Movie Review: 'John Carter' a $250 million botch but sometimes fun
Submitted by admin on Sun, 03/11/2012 - 1:02pmMake no mistake about it, "John Carter," playing now at the Fandango multiplex in Carson City, is a film with a nine-figure budget that takes itself seriously, although audiences may not. It's ripped from the pages of a 1912 newspaper series by Edgar Rice Burroughs of "Tarzan fame" (newspapers ran fun things like that in better times).

Movie Review: Aniston and Rudd catch 'Wanderlust'
Submitted by admin on Tue, 02/28/2012 - 1:35amThe romantic comedy "Wanderlust," now playing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, is an R-rated outing that has plenty of the dirty words, touch of nudity and Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston as a married couple in New York City. Movie Review: 'Ghost Rider, Spirit of Vengeance' not very ghostly
Submitted by admin on Wed, 02/22/2012 - 1:49pmThe action-Satanic film "Ghost Rider, Spirit of Vengeance," currently booming away at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, stars Nicholas Gage as Johnny Blaze, motorcycle stunt rider with a hangup that puts him in seclusion until summoned again to ride his motorcycle blazing with fire and to don his alter ego at Ghost Rider, with the burning skull.
Right off, this is a lousy movie from the making sense point of view and it is the latest in Gage's series of flops. But he keeps trying and his grimaces are standard stock from the past.

Column: Has City Center been judiciously considered?
Submitted by admin on Mon, 02/13/2012 - 7:07pmA vocal minority’s intermittent cheerleading promotes the massive City Center project. Their objective: replace the city library with a +$75 million, three-times-the-size library complex just east of the Nugget Casino. (The ‘official’ $49 million cost curiously excludes 30 years of interest payments.)
Absent from this well-intentioned, but ill-conceived project are viability, necessity and prudence.
Sandoval Opposes Tax Petitions, Says Revenue Discussions Belong At Legislature
Submitted by Nevada News Bureau on Fri, 02/10/2012 - 3:12pmCARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval said today he opposes the initiative petitions filed by Las Vegas businessman Monte Miller to raise gaming and mining tax rates.
“I believe initiative petitions are a poor way to set tax policy,” Sandoval said when asked about the measures that could eventually go before Nevada voters. “I’ve advised Mr. Miller, who is a friend, that I do, respectfully, oppose the petitions.
“For an issue of that import I think it is critical that it would be debated at the legislative level and not be of the initiative petition process,” he said.
