Unclaimed remains of 27 veterans to receive a military funeral in Fernley

The service will be held beginning at 2 p.m. at the Northern Nevada State Veterans Cemetery, located at 14 Veterans Way, in Fernley, Nev. The public is invited to attend.

Business Spotlight: Wild Horse Gallery expands to Carson City

"I had everything stacked up in the hallway where they could look through it," she said. "But most people don't look through it."
Most of the prints she carried were stacked on the floor because there wasn't the wall space to display them all.

Nevada's only military bagpiper passes the pipes to his daughter

He practiced at a Kuwaiti military base, while wearing his kilt, sporran, dress shoes and other traditional Highland dress. He remembers one particular day when a large group of U.S. Marines swarmed around him to listen. Normally, that's when he hears, "What's under your kilt, har har?"

US Navy accepts USNS Carson City at Friday ceremony in Alabama
Submitted by editor on Mon, 06/27/2016 - 12:57pmThe U.S. Navy on Friday accepted delivery of the seventh expeditionary fast transport USNS Carson City during a ceremony held aboard the ship at Austal USA’s shipyard in Mobile, Alabama.
EPF 7 is the second U.S. Navy ship named for the city in Nevada. The first Carson City was designated PF-50 and commissioned March 24, 1944. She was loaned to Japan in 1953 and served for nearly 20 years in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. Carson City received two battle stars for World War II service.
Marine unit to hold day, night-time air training exercises near Minden-Tahoe Airport
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 06/06/2016 - 2:15pmMarines and sailors from the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit at Camp Pendelton, Calif., are scheduled to conduct training in areas surrounding Minden-Tahoe Airport beginning Friday and running through June 24.
The unit will fly personnel and equipment in Marine aircraft to conduct training exercises in the adjacent areas. To ensure the training is realistic, some flights will occur after dark, increasing local air traffic.
Veterans, supporters march for suicide awareness
Submitted by Brett Fisher on Sat, 05/07/2016 - 12:06pmAngels' tears fell from heaven Saturday morning as dozens braved cool, wet conditions to participate in the second annual Veterans Suicide Awareness March, an event organized by the Western Nevada College Veterans Resource Center.
The march, a solemn one for those participating as well as anyone who has been affected by suicide, followed a 1.5-mile course from the Bully's parking lot at the corner of North Carson Street and West College Parkway up the hill to the Western Nevada College (WNC) campus.

Vietnam veteran returns to find remains of fellow Marine
Submitted by editor on Fri, 04/29/2016 - 4:33pmIn his quest to find the remains of his boyhood friend and fellow Marine lost to the mountains of Vietnam, Michael Archer met a solider for the other side.
“He looked at me and he had tears in his eyes,” Archer recalled. “He said, ‘You know, we’re pretty lucky.’ I started crying. You never expect to hear that from a man you were trying to kill.”
Archer’s latest book, “The Long Goodbye,” traces the story of Lance Corporal Thomas Patrick Mahoney III, who disappeared during the bloody, months-long Battle of Khe Sanh.

Susan Asbury Crowell, wife of Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell, and sponsor of the ship, officially introduced it with a bottle of champagne during the ceremony, which also featured Nevada Congressman Mark Amodei.

Vice Adm. Joseph P. Mulloy, deputy chief of Naval Operations, Integration of Capabilities and Resources, will serve as principal speaker. Susan Asbury Crowell, wife of the Honorable Robert Crowell, Mayor of Carson City, Nev., will serve as the ship’s sponsor. In a time-honored Navy tradition, she will give the order to “man our ship and bring her to life!”
Toys For Tots celebrates successful 2015 campaign

That faithfulness will stand to benefit around 3,000 children this year in Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties.

The Marines of the Bridgeport Warfare Training Facility will be on hand once again this year to assist with donations.

This weekend the Marine Corps League of Carson City Silver State Detachment 630 will hold an annual outreach event at the Walmart store on Retail Drive on Saturday and Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
This outreach is for charity donations to the good of our community which includes Carson City, Dayton, Virginia City, Minden and Gardnerville.

WNC student veteran, community servant receives gift of refurbished vehicle

For the second time in seven months, Western Nevada College has worked with National Auto Body Council Executive Director Chuck Sulkala, State Farm Insurance Company, and the Recycled Rides project to donate a refurbished automobile to a deserving community member.
U.S. Marine helicopter training begins in late July at Lake Tahoe Airport

The Marine Light Attack Helicopter Training Squadron 303 is based out of Camp Pendleton, Calif. Squadron 303 trains all of the future pilots for the Marine Corps Cobra and Huey fleets.
The training will include day and night flights of multiple aircraft between Lake Tahoe Airport, Minden-Tahoe Airport and Carson City Airport.
Hundreds show for 2015 Carson City Sheriff's Office Cops and Kids Open House
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sat, 05/16/2015 - 1:57pmAfter 12 years, the annual Carson City Sheriff's Office Cops and Kids open house Saturday was among the biggest yet, with dozens of families and hundreds of children taking part in games, contests and information events well into the late morning and into the afternoon.
The popular community event is aimed at children of all ages and their families as a way introduce public safety agencies, especially law enforcement, to them. The event is part family carnival without the rides, and part educational experience, where music, food, contests, songs and dancing are the orders of the day.

The Carson City Council of the United States Navy League meets on quarterly basis conduction a dinner, meeting and informational speakers that talk about the various duties the Sea Services provide. This quarter’s Dinner and meeting will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at the Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino, Carson City. The Social hour will start at 5:30 PM and Dinner will begin at 6:30PM.

Marines from the Bridgeport Warfare Center will be at all three Walmart stores in the Carson City and Douglas County area on Friday and Saturday accepting donations. Come out and support our local children. Every child deserves a Happy Holiday.
