Douglas authorities make arrest in residential burglaries

Investigators of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office have identified three suspects believed involved in two recent residential burglaries that occurred on Wildrose Dr, in Minden between Sunday, August 19 and Thursday, August 23.

Through extensive follow-up investigation, DCSO detectives were able to tie the suspects to possession of property that was stolen in the residential burglaries. Much of the property, estimated to have a value of approximately $40,000, has been recovered.

Carson City authorities make felony warrant and drug arrests

A Gardnerville man in custody in Douglas County was transferred to Carson City Jail and faces warrant larceny and burglary charges.
Brookes Dickson, 23, is being held in the Carson City Jail. The warrants include felony burglar and misdemeanor larceny. Bail amount was set at $20,000.

Other arrests:
— Justin Snyder, 35, a transient, was booked into Carson City Jail. He is being held on a felony parole and probation violation.

Crime Log: Two Carson City men arrested on fugitive from justice warrants

Carson City Sheriff's deputies have arrested the following individuals based on felony or gross misdemeanor allegations:

  • Michael James Bundren, 26, a Carson City resident, at 1:15 p.m. Sunday. Bundren was arrested for a fugitive from justice warrant in his name. Bail has been set at $25,000.
  • Julian Quincy Lewis, 19, a Carson City resident, at 8:30 p.m. Friday. Lewis was arrested for a fugitive from justice warrant in his name. No bail has been set.

Fernley 95A Speedway Race Results for August 18, 2012

It was a night of yellow flags, red flags, restarts, darkness, and fantastic racing at Fernley 95A Speedway on Saturday, August 18. Eighty-five entries in six racing divisions were on hand, plus eight Outlaw Karts.

Highway 395 closed south of Gardnerville due to flooding

U.S. 395 has been closed six miles south of Gardnerville after a thunderstorm washed parts of a hillside into the roadway. Nevada Highway Patrol said no injuries were reported, but that one vehicle ruptured an oil pan after hitting a large rock.

Update from NHP:

As of 4:20 pm, northbound traffic will be held at the Holbrook Junction (US395/SR208) and southbound traffic is being held or turned around on the south side of Gardnerville. Trooper Dan Lopez is reporting that it’s beginning to rain again in that area so a definitive time on the re-opening of the highway is questionable.

The newspaper headline on page one on Aug. 15, 2002 said it all:
“They made it!”
Yes, they did! And, they did it in record-setting style.
Four athletes, who are personal friends of Elaine and I, completed 10 very physically and mentally-demanding challenges in a period of 10 grueling days, way back in 2002.
I know because we were there for each and every one of those 10 memorable days that resulted in the very first Nevada 10-in-10 Challenge going into the Nevada record book.
Those four were Karl Horeis, Jeremy Evans, Rick Gunn and K. M. Cannon.

Crime Log: Three men arrested in Carson City for methamphetamine allegations

Carson City Sheriff's deputies have arrested the following individuals based on felony or gross misdemeanor allegations:

  • Terris Lee French III, 35, a Carson City man, at 10:30 p.m. Friday. French was arrested for robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, and violation of Parole and Probation restrictions. No bail has been set.
  • Jose Garcia-Gaona, 35, a Carson City man, at 1 p.m. Saturday. Garcia-Gaona was arrested for an unspecified felony warrant as well as trafficking of methamphetamines (588 grams). Bail is set at $252,500.

Carson City area gaming revenue for June up slightly from last year

Gaming revenue, known as "win" for Carson City area casinos, saw a slight increase of 1.11 percent for the month of June, the Nevada Gaming Control Board reported Thursday.
Carson City area casinos, which includes Minden and Gardnerville in Douglas County, took in in $8,229,305 in June compared to $8,136,730 during the same period last year.
Meanwhile South Shore Lake Tahoe area casinos posted a 17 percent increase for the month of June, taking in a "win" of $16,555,235 in June of this year compared to $14,128,801 during the same period in 2011.

Douglas County authorities make arrests in Indian Hills vehicle burglary case

A Gardnervile man has been arrested and faces charges in connection with several vehicle burglaries last month in the Indian Hills area in north Douglas County. A 15-year-old male was also arrested.
Nathan Centeno, 18, was arrested on Thursday by Douglas County Sheriff's Office investigators. The arrest was made after an investigation following several vehicle burglaries that happened on July 10.

