Fernley 95A Speedway Race Results for July 7, 2012

Saturday night’s racing program at Fernley 95A Speedway started off with every car present on track for a tribute to fallen racer Tommy Teters, who passed away recently. Teters’ sprint car took one last lap and the checkered flag.
The Outlaw Karts began the show in the small infield track dedicated to “Grandpa” Rogers, and Dale Creiglow of Fernley took the Beginner Box Stock main as well as the heat race. The Intermediate Box Stock victory went to Cole Reid of Fernley after a race-long duel with fellow Fernley driver Steven Schroctlin. Jacob Dias of Portola, California passed Schroctlin on the last lap to take second, relegating Schroctlin to third at the checker.
Hobby Stocks led off the action on the big 3/8 mile clay oval, with polesitter Jake Baker of Reno leading for most of the race. Silver Springs driver Carl Barlow started at the back of the pack, with other fast drivers including Rick Miller of Sun Valley. The race was halted twice by red flags, the second of which involved Baker. He was able to continue, but Dayton’s Mike Carpenter was towed to the pits with severe front-end damage. Barlow took the lead on the final restart and held it to the checker, followed home by Miller, Fallon’s Rob Casey, Dean Clark of Silver Springs, and Minden driver David Partelow. Partelow, Miller, and Royce Goetz of Dayton won the earlier heat races.
In a repeat of the Hobby Stock pattern, Fallon’s Al Bishop started at the rear of the Pure Stock Mini main, but soon surged into the lead. Fellow Fallonite Kyle Babb drove a steady race to come home second. But there was some spirited racing going on back in the pack, with Fernley’s Bracee Langevin taking on first Al Serchio Jr. of Stagecoach, and then Dayton’s Loghan Cologna to take third at the checker. Cologna finished fourth and Travis Barr of Reno rounded out the top five, one lap down. Barr had the consolation of a heat race win, with Bishop taking the other heat.
Stephen Crook of Sparks took command of the Mod Mini main at the outset, and was never challenged. Reno’s Dennis Crook surged from his eighth place starting spot to second on the first lap, but couldn’t catch the flying Stephen. The field was strung out for most of the race, with big gaps between the first top four positions. Justin McIlvain of Sparks settled into third with Will Ritchey fourth. Those positions held to the checkered flag, with those four the only cars on the lead lap. Justin Busch was fifth, a lap down. The Crooks each won a heat race.
Fernley’s Tate Morehead grabbed the lead in the Dwarf car main and led every lap but the last one. Rodney Sweet of Winnemucca charged to second place, but was unable to catch the flying Morehead. Behind the leaders, Carson City’s Shane Ramthun battled with Yerington driver Glenn Sciarani and Robert Miller of Gardnerville, who was racing a Dwarf car for the first time. The trio swapped positions a number of times as the race wore on. On the last lap, Morehead made a slight bobble coming off of turn two, and that was all Sweet needed to snatch the lead and the victory. Morehead recovered to take second ahead of Miller, Ramthun, and Sciarani. Morehead and Sweet each scored a heat race win.
It took a while for the Pro Stock race to get underway, with accidents and aborted starts, and a generator failure that darkened the track for about 45 minutes. But when the green finally flew it was Reno’s Craig Nieman shooting to the lead and holding it to the checker. Behind him, Fallon’s Rob Grace ran second with an ever-changing cast of cars swapping spots for third through eighth. There was lots of side-by-side and nose to tail racing throughout the field, with Carson City’s Gary Nevers in the thick of it. Nieman and Grace crossed the line 1-2 with Nevers in third, Reno’s Josh Ogg fourth, and Dean Cichowicz of Mound House fifth. However, Nieman’s car failed post-race inspection and he was disqualified. This moved everybody else up a position, and Derrick Rauscher of Reno was awarded fifth-place points. Grace and Nieman won the earlier heat races.
The IMCA Modifieds finished off the evening with a 25-lap main. Adam Walters took the early lead and motored away from Fernley’s Mark Skender and Russell Rosario of Truckee. Reno’s Wade Lumsden ran fourth, but was soon overtaken by Jake Holland of Calpine, California, who was charging through the field from the back along with Minden’s Robert Miller and Fernley driver Shawn Natenstedt. Holland picked off Lumsden, then Skender, and then a caution flag bunched the field. On the restart, Holland attached himself to Walters’ rear nerf bar while Rosario and Miller scrapped over third place. Holland pulled alongside Walters and the two ran side by side until Holland finally pulled ahead to take the checker. Walters finished second, followed by Miller, Rosario, and Natenstedt. Heat race wins went to Natenstedt and Miller.
The next race at Fernley 95A Speedway will take place on July 21. Spectator gates open at 3 pm, racing starts at 6 pm. General admission is $8 for adults, with reduced prices for kids and seniors. Visit www.fernley95Aspeedway for more information.
