Public invited to grand opening of Sierra Nevada Health Center

The Sierra Nevada Health Center in Carson City will hold a grand opening July 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public is invited.
A ribbon cutting ceremony will feature a reception, with refreshments, hors d’oeuvres, entertainment, raffle prizes and guided tours. Keynote speakers include: Mayor Bob Crowell, William G. Gordon, Board Chairman of Nevada Health Centers, Inc., and Thomas G. Chase, CEO of Nevada Health Centers, Inc.

Federal Agency Names New Accountable Care Organization in Nevada

CARSON CITY – The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced today that Nevada is among 40 states where people with Medicare can receive health care from an Accountable Care Organization (ACO).

ACOs are organizations formed by groups of doctors and other health care providers that have agreed to work together to coordinate care for people with Medicare.

Carson City Road Report for July 9-16

There will be nightly lane closures on US 395 from the junction of US 50W (Spooner) to 1st Street in Minden, Sunday through Thursday, between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. There will be flagger controlled traffic.

There will be lane closures in the southbound direction of US 395 from Eastlake Boulevard in Washoe County to the Carson Street Interchange between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

On July 4, 2012, after 6 years as resident theater company at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada, Wild Horse Children's Theater was evicted from the museum via an email letter with no discussions or negotiations of the eviction. WHCT was asked to remove all theater items out in 30 days without an exploration of how the museum and WHCT might work together to unwind from this 6 year relationship by offering storage space until something else was secured and/or letting WHCT continue at least until the end of the year with the programming that was scheduled at the museum.

Fire restrictions begin Monday in the Lake Tahoe Basin

Fire restrictions will go into effect in the Lake Tahoe Basin on Monday July 9. A Forest Order has been issued to provide for public safety through the end of the official 2012 fire season.
Campfires, including charcoal barbecues, are prohibited except in exempted recreation sites. Smoking on National Forest land is prohibited, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, or within an exempted recreation site. Fire restrictions are intended to reduce the possibility of human-caused wildfires over the summer season. (see PDF below.)

Attorney General Urges Nevadans To Apply For Free Foreclosure Review By New Sept. 30 Deadline

CARSON CITY – The deadline for a free, federal independent foreclosure review for Nevadans whose homes were in foreclosure in 2009 or 2010 has been extended to Sept. 30, 2012, Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto said today.

The previous deadline was July 31.

Pablo Cruise headlines A Concert Under the Stars Wednesday

Dave Jenkins returns for his second performance at A Concert Under the Stars, a fundraiser for The Greenhouse Project, July 11 with his band, Pablo Cruise.
Jenkins performed four years ago for the inaugural event, which takes place at Café at Adele’s, but his love of music began at a tender age.
“My folks had an old pump organ and I couldn’t reach the pedals,” Jenkins said. “I’d play and my sister would pump the pedals for me; I always had an ear and a love for music.”

Carson High School Class of '82 - 30 year reunion

Crime Log: Carson City officers arrest several over July 4 holiday

Carson City Sheriff's deputies have arrested the following individuals for felony allegations:

  • Heidi Ann Brouhard, 22, a Carson City woman, just prior to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday Brouhard was arrested for a felony larceny warrant in her name as well as a misdemeanor larceny warrant in her name. Bail is set at $20,000.
  • Devyn Lawrence Smith-Thompson, 18, a Reno man, at about 7 p.m. Wednesday. Smith-Thompson was arrested for grand larceny. Bail is set at $25,000.

Smith will present “Smart Phones, Smart Photos”, an informational program that will provide basic tips for taking photos with a smart phone. This program is geared toward novice users and will offer information about apps for editing photos, as well as storing and saving photos.

Born on the Fourth of July: Veteran remembers service

Wilbur Lane came into the world July 4, 1921 and is one of a handful of remaining World War II veterans who served on the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, which entered the war Dec.7, 1941 when her planes found the Japanese squadrons attacking Pearl Harbor.
“It was the most decorated ship of WWII, called The Galloping Ghost because (the Japanese) couldn’t find us,” Lane said from his home in Dayton. “Every time they bombed us, they’d announce it on the radio in Japan.”

State Contractors Seek Support To Preserve Highway Funding Revenue For Road Projects, Jobs

CARSON CITY – About $87 million in state taxes that could be parlayed into 10 times as much to pay for critical road improvements are ready to flow to the state Department of Transportation next year, but there are concerns the money could be diverted to other needs.

Construction will continue at the intersection of E. Fifth Street and Airport Road. The westbound lane of E. Fifth Street will be closed in the vicinity of the intersection and there will be flagger controlled traffic. Minimal delays are possible.

Mighty Surf Lords to open 'Concert Under The Stars'

Lake Tahoe inspectors intercept, decontaminate four boats for invasive mussels

The July 4th Holiday and fireworks celebrations always bring an influx of boaters to the Lake Tahoe Basin. With sunny skies and warm temperatures predicted for the 4th of July holiday week, boaters are urged to Clean, Drain and Dry their boats before arriving at one of 5 roadside inspection stations in the Tahoe to avoid delays and decontamination fees.

DUI checkpoint slated for Incline Village at Lake Tahoe during July 4 holiday

The Nevada Highway Patrol, along with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Sparks Police Department, and the Carson City Sheriff’s Office are planning a sobriety check point at Lake Tahoe for the Fourth of July holiday.
The check point will be held in Incline Village and is being funded by a Joining Forces grant from the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety.
Due to the fireworks display and other special events planned at Lake Tahoe, a large increase in both vehicular and pedestrian traffic expected during the holiday, said NHP Sgt. Scott Farmer.

Outdoors with Don Q: The Fourth of July will be different this year

If you have not yet made any plans to be in the Great Outdoors for the upcoming Fourth of July, you might want to heed some or all of the following tips.
Because the Fourth of July falls in the middle of the week on Wednesday this year, it will put a crimp in many folks’ plans for celebrating in the outdoors, as many of them will only have Wednesday off as a holiday.
So, their celebrating will have to occur either on the preceding weekend or the weekend following the Fourth.

Carson City’s wide open high desert roads and proximity to the High Sierra is the main attraction for hundreds of motorcycle enthusiasts from around the world this summer when it hosts the 2012 American Motorcycle Association's International Women & Motorcycling Conference, July 26-29.

New motorcycle event to be possibly held in Virginia City

CARSON CITY -- The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Sierra Front Field Office in Carson City, Nevada is requesting the community's input in the development of an environmental assessment (EA) for a motorcycle event to be held in Virginia City, Storey County, Nev.

The Virginia City Motorcycle Club (Club) has submitted to the BLM a five year Special Recreation Permit (SRP) application for the “Virginia City Grand Prix” event. Comments will be accepted until July 26, 2012.
