CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval figured the Nevada soldiers serving in Afghanistan appreciated his visit last week when they literally tore the organizational patches off their uniforms and offered them up as keepsakes on his trip to see the country’s military efforts first-hand.
Sandoval, back nearly a full week today, said his eyes teared up when the soldiers made such a heartfelt gesture.
“But it’s all about the soldiers, it’s not about me,” he said.

CARSON CITY – A federal agency that sought comment on rules that would have applied commercial motor vehicle regulations to farm vehicles on public roadways has decided not to go forward with any changes, bringing a sigh of relief to Nevada farmers and ranchers.
The U.S. Department of Transportation said in a statement that it has determined “that most states have already adopted common sense enforcement practices that allow farmers to safely move equipment to and from their fields.”

Monday night's presentation of the new plan for the Carson City Center development to the Nugget Advisory Committee has put this much-criticized project back on track, even winning over some long-time opponents.

The new plan is different enough it needs a new name: Nugget Project 2.0.

CARSON CITY – If a $490,000 grant to plant trees in Clark County public places as part of a federal job-creating stimulus project should be measured by the “greening” of Southern Nevada, then the effort might be considered a modest success.
Thirteen different government and nonprofit entities applied for 1,814 trees for planting at 35 different public areas in Southern Nevada through the grant. A total of 1,541 trees have been provided to the agencies and groups for planting, mostly at schools and parks around the Vegas valley.

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval today appointed Robert Halstead as executive director of the Agency for Nuclear Projects, the agency responsible for oversight of the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository. He will start in the job Sept. 19.
Halstead will replace Joe Strolin, who has been serving as acting director since January.

At the Carson City Fandango Galaxy cineplex, I was a bit confused watching the new movie. Once I got the idea of the plot --- guy, girl agree to sex with no emotional strings attached, I thought I had been caught in a time warp. The job of redrawing Nevada’s political lines has fallen to District Judge James Todd Russell after two Democrat-approved redistricting plans were vetoed by Gov. Brian Sandoval. Sandoval vetoed the measures after concluding the proposals did not follow the federal Voting Rights Act.

I just read an article about the helicopter training going on at night at the Carson City airport. It is cool we can help these pilots with their training, and the extra income to the area is nice, but I don't know that the lack of sleep for many residents of north Carson is worth it. I don't suppose it is feasible to, in addition to their night-vision training, to incorporate some stealth training?

The aptly if crudely named "Horrible Bosses," now playing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, could be taken as an update on the Three Stooges, with Jason Bateman as Nick Hendricks, Charlie Dale as Dale Arbus and Jason Sudekis as Ken Buckman. Stooges fans may resent the comparison but it's pretty accurate, even down to the facial slaps of Curly, Moe and Larry.

Here Nick is bypassed by a conniving boss David Harken (Kevin Spacey) who gives himself the job Nick has been waiting for. Kurt is bypassed as company president.

If you really want to see a 3-D movie that exploits the medium, catch 'Transformers: The Dark of the Moon" now playing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City. You'll be bombarded by rocks and pieces of giant metal figures flying out at you.