Fernley 95A Speedway Race Results for July 21, 2012

The weather was hot, and so was the racing action at Fernley 95A Speedway last Saturday night. The Hobby Stock division led off, with Tom Haxall of Verdi taking the lead from pole and building a margin over Sun Valley’s Rick Miller and Jake Baker of Reno. Carl Barlow of Silver Springs, who won from the back of the field two weeks ago, wasted no time charging through the field to second place. Newcomer Haxall didn’t realize that the track rules call for racing back to the yellow, so when the first caution came out for two cars spinning in turn two, he lost the lead to Barlow.

Carson City Sheriff's deputies have arrested the following individuals based on gross misdemeanor or felony allegations:

  • An unidentified man (John Doe) was arrested at 2 a.m. Saturday morning near the Blue Bull for gross misdemeanor allegations of battery on an officer and misdemeanor allegations of obstruction. Another man was arrested at the same time for obstruction. Bail is set at $3,000 plus administrative fees.

Welcome to the rainy season

Not really, but it is nice to get some mid-summer rain. I'm sure the firefighters working on the Springs Fire east of Gardnerville are happy for the showers. And the rain did a nice job of taking the smoke out of the air. Carsonweather.com reports that we have had .09 inches of rain so far today. What a way to start a week.

Lightning sparks fires in Douglas County

UPDATE 6:55PM: Afternoon thunderstorms produced lightning that started brush fires in the Pine Nuts east of Gardnerville in Douglas County on Sunday, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center. No immediate structures were said to be threatened. The fires have burned about 1,000 acres at last report, which was 6:30 p.m.

Carson City goes full-board live music with Jazz and Beyond Music Festival in August

The summer sizzles as the Mile High Jazz Band Association, Carson City, local businesses and jazz lovers proudly present the 2012 "Jazz & Beyond" Carson City Music Festival, an annual event that began in August 2004. Performances at multiple venues in Carson City will feature more than 100 musicians in over 50 bands, Aug. 3-19 and are mainly free. Music styles include Dixieland jazz, big band, bluegrass, Latin, blues and folk.

Crime Log: Carson City man arrested after alleged bar fight

Carson City Sheriff's deputies have arrested Joshua Cook, 26, a Carson City resident, at 6:30 a.m. Saturday. Cook was arrested for felony allegations of battery with substantial bodily harm after an alleged bar fight Friday night/Saturday morning, as well as misdemeanor allegations of obstructing justice. The victim was taken to Renown medical center in Reno after he was discovered by officers on a rooftop with major swelling on his face and eyes and bleeding from several places. Bail is set at $15,000.

Carson City area casino 'win' for May down nearly 10 percent

Carson Valley area casinos reported a drop in monthly gaming "win" for May, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board on Thursday. Casinos in Carson City, Gardnerville, Minden and others in Douglas County except Lake Tahoe report a 9.98 percent decrease compared to May 2011. Casinos in May took in $8,248, 755. In May 2011 the "win" was $9,162,840.

Fernley 95A Speedway Race Results for July 7, 2012

Saturday night’s racing program at Fernley 95A Speedway started off with every car present on track for a tribute to fallen racer Tommy Teters, who passed away recently. Teters’ sprint car took one last lap and the checkered flag.

Carson City Sheriff's deputies arrested the following individuals for felony or gross misdemeanor allegations over the weekend:

  • David William Koapke, 32, a Minot, S.D. man, for possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamines). Koapke was also arrested for the misdemeanor allegation of petit larceny. Bail is set at $2,750 plus administrative fees.

Crime Log: Carson City man arrested for methamphetamines

Carson City Sheriff's deputies arrested Anthony John Chappa, 24, a Carson City resident, just prior to 11 p.m. Wednesday. Chappa was arrested for felony allegations of possession of methamphetamines and possession of methamphetamines with the intent to sell, as well as the misdemeanor allegations of driving without proof of insurance, driving with fictitious registration, driving without headlights, and speeding from 1 to 10 over.

It’s now official: Systems Consultants, the private computer firm in Fallon that conducts the annual computerized drawings for Nevada’s big game hunting tags, has posted the results of the 2012 drawings at Internet website www.huntnevada.com for the whole world to see.
There were a whole bunch of winners and a heck of a lot more losers in this year’s drawings for tags for Pronghorn Antelope, Mule Deer, Rocky Mt. Elk, California Bighorn Sheep, Desert Bighorn Sheep, Rocky Mt. Bighorn Sheep and Rocky Mt. Goat.

TRE Fire fully contained at 7,152 acres

Cooler, wet weather helped firefighters yesterday achieve full containment of the Topaz Ranch Estates Fire 15 miles south of Gardnerville, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center.

The fire consumed 7,152 acres, two homes and 17 outbuildings. The local Carson City BLM District office took over command of the firefighting this morning. Ten firefighters remain on the scene, down from a peak of over 500.
