Partnership Carson City presentation warns of dangers and trends of drug use

Pipes disguised as highlighter pens and lipstick cases. Aerosol cans and water bottles that are secret containers for stashing drugs.

Hannah McDonald, youth program coordinator and training specialist for Partnership Carson City, laid out some of the ways youth are hiding their drug use. She unveiled the methods in a presentation Monday for counselors at Carson High School.

Please join Theresa Simmons, Wednesday Evenings at 5:30 pm, at the Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness Center for an easy flow Yoga class. This is a beginners class with some challenges which offers: simple postures and movements to strengthen, gentle stretching with stability, balance poses incorporated into a sequence of standing postures, core strengthening, and alignment to ease the body of complaints, with the use of props and the assistance of the instructor to align. This class invites new Yoga Students and those who have done yoga for a while who would like to learn to practice yoga with stability.

Local cancer patients share journey through art

Carson Tahoe Cancer Center, an affiliate of Huntsman Cancer Institute, University of Utah, is hosting an art show through Friday, Dec. 18. This touching collection of over 25 pieces, created by patients, survivors, caregivers and loved ones, represents an inspiring journey of hope through paintings, mixed-media, music, photography, and quilt-work.

It's Your City: Carson City School District partners with Nevada Health Centers to open clinic

This week on It's Your City host Cortney Bloomer welcomes Valerie Dockery of the Carson City School District to discuss the recent partnership with Nevada Health Centers and its new health clinic that opened in conjunction with the school district.

Nevada Health Centers, Carson City School District open new school-based health facility

The Carson City School District and Nevada Health Centers announced that it will open a new school-based health center on Musser Street behind the Professional Development Center, formerly Gleason Elementary School.

To facilitate the opening, there were be a ribbon cutting celebration Thursday with the Carson City Chamber of Commerce and officials from the Carson City School District and Nevada Health Centers Tours and refreshments will be provided. The event begins at 8:30 a.m. This center is located at 618 W. Musser Street.

UNR's Peavine Hall is newest residential facility for students on campus

Peavine Hall, predicted to be the University’s first LEED Gold certified building, opened for a public viewing during its grand-opening ceremony Thursday and will open to students for fall 2015 semester Aug. 20.

Foundation to raise money for Carson City schools

A foundation to help raise money for the Carson City School District will be launched next week during a reception at Carson High School.

“Our only mission is to support the kids in the community,” said Ian Hill, chairman of the foundation’s board. “For the first time, we’re going to be joining together all the people who care deeply about the Carson City School District.”

Carson Tahoe Health is the first hospital in Nevada to offer the new Lutonix® 035 Drug Coated Balloon PTA Catheter (DCB), which is the first and only DCB approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This new therapy dramatically improves the long-term durability of angioplasty procedures and decreases the need for repeat procedures for those suffering from Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD).

2015 Amgen Tour of California to host first two pro women's cycling stages at South Lake Tahoe

To observe the 10th anniversary edition of the Amgen Tour of California, organizers of the race announced Monday that the first two stages of the expanded women’s portion of the race would be hosted by Tahoe South, “America’s Best Lake,” (USA Today, Aug. 2012) May 8-9, 2015. The competition will continue in Sacramento, May 10, 2015, with a third racing stage, the same day as the overall men’s start of the Amgen Tour of California.

The Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada and the Washoe Tribe Head Start Office in Carson City are among the sponsoring agencies of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Child and Adult Care Food Program, Nevada Department of Agriculture announced Friday.

Prestige and Carson Tahoe Health to provide senior care services to Carson City region

Prestige Care and Prestige Senior Living, leaders in skilled nursing and rehabilitation care, announced plans Tuesday to join with Carson Tahoe Health to expand senior care services and offer comprehensive memory care to Carson City residents and their families.

As a first step in the relationship, the organizations will develop a community with 40 units for memory care services on the Carson Tahoe Specialty Medical Center campus. Construction will begin in 2014.

Nevada Gov. Sandoval creates mental health council following bus ticket investigation

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval signed an executive order on Friday establishing the Governor’s Behavioral Health and Wellness Council.

The Council will examine ways of improving and strengthening the systems of support and delivery of services to those living with behavioral health conditions in Nevada, officials said Monday. An analysis of Nevada’s mental health system, which began in May, will also be evaluated by the council.
