Headed into Thursday, April 11, 2019 we welcome Carson City to another day where weather forecasters say there's a chance of rain and maybe even a few snow showers mixed in. Beyond the weather we're looking at a blockbuster day and night filled will activities throughout town. From library presentations, a TV show casting call at the Carson Nugget, an afternoon hike, to a train history presentation, a book signing at the Brewery Arts Center, a CHS theater performance and the Carson City movie screening premier of "The Mustang" filmed at the historic Nevada State Prison, there's something for everyone. Hello Carson City and welcome to Tuesday, April 9, 2018. Today will be a mixed bag weather wise, featuring showers, gusty conditions, sunshine and much cooler temperatures. In other words, it looks and feels a lot like spring. Meanwhile, we've got a full plate of activities around town. Read on for more.

SILVER SPRINGS, Nev. — Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties’ April public meeting is on Thursday, April 11, 9 a.m. at the Silver Springs Community Center, 2945 Fort Churchill Street. This month, the two hour meeting includes a special one-hour presentation on “Domestic Violence and Coordinated Community Response.”

He’s got a street named after him and statue on the mall between the state capitol and Nevada Legislature. Now Abraham Curry, the Father of Carson City, is going to have a day of his own at the Nevada State Museum.

Onward and upward Carson City as we head into the first day of the work week, Monday, April 8, 2019. There's quite a lineup of activities, especially if you're an artist, a lover of art forms or both. Expect partly sunny skies and warm temperatures with a high near 70. Good morning Carson City! Today is Saturday, April 6. While it's going to be a bit cloudy today, we'll have a high of 56 degrees. Sunday and Monday are almost hitting 70, though, with highs at 67 and 68!

On the docket for today is a Celtic Music concert, a Ducks Unlimited Banquet, the April Carson City Wine Walk, farming workshops, kitten parties, and more.

The 80th session of the Nevada Legislature is underway with over 1,200 bills up for consideration. With so many bills it is nearly impossible to give each one the proper consideration required, as was intended by the founders of our great state. This means we are considering a great number of laws; however, what we should be focusing on is producing well thought out legislation.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and Carson City has gone blue with the Pinwheels for Prevention Campaign, a national event hosted by Carson City’s Advocates to End Domestic Violence, and Prevent Child Abuse Nevada.

On Friday, Carson City residents joined together to plant pinwheels across the Nevada Legislature's lawn, in an effort to raise awareness about preventing child abuse.

“The pinwheel is an uplifting reminder of childhood and the bright futures all children deserve,” a spokesperson for the national event said. “We want to reinforce the notion that healthy child development serves as a foundation for both community and economic development.”

Carson City was abuzz Thursday evening at the Nevada State Legislature, in which over 100 Nevadan residents gathered to support honeybees, and their ability to be kept by residents.

Senate Bill 389, relating to the ability to keep bees in residential zones in Nevada, which has been hotly debated since it was announced on March 20, was read during a Natural Resources Committee meeting Wednesday.

Residents attended to an extent that legislative staff needed to open an overflow room to provide for those gathered, in which the meeting was televised from down the hall.

Deciding what to do with the rest of your life can be daunting. Walking into a library isn’t. That’s the premise behind a new initiative, “Libraries Equal Education,” where Nevada libraries are harnessing resources to help people match with suitable career paths.

Hello Carson City and welcome to the midweek. It is Wednesday, April 3, 2019. Looks like sunshine ahead today as we get a break from showers before another system heads our way tomorrow into Friday. Whether it is a mid-morning or afternoon walk or evening bike ride or quick hike, step outside and enjoy the day.

This is the fifth in a series of columns summarizing my Controller’s Annual Report (CAR) for fiscal year 2018 (FY18).

The first two columns showed that since FY06 state spending has grown faster than Nevada’s economy, thus imposing an ever-larger real burden on Nevada families and businesses, whose real per-capita incomes are lower now than in FY06. The other two analyses reviewed spending on health and social services and on K-12 education, the two largest budget items by far and the only major areas on which spending has grown faster than Nevada’s economy.

Senator Keith Pickard of southern Nevada, the man behind the hotly-debated bee bill, is standing behind his legislation in the face of controversy; however, he says, the Legislative Council Bureau of the Nevada State Legislature is at fault for not following his original intention. The bill's original intention was to stop the spread of Africanized Bees in Nevada, he says, which needs to be dealt with on a state level.

We're looking at a steady flow of showers today, according to the National Weather Service with snow in the upper elevations of the Sierra. There is a Winter Weather Advisory until midnight for the west slope of the Sierra. Today in town we have events that range from a Carson High School team fundraiser to movies to politics to fitness. CARSON CITY — Native American artist Melissa Melero-Moose finds inspiration for her mixed media creations from the landscape and culture of the Northern Paiute of the Great Basin.

“Willows, tules, cattails, and pine nuts are all very important staples to the Paiute people, being sources of food, shelter, and implements made with artistic intention,” she said. “I consider these works to be a perspective of my tribe and culture through the eyes of a Native woman, mother and artist.”

On Monday morning Mayor Bob Crowell donated $500 to the Carson City Chamber of Commerce 2019 Leadership Institute to help fund this year’s class project, a bee hotel in honor of the community being named the first Bee City USA of Nevada.

Well the weekend sure went fast as we say goodbye to March. Now we're heading into Monday, April 1, 2019 where pranks, larks and tom foolery are orders of the day. No fooling when it comes to the weather though. We may see a slight chance of showers in the afternoon and evening with more of a chance of rain on Tuesday. Stay tuned.

The April Board of Supervisors meeting will be held on April 4 beginning at 8:30 am. Items on the table for discussion include a tax on tobacco vapor products, legislation regarding marijuana shop taxes, expanding hiking trail systems, upcoming legislation, and more.

The April 4 meeting will occur in the Sierra Room of the community center, located at 851 E. William Street.

Welcome Carson City to Sunday, March 31, 2019. The last day of the month will bring sunny skies and a daytime high somewhere in the low 60s. Ideal spring weather before the next system arrives Monday bringing with it warmer temperatures but showers as well. Today there's art gallery showings, two children's theater performances, a bike ride and a tour of the stone Wungnema House at Mills Park.

Nevada Assemblyman Greg Smith, D-Sparks, was sworn in to office by Nevada Supreme Court Justice James Hardesty at the Legislative Building in Carson City on Wednesday.

Smith, 56, a retired union apprenticeship program administrator, was appointed to the vacant District 30 seat by Washoe County Commissioners after Assemblyman Mike Sprinkle resigned earlier this month following sexual harassment claims.
