What Works: Live in Carson City, Work Anywhere
Today, I’m going to put on my career coaching hat for this column. Lately, I have run into a lot of educated professionals who are having difficulty finding gainful employment. These people have bachelors and masters degrees. They are skilled, intelligent, and ready to work. Unfortunately, low turnover in professional ranks means low opportunity for local positions.
So, what’s the solution? One friend of mine took a management position outside of her field. However, there’s another opportunity — remote work.
Employment is trending to accept the remote worker. Did you know 23 percent of our nation’s work force is remote?
The beauty of living in the digital age is we no longer need to work where our feet are planted. My largest client, currently, is headquartered in Elko.
My business coaching clients are in California, New York, Washington, and Texas. Last month, I helped open a gym in McKinney, Texas without setting foot on an airplane. I love technology!
What does this mean for you? You can live here and enjoy the benefits of low cost of living, a beautiful lake, and thousands of natural amenities, and still have that professional career (and paycheck) you crave.
Here’s how it’s done.
Well, for one, my recruitment division has a partnership which has access to jobs. You can email your resume to see if a local or remote position is available in your line of work. When you are searching on career sites for positions, search major cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas, and New York. Type in the word “remote” in quotes. LinkedIn is a great site for this. If you are up for doing freelance work, you can find freelance listings on sites like Guru and Upwork.
Remote positions are for a certain type of professional. Apply for a remote position if you are:
1) Self-directed
2) Comfortable with technology
3) OK with travel
4) A good communicator
5) Can communicate well through phone and email
Remote work is not for everyone. However, you really can work from anywhere if you want to. Consider if you make money in a state with state income tax, you may have to pay that. Walk into a remote position knowing exactly how state laws will impact you.
Of course, if you need help with your job hunt, I’m always here. My recruitment division is fantastic at getting people focused and employed. Right now, we are seeking mental health professionals for our client in Elko. So, if you are one and you are looking for a non-remote opportunity which engages with rural areas through telemedicine, get in touch with me!
