordially invited.

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, "Works: Some Water Some Welded," with artwork by artists Susan Glaser Church and Stephen Reid at the city’s Sierra Room located in the Community Center, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition is available to the public from March 2 – June 30, 2018. CCAI will host a reception for the artists on Friday, March 2, 5-7pm in the Sierra Room.

Nine high school students from around the state will take center stage at the 13th annual Nevada Poetry Out Loud State Finals, Saturday, March 3.

The Carson City Symphony Association presents “Music by Cellist-Composers,” an elegant evening of music, conversation, wine, and dessert on Friday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m.

Tonight, Tuesday, Feb. 13, the Capital City Arts Initiative will present a talk by author and long-time film reviewer, Robin Holabird. Her illustrated talk, Elvis, Marilyn, and the Space Aliens: Nevada Screen Icons, is part of CCAI’s ongoing Nevada Neighbors series and will take place at 6 p.m. at the Community Development building, the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City.

The Carson City Symphony Association will hold its Artist-in-Residence Workshop and Masterclass on Thursday, Feb. 22 from 6 to 8 p.m., in the band room at Carson High School, located at 1111 N. Saliman Road.

The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "Writing from Mars," by artist Rick Parsons at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. CCAI will host a reception for the artist on Friday, February 2, 5-7pm. The exhibit will be in the gallery from February 2 – May 23, 2018.

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, "ART from WNC," at the Community Development Building (the Brick) 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Eleven student artists from Western Nevada College, Carson City, have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public now through April 12, 2018; the building is open Monday - Friday, 8am – noon, 1-4pm.

"ART from WNC" includes a wide variety of art including graphic design, drawing, photography, and watercolor painting that show the diversity of the students’ creativity.

Carson City Symphony Association announces the Joyful Noise Carson Children’s Choir will begin Spring semester rehearsals on Monday, Jan. 22. The weekly sessions will be held onstage at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall through May.

Swing into the New Year with a Jazz Quintet from the Mile High Jazz Band at Comma Coffee on Tuesday, January 9, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street, is across the street from the state legislature building in Carson City. General admission is $5 at the door; free for age 18 and under.

String players of all ages and levels are invited to join the 10th annual Christmas Carol Playalong on Thursday, Dec. 21, 2017, from 4 to 5 p.m.. inside Carson Mall, 1313 S. Carson Street, Carson City. This free event is hosted by Carson City Symphony Association and Carson Mall.

The spirit of Christmas comes to life as the 17-piece Reno Jazz Orchestra and the Pat Esters Gospel Choir blends Christmas favorites, jazz, and soul - with a few surprises mixed in – for three performances of feel good, ‘get ready for the holidays’ music and song. The Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra will perform as well.

“Peanutcracker – The Story In A Nutshell,” is a kid-sized version of the holiday classic, “The Nutcracker,” told in 45-minutes by 50 local school school children. Performed by Sierra Nevada Ballet, there will be performances Friday and Saturday at the Carson City Community Center.

The Capital City Arts Initiative [CCAI] announces its faculty exhibition, "Inspirations", at the Community Development Building [the Brick], 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. The Brick is open to the public daily, 8am – noon, 1-4pm. The exhibition will remain in the building’s lobby exhibition space from October 23, 2017 through January 11, 2018. CCAI will host a reception for the artists on Wednesday, November 15, 5-7pm in the Brick.

Attention singers! The Carson City Symphony Chorus will begin rehearsals on Tuesday, Oct. 31, for the December 10 Holiday Treat concert with the Carson City Symphony. Rehearsals are Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. at the Choral Room in Carson High School, 1111 N. Saliman Road in Carson City.
