The Brewery Arts Center is the place to be St. Patrick’s Day weekend when a bit of Ireland and Scotland come to town. The folk duo Men of Worth will bring Celtic music to life in the Performance Hall on Friday, March 16th at 8pm.

Man found guilty of assault on Carson City Sheriff's deputy

Daniel Lane Holley, 39, has been found guilty of Assaulting a Police Officer stemming from a September 30, 2011 domestic disturbance at Holley’s west side Carson City residence.

Carson City Sheriff’s deputies were called to Holley’s residence at approximately 5:30 p.m. on September 30, 2011, after a neighbor called 9-1-1 to report a loud disturbance coming from the house. Holley was gone when deputies arrived, but his girlfriend reported that Holley was very intoxicated and had been causing a disturbance at the house and in front of their infant child.

Fifteen Apply For Nevada Top Public Schools Job As Search Process Moves Forward

CARSON CITY – Fifteen people, eight from within Nevada and seven from out of the state, have applied for the job of state superintendent of public instruction.

Three of the 15 did candidates that applied by a Dec. 30 deadline not meet the statutory requirements for the position, such as having a master’s degree in education or school administration, the Sandoval administration said in an update on the search process.

Registration open for Kinder Kup Race Series to Benefit Heavenly Foundation

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation will kick-off the 12th Annual Kinder Kup Race Series at Heavenly Mountain Resort, South Shore Lake Tahoe, on Sunday, January 22, from 8am to 2pm. Open to all skiers and snowboarders age six and under, the Kinder Kup series is designed to introduce young athletes to competition in a friendly environment. No previous race experience necessary and all abilities are welcome. Entry is $20 and includes a World Cup only competitor lift ticket if needed.

Carson City Symphony begins rehearsals

The Carson City Symphony conducted by David Bugli will begin rehearsals on Wednesday, January 11, at 7:00 p.m., in the Carson High School band room, 1111 N. Saliman Road in Carson City, for a February concert, "Russian Treasures."

Carson City Symphony is a volunteer, community organization, and auditions are not required. Registration, however, is necessary. Current openings are for strings. For information, call the Symphony at 775-883-4154.

Lake Tahoe planning agency committee endorses land regulation rules

Lake Tahoe, CA/NV – The Regional Plan Update Committee of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Governing Board made broad strides this month including endorsement of updated policies that would improve how aspects of land coverage and planning procedures are managed in the Tahoe Region.

With Christmas two weeks away, one of the best stocking stuffers for local anglers is a California fishing license. If you're planning to fish in the State of California in 2012, you'll need a new license as of Jan. 1.
You can purchase that license and any applicable stamp at a number of local outlets or on the Internet.

Outdoors with Don Q: Some information about Barrow, Alaska

November 18 is a very significant date in the lives of several thousand hardy Alaskans. Those folks live in a unique location known as Barrow, Alaska, which is the northernmost community in the United States.
It is located in the Far North, on the edge of the Arctic Ocean, about 320 miles north of the Arctic Circle.
On November 18, the sun sets below the horizon at Barrow and it will not peek back up over the horizon until January 24 (weather permitting).
That’s more than two months without sunshine. Wow!

Commercial market squid fishery to close Nov. 18

The California Department of Fish and Game will close the commercial fishery for market squid, Loligo (Doryteuthis) opalescens, on Friday, Nov. 18 at noon.
Based on landings information and projections,DFG has determined that the season’s harvest limit of 118,000 short tons of market squid will be reached by that date.
The squid fishing season runs from April through the following March of each year, meaning the fishery will remain closed through March 31, 2012.

Big trout headed for Oregon’s Willamette Valley

Of the more than 6 million trout that are released into Oregon waters every year, by far the largest are the ones that will be released over the next two months in Willamette Valley lakes and ponds.
Starting next week, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will release 238 of the nearly 3,000 super-sized brood trout that will be stocked at popular fishing holes from Eugene to Portland from now through the middle of January.

Occupy Carson City protests and march for fair taxes on Saturday

Occupy Wall Street began their two-week march from Nov. 9-23 to Washington, D.C. to tell Congress' Deficit Super Committee that the Occupy movement is against any extension of the Bush tax cuts. An extension of those cuts, which are due to expire in 2012, as well as reducing the tax rate on the highest bracket from 35 percent to 28 percent is being suggested as part of possible negotiations in creating the deficit reduction package which has a deadline of Nov. 23.
