This week's Senator Square features guest writers Ananda Campbell and Bridget Gordon-Johnson who explain Monday homeroom academic strategies. Campbell is a CHS Library Media Specialist and Carson City School District Library Coordinator. Gordon is a CHS counselor. This is their report:

NEW WASHOE CITY — Enjoy some holiday cheer at Washoe Lake State Park with a sparkling drive-through festival of lights. Campground Loop B will be decorated with a jolly display of twinkling lights and holiday scenes. Stay warm and merry as you listen to your favorite holiday music while driving through the campground, enjoying the cheerful decorations.

Looking for a safe, cozy new family tradition this holiday season? The Virginia Truckee Railroad has developed the perfect solution with their Holiday steam trains, Candy Cane Express and Comstock Train of Lights, departing from the original V. & T. R.R. 1870 passenger depot in Virginia City.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the KTVN Share Your Christmas Food Drive at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City and at Minden's Carson Valley Inn, Homestead Holidays at the Silver Saddle Ranch and more. The Polar Express Train Rides are sold out for the rest of the year, but Santa Train express rides are steaming up at the Nevada State Railroad Museum over the weekend. Read on for details.

What better way to celebrate the holidays, and get into the Christmas spirit than to sing Christmas songs with your local community. If you've ever wanted to share your talent with others, come on down to the auditions and
be prepared to sing a song with accompaniment. Piano sheet music, CD or a tape, and a cappella can be accommodated.

Christmas is getting closer, and in Carson City, that means holiday trains. From the V&T Railway's Polar Express to the Nevada State Railroad Museum's Santa Train, rails around the state capital are busy delivering Saint Nicholas to children and spreading Christmas cheer.

There are only two more Saturdays until Christmas, and Santa Claus is back in Carson City again this weekend ahead of the big holiday.

Home Ranch for the Holidays, a celebration of the season that includes a vintage toy exhibit, music and treats, returns to Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 15-16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Christmas spirit is very present around Carson City these days with just over two weeks remaining before the big day.

The spirit of Christmas and Hanukkah come to life as the 18-piece Reno Jazz Orchestra (RJO) presents, “A World of Joy,” featuring holiday music from the U.S. to Brazil, Puerto Rico, Israel, Russia, Austria and back.

Joining the RJO is Pat Esters' Gospel Choir, starring vocalists Pat Esters, Lori Johnson, David Wells, and Caitlin Collins. The Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra will open the show at the Reno performances.

The first shows are Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. at the Cargo Concert Hall at Whitney Peak Hotel in Reno.

Santa comes in all shapes, sizes, and apparently, vehicles. Hop aboard the Santa Train at the Nevada Railroad Museum. It’s an out-of-this-world Alien Santa at the annual Zen Christmas at A to Zen. A cookie-loving Santa can be found at Adele’s during their annual toy drive for the Ron Wood Resource Center. If your ‘kids’ are the four-legged kind, then head over to PetSmart or Paws to Pur-fection Dog Grooming for your holiday photos. In addition to the Santa-mania, you’ll find a downtown Carson Beer Crawl, two plays at the Brewery Arts Center, and plenty of music.

Just a few days left before the big day. Get your fill of holiday music as the Ninth Annual Christmas Carol Play-along for Strings returns to Carson Mall. Even if you don’t play an instrument, voices are more than welcome to contribute to the tunes. Wintertime is perfect for curling up with a good book, join the Library’s Winter Read-a-thon to win some great prizes. Carson Cigar Company is throwing a party featuring Ev ‘Cheese the Knife’ Musselman of the Tripping King Snakes: they’ve been selling raffle tickets to benefit Food for Thought, so head down to support this great charity.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum and the Friends of the Nevada State Railroad Museum, have added an additional Santa Train ride for children in our community who are battling cancer on Dec. 17 in Carson City.

Students finding their future careers before they have even graduated from high school has been an evolution in the making and who would have thought?

However, between Carson High School’s Senior Project graduation requirement, made possible by the generous working community of Carson City, the myriad of old and newly formed clubs offered to the students of Carson High, and on-site income earners like The Greenhouse Project, not to mention the Career and Technical Education Jump Start program offered through Western Nevada College, students are figuring out quickly that high school is not the end of their education before starting a career, it is where they may actually begin their careers.

Following weeks of preparation on the grounds of the Nevada State Capitol and around downtown Carson City, the Silver and Snowflake Festival of Lights flipped the switch on the 2016 holiday season.

Start the day making something beautiful. The Muscle Powered Trash Mob descends upon our new downtown for some clean-up and coffee. Kids will enjoy the Tales and Wags program at the Library where they get to read to therapy dogs and acquire a new book in the process. It’s a Carson/Douglas Army/Navy rivalry as the JROTC programs hit the field at Carson High for a game of flag football. Keep reading and you’re sure to find something that sounds fun.

We are pleased to announce that the always popular “P’Opera!” is bringing many reasons to gather as they present an elegant evening of Holiday Music at the highly enjoyable Napa-Sonoma South located at 7671 South Virginia Street in Reno on Sunday, Dec. 11.

A special family-oriented craft fair will be held this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 19-20, at historic Piper’s Opera House, 12 North B St., Virginia City.

The event will feature local handmade crafts, a raffle and silent auction, as well as a DJ with holiday music, and a snack bar featuring hot dogs, chips, cookies, soda, water and juice. Admission to the craft fair is free.

The holiday season comes to life with the Reno Phil’s annual celebration, Spirit of the Season, Dec. 5 and 6 at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts.

Looking for some holiday music magic today before heading home for the weekend? Inside the Carson Mall, 1227 S. Carson Street, from 4 to 5 p.m. is the six annual Christmas Carol Play-along for Strings. The event is free and open to everyone and is well worth it to see the performers.

Hello, Carson City! The holiday season is in full swing with tree lightings, craft fairs, Santa sightings all around the area. Every week, I create a list of the fun stuff and events going on around the Carson City area for my Facebook page, I love Carson City. I follow the pages of local businesses and organizations, search website calendars, keep my ear to the ground, and compile a list of anything and everything going on in this community.

Black Friday may be reserved for football games, leftovers and after Thanksgiving holiday shopping but in downtown Carson City, blades, hot chocolate and holiday music were the orders of the day for teens and families at the opening day of Arlington Square Skating Rink in Carson City.
