Foreclosure crisis hurts us all
Submitted by admin on Thu, 11/10/2011 - 10:46amI have a friend here in Carson City who will soon be losing her home. She's not the first, and probably not the last.
She bought her house back near the height of the boom. It's a fairly small, modest home, but fits her needs almost perfectly. At the time, her income from her sales job easily covered her mortgage and expenses. Times were good.

Movie Review: 'The Thing' doesn't live up to past version
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Sat, 10/15/2011 - 6:20amThe movie "The Thing," currently playing at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City, is labeled by its creators as "prequel" to the 1982 film that is rated as a classic sci-fi horror film. Too bad this prequel doesn't have the hard-edged script and at least some science to back up some of the more dubious scenes. (Two other versions of the same story have been made and forgotten.)

Column: Occupy Carson City
Submitted by T. Costa on Wed, 10/12/2011 - 9:54pmI stood outside of Comma Coffee Wednesday night, observing the people entering. I was hoping a friend of mine was going to come.
Finally, I went inside. There was a sign leaning against a chair that said OCCUPY NV CAPITOL. I introduced myself; these were the people I was here to see.
There were only 12 or 13 of us, but we all had one thing in common: we were disenchanted. We were the hungry, the tired of being pushed around, the broke. We are the 99%.
I should probably back up and explain myself now.

Movie Review: 'Ides of March' a fine Clooney-Gosling political film
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Mon, 10/10/2011 - 7:00am"The Ides of March," currently showing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, is a welcome change from the summer fare of bare-chested shoot 'em ups. It's a serious film about American politics with a fine cast headed by Ryan Gosling as Stephen Myers, a sleazy press secretary to George Clooney's Mike Morris, seeking the Democratic nomination for president at a hotly contested Ohio vote.
Clooney is almost just a supporting actor but even in his shorter screen time manages to impress. He also directs, produces and co-writes the script, which is tight and intelligent.
