BRIC offers new business education series

CARSON CITY, NEVADA – The Business Resource Innovation Center is launching a series of free business education classes beginning March 21, 2012. The series, “Hwy 101-RoadMap to Business Success”, will be held Wednesdays from Noon to 1:30 pm. These classes will complement the existing business library resources available, as well as individual business counseling and mentoring offered by the BRIC. These free classes will focus on key information for both entrepreneurs and existing businesses.

National Flood Safety Awareness Week

The Nevada Division of Emergency Management/Homeland Security and the National Weather Service are partnering together to educate the citizens of Nevada on National Flood Safety Awareness Week, March 12-16.

According to the National Weather Service, Floods and Flash Floods are the #1 weather-related killer in the United States and can occur any time of the year. This is why the Nevada Division of Emergency Management and the National Weather Service Offices in Reno, Las Vegas, and Elko want to help spread the word about being flood safe.

Douglas authorities seek help in locating suspects who attempted to cash stolen checks at Bank of America

Douglas County authorities seek the public's help in locating several suspects involved in an attempt to cash a stolen check on Saturday at a drive-thru window at Bank of America on Topsy Lane in north Douglas County near Carson City.
The primary suspect, an unidentified male adult, attempted to cash the stolen check at 11:15 a.m. on Saturday while using the drive-thru teller window, said Douglas County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Jim Halsey.

The Rand Avenue convenience store behind Tierra Plaza was robbed last night at approximately 8:30 p.m. No arrests have been made. The log indicates that the suspect may have injured himself during the robbery, as an officer reported discovering blood.

A DUI checkpoint is scheduled for 6 p.m. - midnight this Saturday, March 17th, at the intersection of Carson and Colorado streets. Officers will be inspecting vehicles for intoxicated drivers as well as child passenger safety.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with Joining Forces, will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint from 6:00 pm to midnight on Saturday, March 17th. Sheriff’s Office personnel will be greeting all drivers that pass through the checkpoint. To keep traffic flowing smoothly, any drivers that show signs of being under the influence will be directed to a second screening area to avoid back up during the checkpoint.

Book Launch: Nevada State Prison

Nevada Commission on Homeland Security Determine Priorities

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, chairman of the Homeland Security Commission, along with 16 voting members determined key priorities for the Homeland Security Working Group 2012 grant application process.

The March 2 Commission meeting was dedicated to identifying and establishing the Commission's priorities for the Federal Fiscal Year 2012 Homeland Security Grant Program (HSGP).  The federal funds allocated to the State of Nevada in 2012 total $4,628,239 (State Homeland Security grant for $2,801,316; Urban Area Security Initiative grant for $1,826,923).

Douglas authorities make arrests in Lake Tahoe cocaine sting

The Tri-NET Narcotic Task Force, working in conjunction with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Street Enforcement Team (SET), the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Investigators, and the Santa Cruz California Police Department arrested 26 year-old Joseph Perez and 25 year-old Oscar Madriz, both of Santa Cruz, California, on charges of trafficking and sales of cocaine.
