Partners to plant trees near Indian Creek Campground
Submitted by editor on Thu, 02/26/2015 - 10:22amThe Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carson City District, American Forests, Nevada Conservation Corps, and Alpine County are partnering to rehabilitate the Airport Fire area by planting trees starting Tue., March 10 and concluding on Sun., March 15, 2015.
This fire burned 81 acres of BLM and Alpine County land during the 2011 fire season and is located near the Indian Creek Recreation Area and the Alpine County Airport along Airport Road.
Boy Scout group of the Comstock has members from Dayton, Virginia City
Submitted by editor on Wed, 02/25/2015 - 4:42pmBoy Scout Troop 847 continues to serve the young men of the Comstock. Meeting weekly at the Mark Twain Community Center, 500 Sam Clemens Avenue in Dayton, the Troop currently has 14 registered Scouts from Dayton and Virginia City.
The Troop’s program and operations are youth-run under the leadership of Senior Patrol Leader Star Scout Joshua Baughman and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader Star Scout Matthew McGifford. Under the mentorship of Scoutmaster Bill Boston and three Assistant Scoutmasters, these Scouts strive to provide a quality program of Scout activities.

Forest Service names Jeff Marsolais as Supervisor for Lake Tahoe Basin unit
Submitted by editor on Tue, 02/17/2015 - 2:46pmJeff Marsolais has been picked to lead the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit of the U.S. Forest Service, Region 5 officials announced Tuesday. Marsolais has served three years as the deputy forest supervisor for the Lake Tahoe unit. He replaces Nancy Gibson, who retired at the first of the year.
During that time Marsolais served as manager of projects and initiatives involving ski areas and recreation facilities.
Heavenly's Epic Discovery Project closer to reality; Final environmental report ready

The new project, located at Heavenly Mountain Resort, will expand their summer activities to include more canopy tours, hiking and biking trails as well as interpretive activities.

Tahoe area snowmobilers urged to avoid areas with minimal snow
Submitted by editor on Thu, 02/05/2015 - 2:46pmWith snowpack in the Lake Tahoe Basin at low levels, the U.S. Forest Service is asking snowmobilers to shift their activities to locations with adequate snow coverage, within permitted snowmobile areas. Snowmobile operators should avoid bare dirt and patchy snow and should not ride across streams or over small trees or brush. Operating snowmobiles on too little snow creates ruts in the soil and crushes vegetation.

Submitted by editor on Sat, 01/31/2015 - 10:34amAn annual ice fishing derby will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7 at Davis Lake, Calif., with an entry fee of $20 per person. The only uncertainty is whether it will be an ice fishing or a water fishing derby.
It is normally an ice fishing derby at this time of the year, but last year and again this year, it is shaping up to be a water fishing derby due to lack of ice on the lake.

Forest Service at Lake Tahoe to host job fair
Submitted by editor on Fri, 01/16/2015 - 3:52pmA job fair hosted by the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will be held Jan. 27, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Forest Supervisor’s Office at 35 College Drive, South Lake Tahoe, Calif.
Supervisors of temporary positions will be available to speak with interested applicants and answer questions about this year’s summer jobs, as well as the Pathways student intern program. Positions are available in fire, fisheries, wildlife, botany, visitor services, roads and trails, recreation and wilderness, and vegetation and timber management.
Ski with a Forest Service ranger tradition begins Friday at Heavenly
Submitted by editor on Thu, 01/15/2015 - 12:44pmBeginning this Friday and continuing through April, the public is invited to spend a day at Lake Tahoe skiing with a U.S. Forest Service ranger at Heavenly Mountain Resort.
Tours begin at the top of the gondola at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. every Monday and Friday through winter. Spanish Ski with a Ranger returns Friday, Feb. 20, with tours offered every Friday at 10:30 a.m. Both programs last about an hour and continue through April 10, 2015, weather permitting.

Prescribed fire operations continue at Lake Tahoe into 2015

Operations will last through the next several weeks as conditions allow.

Spring Creek seeding project aims to jumpstart crucial habitat
Submitted by editor on Mon, 12/22/2014 - 1:41pmOn a cold and windy morning in November, 45 men and women took to the hills in the Bodie Hills to plant as many sagebrush seedlings as they could in a two-day span. Besides the cold, the work itself was physically demanding as each seedling had to be planted by hand. What makes this story even more interesting is the fact that many of the people on those hills volunteered to be there.
Column: Bi-State Compact Approved 45 Years Ago This December
Submitted by editor on Thu, 12/18/2014 - 4:57pmForty-five years ago, in December 1969, President Richard Nixon signed a unique Bi-State Compact approving California and Nevada’s plan to create the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency. It was the first such undertaking of its kind, uniting two states, six local jurisdictions, and the federal government in a shared mission to protect Lake Tahoe’s sensitive environment from overdevelopment.
That effort has shaped the Tahoe we know and love today, and will help shape the Tahoe that we bequeath to future generations.
