Streets and sidewalks around Carson City will be busier starting Monday morning as children throughout the district head back to school.

A new initiative by the University of Nevada, Reno to foster creative, interdisciplinary research aimed at answering critical questions related to water resource management and sustainability was approved by the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval on Friday officially announced the launch of the Office of Workforce Innovation, a program using federal funds to create career pathways in the fields of information technology, advanced manufacturing, education, and healthcare.

Western Nevada College is embarking on a new partnership to help area high school students begin their college careers early, and save money along the way.

High School juniors and seniors living in Carson City, Douglas, Lyon, Storey and Washoe counties can earn college credits at no cost through Nevada State High School, while they finish high school. They may also receive support with textbooks, transportation, and class expenses.

Jake Doll wasn’t sure what he was getting himself into when his guidance counselor at Dayton High School told him about the Career and Technical Education Jump Start Program in Advanced Manufacturing through Western Nevada College.

The $10,000 four-year Dave Cook Memorial Scholarship has been established by the Elaine P. Wynn and Family Foundation in partnership with the Nevada Public Education Foundation for an incoming freshman pursuing an Education degree at a Nevada System of Higher Education institution beginning in fall 2016.

The general rule is if you take a distribution from your traditional IRA before you have attained age 59-1/2, there is a penalty of 10 percent of the amount of the distribution. That is in addition to the income tax on it.
However, there are a few exceptions that avoid the penalty.

Four autonomous unmanned aircraft flew simultaneously on pre-determined flight paths at the Reno-Stead Airport using software developed at the University of Nevada, Reno, in collaboration with the NASA Ames Research Center, in a milestone event that included 24 unmanned aircraft at six sites across the country on April 19.

Pursuing an education in nursing has taken Diana Meza Cabrera on a lengthy road of challenges, experiences and rewards.

Since graduating from high school in 2006, Meza Cabrera consistently found ways to help others. As an outreach educator for the Live Violence Free program in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., she has assisted domestic violence, child abuse and sexual abuse victims. She also been a student assistant at the Humboldt State University Health Center, and has participated in blood and toothbrush drives while attending WNC.

More than 30 volunteers and University of Nevada, Reno staff and students spent a sunny, yet windy, winter day last week building six hoop houses that will be used to grow vegetables year-round to benefit Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada food programs.

Carson High School Career and Technical Education agriculture program lead teacher, Charlie Mann, donned his dress, braided his beard and welcomed his Agriculture 1 students to the Hunger Games.

The Carson City students have been studying world hunger, commodities, production and trade throughout the semester, and the Hunger Games simulation gave them an opportunity to examine trade and barter with their peers while relating to popular culture.

Much of Carson High Schools’ success flows from the voluntary assistance of individuals and businesses selflessly giving of their time, their effort, and their resources to the advancement of Carson City’s youth and local community.

In our last column, we specified the duty of elected public officials: a fiduciary duty to voters, taxpayers and the broad public interest. Not, as some people claim, to government institutions such as the system of higher education, the military or some social service agency.

What’s the duty of an elected public official?

Three years ago, when Ron served on the board of regents, Nevada’s elected body that governs public higher education, that board held a big discussion on system governance at one of its meetings. It was “facilitated” by a woman with a long background in higher education administration, including having been a college president.

The University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Business received recognition this week from U.S. News & World Report as offering a top online graduate program in the country.

The College of Business’ Online Executive MBA, offered in partnership with Extended Studies, was ranked No. 31 of 163 schools in the “Best Online MBA Programs” category.

Last year, Nevadans voted almost 4-to-1 against taxing businesses based on their gross receipts. Amidst an anemic economic recovery, most Nevadans understood that taxing them on their top line, with no regard for their costs or profitability, was a terrible idea.

But then the 2015 legislature, at Gov. Sandoval's last-minute behest and without reasonable opportunity for anyone to examine what he proposed, passed such a tax anyway.

Many believe that government is increasingly responding to the agenda of special interests and not acting for the common good. I am holding steadfast that our local government needs to be: of the people, by the people, and for the people.

California Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation that will make attending Lake Tahoe Community College more affordable for residents in neighboring Nevada communities.

Nevada System of Higher Education Chancellor Dan Klaich is a really, really good guy.
