Crime Log: vandalism turns into attempt to obtain medication

A Carson City Sheriff's deputy arrested Cameron Matthew Haffey, 20, a stocker from Carson City, just before 3 a.m. Wednesday at the 1800 block of North Carson Street. Around 11 p.m. Tuesday officers were dispatched to a north Carson pharmacy on a report of a broken window. Camera footage showed a suspect in dark pants and a dark coat. Later on the same deputy was passing the pharmacy and spotted a suspect that matched that description.

Carson City Road Report for Dec. 26 to Jan. 1

Due to a project to complete a new north-south water transmission line on the east side of Carson City, there will be shoulder work on S. Lompa Lane between Edmonds Drive and Grandville Drive. There will also be shoulder work on Edmonds Drive between Fairview Drive and Gentry Lane. Minimal delays are expected.

There will be work at North Carson Street, in the vicinity of the freeway overpass as a result of the Freeway Landscaping Project. No closures are expected.

Free books trailer at State and Hwy 50 Tuesday morning

A trailer full of books being given away for free to members of the general public. The books belonged to the recently-deceased owner of a local bookstore. Her brother, who said this was his tenth such load of books, has made her collection a gift to the community.

Six weeks after tickets went on sale, The Polar Express™ has officially sold out, according to the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau.
More than 7,500 riders will board the magical holiday train on the Virginia and Truckee Railroad, the only officially licensed Polar Express event in the region this holiday season.

Carson City working out bugs in new traffic signal system

If you have recently noticed that some of the traffic signals in town don't seem to be giving you enough time to get through them, help is on the way.

The city implemented a new coordinated traffic signal system two weeks ago, and have been making adjustments to it since then to work out the bugs, according to Transportation Manager Patrick Pittenger.

Pittenger said they have had many complaints from citizens during that time about problems with traffic signal timing, especially being able to cross main thoroughfares from side streets.

Weekend Crime Report: Carson City man arrested for assault with deadly weapon (updated)

Shaun Nicholas Day, 29, was arrested Friday night after allegedly firing a .357 revolver at another man in the 900 block of South Carson Street.

According to the arrest report, the victim said Day was a passenger in a car driven by Chandy Atkins, when the car pulled up alongside, and he and Day exchanged words. The victim then said Day pointed a gun at him and fired once, missing him.

The following persons were arrested this weekend by Carson City Sheriff's deputies:

Enrique Lopez Aguilar, 23, was arrested Saturday morning near the intersection of Daggett and Canyon Drive for felony statutory sexual seduction. According to the arrest report, the parents of a 14-year-old girl reported that the subject had come to their residence to drop off their daughter, and they blocked his vehicle so he couldn't leave. A deputy talked to the subject, who allegedly admitted to having sex with the girl, but said she told him she was 18 years old. His bail was set at $15,000.

Fatal motorcycle crash on US Highway 50 near Carson City

A 25-year-old Minden man died Saturday in a motorcycle crash on U.S. Highway 50 east of the Douglas County line on Spooner, seven miles west of Highway 395 in Carson City, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.

According to NHP Trooper Chuck Allen, Edwin Bruno-Mazariego was riding his green 2008 Kawasaki ZX600P motorcycle east bound on the four-lane highway. For reasons still unknown, he failed to negotiate a left hand curve and departed the travel lane striking the adjacent section of guardrail.

Fire crews mopping up small brush fire on east side of Carson City

Fire crews are finishing up work on a small brush fire that broke out on the east side of Carson City, south of Highway 50 East.

A Nevada Division of Forestry helicopter was seen dropping several loads of water on the area after personnel from Carson City Fire Department and the Bureau of Land Management contained the fire on the ground. There were no structures visible near the fire.

When it first started, a big column of smoke was visible throughout the city, and reports at the time said it is more than one acre and spreading toward Rifle Range Road.

An motor home fire has shut down the Carson City bypass and the Highway 50 east entrance to the freeway this evening. According to witnesses on the scene and police scanner traffic, the motor home, parked on the freeway between Fairview and 5th Street near the bridge, went up in flames at around 5:33 this afternoon. It was extinguished at around 5:50 p.m.

Man arrested after allegedly trying to hit woman with car

A Carson City man was jailed Sunday morning after allegedly trying to hit a woman with his car, and then eluding officers near Russell Way and Northridge.

According to the arrest report, Anthony Todd Martin, 30, was also found in possession of burglary tools, equipment used for syphoning gasoline, drug paraphernalia, a prescription drug that didn't belong to the suspect, and a cache of jewelry that matched the description of items listed as stolen in a string of recent burglaries in the area.

Crime report for May 19

The following people were arrested by Carson City Sheriff's deputies May 19:

—Sarah Elizabeth Crockett, 21, of Carson City, was arrested in the 3800 block of South Carson Street for felony grand larceny and gross misdemeanor possession of drugs without a prescription. The suspect had been detained by store security after allegedly emerging from a dressing room without the items she entered with. She was also allegedly found to be in possession of a bottle of pills including morphine for which she did not have a prescription. Bail was set at $5,000.

Carson City archery group raises $1,000 for cancer research

The Clear Creek Bowmen, an archery organization in Carson City, held its fundraising archery shoot on Sunday, May 8 and took in about $1,000 in entry fees to fight cancer. Click to the PDF below for a complete list of winners.

Officials report that there were 67 shooters that participated in the fundraiser. The donation will be made to the Carson Advocates for Cancer Care.

Carson City area road report for May 16-22

The following activities along Carson City roadways will take place due to utility work:

  • On Monday, May 16 through Wednesday, May 18, work is scheduled on Curry Street near the intersection with King Street. There will be single lane traffic with flagger control.
  • On Thursday, May 19, there will be single lane traffic with flagger control on Research Way south of College Parkway.

Man who drew knife and gun at Carson City bar, arrested in Lyon County after chase

A man who had reportedly flashed a gun and a knife at patrons inside a Carson City bar led authorities on a chase early this morning into Lyon County. It ended with the suspect being tasered and detained at about 1:45 a.m.

Road Report as of May 6, 2011. The following information applies to the period of May 9-15:

There will be temporary lane closures due to utility work on Fairview Drive between Highway 50 East and Butti Way and on North Edmonds Drive (old Edmonds) between Highway 50 East and the intersection with Fairview Drive.

Sidewalk improvements will occur on Long Street between Molly Drive and Saliman Road. No lane closures are expected, however JAC bus stops in this area may be temporarily closed.

Carson City father and daughter die in Highway 50 accident

An 8-year-old girl died overnight after an accident on Highway 50 east of Carson City in Mound House on Friday afternoon, which also claimed the life of her father, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports today.

The girl's identity has not been released. Her father, David James Melendrez, 30, of Carson City died at the scene of the accident. The condition of a young boy, 3, also inside the car with his sister, and his father Melendrez, is not known at this time, said Trooper Dan Lopez.
